Over 170,000 students a year participate in math competitions, many participants practice like athletes practice for their sport. This article provides a large number of resources for competitors to get into top form for any math competition. The links offer resources for increasing problem-solving skills, practice with specific events, and strategies for competing.
In the Classroom
If you or your students participate in math competitions, this site is worth bookmarking for the many included resources. Even if you don't compete, use links included on the site to help build problem-solving and critical thinking skills with all students or to find math competitions. What's Watson? It is IBM's Artificial Intelligence (AI) Platform. Use Teacher Advisor With Watson to find standards-based vetted math resources and lessons for grades K-5. Use your email to sign up and start exploring the site. Search by grade level, standards, or browse strategies and resources recommended based on your grade level and content information. Search results also provide links to related lessons and teaching strategies.
In the Classroom
Bookmark this site as a resource for finding instructional content when teaching elementary math. Then find additional standards-based assessments, or create your own, using a tool like Edulastic, reviewed here. Edulastic includes a database of over 20,000 standards-based math questions. Have students use a voice recording tool like Vocaroo, reviewed here, to share problem-solving solutions with fellow students. As a culminating activity to your math unit, have students create a book including images of their work using Write Reader, reviewed here. Write Reader is perfect for use with young students and includes an option to share their writing along with corrected spelling underneath.

Cha-Ching is a financial literacy program developed for use with students in grades K-6. Animated videos provide lessons on saving and earning money, entrepreneurship, and charity. Each lesson includes classroom activity guides and several also include family activity guides. Educator guides provide complete details for teaching with the videos and correlation to financial literacy and social studies standards.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of these free lessons and videos to teach financial literacy in your classroom. Collect student ideas on how to save and earn money onto an online bulletin board like lino, reviewed here. lino offers the ability to include images, videos, and comments. Have students take pictures of different ways financial situations were faced over the course of a month then create a collage for your class using an image editor like Photo Joiner Collage Maker, reviewed here. Extend learning by challenging students to use their imagination to create a financial adventure game using Scratch, reviewed here. Scratch is an easy to use program that brings adventures to life through interactive stories, animations, and games.

Access the Illustrated Mathematics Grades 6-8 curriculum for free through the Open Up Resources site. Register on the site to view and gain access to course materials. Select the grade level and choose teacher, parent, or student materials. Content is divided into units and lessons and includes all materials except assessments. Provide additional information related to your school affiliation to gain access to assessments. Additional options include downloading resources as a print file or import into a Microsoft OneNote Class Notebook.
In the Classroom
Include this site to supplement your current grade 6-8 math curriculum. Use the resources to differentiate instruction for gifted students in lower grades or as remediation for struggling students in older grades. Be sure to take advantage of the family materials providing explanations of math content and strategies for problem-solving. Use the student materials for differentiating instruction or as homework. Have students share their math explanations and strategies with video explanations using a tool like Flip, reviewed here. Flip provides a tool for video responses to a question along with comments from peers. Take student learning a step further and ask them to create and share their own math problems along with suggestions for learning. Use a tool like Sway, reviewed here. Sway is a presentation tool that offers multimedia options including text, video, and images.

Students explore the possibilities, then make their decision with an explanation through mathematical reasoning. This blog frequently updates with new dilemmas. Find questions by specific categories by choosing from tags on the right-hand side of the home page.
In the Classroom
Share problems on your interactive whiteboard or with a projector for use as class starters, or provide a link on your class website for homework. Use the sample sheet provided on this site as an example to create your own student response template using Google Forms, reviewed here. After collecting responses, create a 2-column Padlet, reviewed here, and ask students to share their solution in the appropriate column. Padlet allows users to add comments; turn this feature on and ask students to respond to the solutions provided by their peers. Have students use Flip, reviewed here, to create their own Would You Rather...? question and collect video responses from peers.

Illuminations offers this comprehensive library of interactives specifically for teaching the PreK through 2nd Grade Numbers and Operations strand. Scroll through to choose from interactives like Coin Box, Concentration, Five and Ten Frames, an electronic Abacus (requires Java), and several others. You'll also find Dynamic Paper (create math manipulatives, such as pentagonal pyramid, a set of pattern blocks, a number line, and so on; all these in the size and shape you need). All interactives include complete instructions, an exploration, and correlation to standards.

Keep this site in your professional favorites to find supporting technology and activities for teaching numbers and operations. As you find practice or extension ideas for student use or at home reinforcement, share specific links on your class web page or classroom computer center for students to access independently or as you assign them for needed practice. MathScienceMusic provides a large variety of free, engaging, resources to teach math, science, and music to students from kindergarten through college all created through a collaboration with Jazz legend, Herbie Hancock. Click letters on the homepage to begin your musical experience, then scroll down to view the available resources. Each group of resources includes a video introduction explaining the content. Some of the choices include Scratch Jazz (music and coding) and Groove Pizza (Shapes and Angles and Groove). All activities include a short description along with suggestions for appropriate grade level, concepts taught, and links to additional resources. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Share activities from MathScienceMusic on your interactive whiteboard with students, then let them explore independently. Scratch Jazz is perfect for teaching basic coding; students interested in music will enjoy creating their own jazz-themed project using the site's tutorial. Add interest to math lessons by taking advantage of the free lesson plans. Be sure to check out the link to Math and Music Standards found on the music and math curriculum page. Have students modify their learning by creating videos of their music creations using moovly, reviewed here and share them on a site such as TeacherTube, reviewed here. Be sure to have them discuss their journey from the beginning through the final creation of their project. Team up with your school's music teacher to collaborate on the many activities provided on this site.

Other options allow you to choose by grade level standards. Registration isn't necessary to play individual games; however, enrollment as a teacher provides additional features. Input your class to receive detailed progress reports as well as leaderboards and student competitions.
In the Classroom
MathGames is perfect for practice with many different math concepts. Include a link to games on your class website or classroom computers. Be sure to share games with parents for play at home. Take advantage of the free registration to register your class to follow student progress and challenge students to increase scores. Enhance learning goals by asking students to write blog entries sharing their learning and understanding for each game using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. This blog creator requires no registration. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, challenge your students to create a blog using edublogs, reviewed here. Take this a step further and extend students' learning by picking the game they learned the most from and make a feature video about it using Typito, reviewed here. If you teach using Common Core Standards, MathGames is excellent for finding practice activities aligned to the standards.
