In the Classroom

This site is perfect for use on your interactive whiteboard. Explore atoms together as you experiment with dragging and dropping different parts of atoms onto the interactive. Have students explore this site on their own by sharing a link on classroom computers. Include this site as part of your introduction to elements and the periodic table.

Bozeman Science offers hundreds of science videos with topics ranging from Anatomy & Physiology through Statistics & Graphing. The site also includes videos aligned to AP curriculum and Next Generation Science Standards. Each video includes easy to understand definitions along with examples of concepts; most videos run 10 minutes or less. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable. You could always view the videos at home and bring them to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as Freemake Video Converter, reviewed here, to download the videos from YouTube.

In the Classroom

Be sure to take advantage of this extensive collection of videos in any upper-level science classroom. Be sure to include this site on your class webpage for students to access both in and outside of class for further practice. Embed a video onto your website to use for flipped lessons - have students watch the video before coming to class to participate in additional learning activities. View the Educational video portion of the site to find teaching ideas for your classroom. Use this site as a model, then ask students to create video explanations using a tool such as Stupeflix, reviewed here, and share them on a site such as TeacherTube reviewed here.

Never look at molecules or reactions the same again! Find great videos of reactions slowed down in order to see what is happening. Look at a variety of reactions including precipitation, color change, crystallization, smoke, bubbling, metal displacement, and more. View molecules including DNA nanostructures, amorphous substances, and crystals including nanocrystals and quasicrystals.

In the Classroom

In Chemistry, students can write what the molecules are doing during the video to connect the content with what they see. Give different equations and predict what would be different in that video such as the color of the precipitated substance, and so on. In younger grades, show the beauty of molecules and elements interacting and forming new substances, tapping into the marvel of the physical world. These videos are beautiful, and will appeal to visual learners.

The Molecular Workbench is a free downloadable software resource for designing and conducting computational science experiments. Download the software and create your own activities or explore and use the many existing materials. The software covers a range of topics from gas laws through quantum phenomena. Explore the Showcase to find already-created simulations including directions for use and exploration. Be sure to allow Java to run on your computer when prompted.

In the Classroom

The Molecular Workbench is perfect for use on interactive whiteboards or projectors. Share simulations with students and explore options within each simulation to view changes. Create a link to simulations on your class website and allow students to explore at home. Ask students to write a blog post for each simulation completed at home. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Loose Leaves, reviewed here. This blog creator requires no registration. Challenge students to download the software and create their own explorations. Have them use a screencast tool such as Awesome ScreenShot, reviewed here, to show evidence of their work and share with others. Use Molecular Workbench as an excellent option for challenging gifted students or for use when creating science fair experiments.

This one-stop source is a curation of images and videos to engage students in science. Registration is required to access the collection. Created by a teacher, TackTile is an easy, efficient way of finding great science starters from around the Internet. Choose from science subjects: Chemistry, Biology, Geology/Earth Science, Astronomy, Engineering, and Physics. Choose a topic within the subject area (such as Volcanoes and Igneous Rocks in Geology). Each topic is divided into subtopics. View the tiles in each subtopic. Tiles are captioned with information that relates to the subtopic. Below the tiles are Activity and Demonstration Ideas to use with each subtopic. Click on any tile to view in a pop-up window. View the images directly or download easily from TackTile. Copyright information is included with the images. Videos can be played directly within the pop-up window or click to view on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, they may not be viewable. You could always view the videos at home and bring them to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as KeepVid, reviewed here, to download the videos from YouTube.

In the Classroom

This tool has great ideas and ready to use images and videos from around the Internet. Use as a starter activity to engage students and "hook" them into the lesson. Use the images or videos to discover misconceptions, find prior knowledge before beginning the lesson, or just to interest students in the topic. Show the image or video on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Be sure to share this site (with a log in) on your class website for students to use when preparing individual or group presentations. Use resources in these tiles to engage students in creative writing about science or to explain the concepts learned at the end of the unit.

Explore this rich collection of clever YouTube videos of songs with on-screen lyrics to learn important science concepts! Be sure to check out some pretty clever songs including The Rock Cycle, Chemical Compounds in Cells, and the DNA song. The lyrics to the song are shown below the video on each YouTube page to easily copy and paste for students to follow along. Even if your students roll their eyes at the videos/songs, the concepts (and tunes) will definitely stick in their minds! If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. You could always view them at home and bring them to class "on a stick" to share. Use a tool such as ClipGrab, reviewed here, to download the videos from YouTube.

In the Classroom

Play songs on an Interactive Whiteboard or Projector for the entire class. Embed videos on your teacher page for review by students. Use these songs as an introduction to units. After viewing a video, brainstorm to identify words students know or are not familiar with. Copy the lyrics into a document and, as you discuss the material in class, encourage students to annotate the lyrics with notes about the content. Be sure to play the video often throughout the unit to reconnect with material. Challenge your more musical students to team up with a class poet to write your own songs-- for extra credit and extra fun! They could use Soundtrap, reviewed here, for this musical endeavor.

In the Classroom

Use the information on this site to find interesting demonstrations or facts to use when planning your lessons. Use these ideas as part of an inquiry lesson that encourages the students to be investigators and ask the questions. Students can also be the demonstrators in class. Encourage them to find an interesting idea or demonstration to perform in front of the class and "teach" the other students. Alternately, students can videotape or podcast their demonstration for viewing later on your class website. For podcasts use a site such as podOmatic, reviewed here. To share videos, use a site such as SchoolTube, reviewed here.

Explore an impressive set of science and engineering animations to help explain difficult concepts. View animations and posters. Understand what the visual is about by reading the background information. Animations and posters cannot be used off the site without purchasing, but this is an excellent resource for viewing and sharing in its online version. Topics include different types of engines, how an eye works and vision problems, convection, waves, and more. There are also several animations about geometric solids.

In the Classroom

Use the simulations to help explain topics and concepts in class. Language arts teachers can use this site as a source for nonfiction reading comprehension. Science and language arts teachers can use the site as a learning center for students who need enrichment. Find great animations to help visualize various topics from different viruses to diesel engines, the Doppler Effect, to the garden sundial, and the vertical sundial to name just a few. Check the readability of the animations you want students to use on their own by using the The Readability Test Tool reviewed here.

Scale of the Universe 2 zooms into the smallest parts of atoms and out to the largest items in the solar system. Use your mouse or click to view objects that vary incredibly in size. Use this tool to get a sense of the size of the universe through the relationship between familiar and unfamiliar objects. Click on the object, and an information box pops up. Click on the musical note in the upper right corner to silence the music. Spend many hours perusing the variety of information on this site.

In the Classroom

Use your projector or interactive whiteboard and spend time moving through the objects and looking at the relationships between the sizes. Be sure to instruct students on how to read powers of 10 for understanding of the sizes. This would also be a way to help students visualize the concept of scientific notation! Use the items as part of a "size scavenger hunt." Consider creating visual displays of information similar to this to show relationships between objects. Use a zooming tool such as Prezi or any other multimedia tool.

CK-12 offers a large variety of lessons and resources in STEM topics mostly geared for sixth grade and higher. Choose to access the site as a student or teacher to begin. Search by specific content or to find standards-aligned flexbook textbooks. Download flexbooks in several formats such as PDF or mobi and epub format for use on Kindle and e-readers. Create an account and add flexbooks to your list. Add your own files and resources. Specific topic searches provide links to information from flexbooks as well as available study aids, activities, and assessments.

In the Classroom

Introduce CK-12 to your students (and parents) on your interactive whiteboard and demonstrate ways to use the site at home. Be sure to create a link to the site on your class website or blog for easy access at any time. Create an account and upload your own resources and activities to create your own flexbooks for use with students. CK-12 is available in many languages. Use this site with your ESL/ELL students as a supplement to classroom resources.

QUARKED! Adventures in the Subatomic Universe has a wide range of engaging multimedia and hands-on materials to introduce the exciting world of particle physics to students ages 7 and up (and their families). This highly interactive site offers videos, games, and a club with downloads based on three themes. Themes include "How Small is Small", "Quarks: Ups, Downs, and the Universe", and "How Do You Find Out About Something You Can't See?" Topics vary from electricity to matter to shapes and much more. Lesson plans, organized by theme, can be done in any order. Some of the featured "games" include Matter Mechanics, Photon Invaders, and Height Chart. Videos even explain connections between subatomic particles and healthy eating! Many other interactives are also available.

In the Classroom

Visit the site as part of your classroom study of physics. Share videos and/or interactives from the site on your interactive whiteboard to complement existing lesson plans or plans from the site. Then allow students to explore on their own. Provide the link to this site on your desktop for students to visit during indoor recess (in elementary school). In older grades, be sure to list this helpful link on your class website for students to access both in and out of the class. In the Classroom

Use this simple illustration to find patterns among atoms at the start of a unit on atoms. Students view and brainstorm the rules of arrangement of protons, neutrons, and electrons together. Use a think, pair, share and then discuss these rules with the rest of the class to build notes on atomic theory. Find the atoms that share the same column in the periodic table to find what they have in common in terms of orbitals and electron configuration. Create flashcards with information on index cards or using any multimedia program to use to create an interactive periodic table to study from or to add periodic trends as the class continues to uncover properties of elements. Learn about simple or complex molecules and see them in 3D. Envision how molecules are put together. Choose various molecules listed along the left. The structural formula in 3D will appear in a window. Remove old structures by clicking the red "X" in their box. Change the rotating molecule by choosing the axis on which it is rotating (x, y, or z.) Remove the atoms, bonds, and colors. Read stats about the molecule. Click PNG to view a static image that can be saved.

In the Classroom

For many students, envisioning how molecules are put together is challenging. Identify how many atoms are put together, including how many bonds they form by using this as an introductory, inquiry activity. Have students use information learned here to create their own models using a drawing program such as Draw.to, reviewed here, or use more conventional material like marshmallows and gum drops that are always a hit! Identify the atoms in the molecules on this site and research the effects of these molecules in living systems.

Looking for great science animations? Find amazing interactives, key vocabulary, overviews, and even quizzes on a variety of science topics. Choose from categories such as "General Biology," "Biotechnology," "Statistics," "Chemistry," "Astronomy," and "Ecology" to name a few. View a variety of animations in each of these topics. Choose to view as a complete animation, step by step, and even with narration if desired. Be sure to link to the actual animation in your site, wiki, or blog to satisfy copyright.

In the Classroom

Share the interactives on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Have small groups view the animations together and create online multimedia presentations to share the topics they learned about with their peers using Swipe, reviewed here.

Use as an introductory activity with or without accompanying questions you create to get kids thinking. Discuss as small groups or a class what is happening throughout the animation and what they notice. Follow with lab activities or building their own models to demonstrate understanding out of simple art materials. Use this activity to reinforce complex and difficult to see concepts.

Find great videos on demand to cover a variety of physical science and chemistry topics. Use with introductory or advanced level classes covering such topics as atoms, chemical bonds, molecular architecture, and much more. Find programs in other topic and subject areas by searching through "View programs." You can purchase full video programs, but purchase is not required to view the on demand videos. Be aware: VOD clips open in a smaller pop-up, so you must allow pop-ups from this site. Videos also take some time to start streaming. So be sure to preview the clips you wish to share to be sure they work properly.

In the Classroom

Use these interesting videos as an introduction to a unit or as a review at the end. If your projector cannot zoom a small window to larger size on screen, have students view videos on laptops or lab computers. Use videos as an exploratory activity to get students thinking and to highlight information to help in understanding of lab results. Assign cooperative learning groups specific topics to "watch" and report back to the class using a multimedia presentation. Have groups create podcasts demonstrating their understanding of one of the concepts. Use a site such as podOmatic, reviewed here. Another idea: have students narrate a picture using Thinglink, reviewed here. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), upload it to Thinglink, and then narrate the photo as if it were a news report. In the Classroom

Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Students seeking information on the elements will find this to be an excellent resource. Students can be assigned various elements or be given a group of elements in order to determine the common properties of the group. Have students create an online "bulletin board" about their element using a tool such as Padlet (reviewed here).
  This resource requires Adobe Flash and PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

This is yet another terrific online periodic table. Click on an element to learn about basic information, properties, and history. View different information about the element by clicking on topics above the periodic table. For example, topics include "Chemistry," "Biology," "Bond enthalpies," "Crystal structures," and "Isotopes."

There are some advertisements on the site, and students should be cautioned not to click on these. Many of the activities at this site require Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

In the Classroom

Have groups of students view different topics through the periodic table to view the trends and offer explanations why. Teams of students can then present to the class and provide practical examples for understanding. Include this link along with other online periodic tables and ask students to decide which is the best tool to help them understand major chemical concepts.

This site, designed especially for middle school students, highlights the basic foundations of math, geology, chemistry, physics, and biology. Although this site is recommended for middle school students, it is also appropriate for high school students studying the subject areas. It is mainly a "text" site, without interactives. However, this is a great resource for explaining complex topics, researching specific topics in science and math, and much more. Each general area (i.e. geology or biology), includes several sub-topics. There are also links to activities for students, project ideas, and Teacher's Guides. There are two caveats: there are some advertisements -- nothing too distracting -- AND some of the suggested activities include "buying" a book from Amazon. You do NOT need to purchase anything to take advantage of this free resource!

In the Classroom

Use portions of this site as an anticipatory set in your science or math class. The information is simple to understand and would be useful for students struggling with a topic. Use the site for research about specific topics. Have teams of students explore each of the "sub-topics" within the main topic. Ask them to record their findings in a digital portfolio of resources using WeLearned.It, reviewed here. Challenge cooperative learning groups to create informational videos sharing their research using a tool like My Simpleshow, reviewed here. Then share them on a site such as TeacherTube, reviewed here. Why not list this link on your class website, so students can access the page both in and out of the classroom.

Use this great resource to teach any concept that requires understanding of molecules and molecular structure. Seeing molecular movements on paper is difficult. Use Molecular Workbench to help in the understanding of complex concepts. Molecular Workbench can be launched online or downloaded onto a Mac or PC computer. Click on "Software" to launch or download to begin activities. Launch the application and visualize demo models and simulations such as "Molecular Rover" to tour inside of molecules, "Cyclotron," "Wave on a String," "Nanocar," "Chemical Equilibrium," and "Electroscope." View the "Library of Models," visit the "Activity Center" to search topics in Physics, Chemistry, and Biology that relate to Motion and Energy, Charge, Atoms and Molecules, and Light.

Easy to use buttons at the top allow you to go back, reload, open, save, create a snapshot, etc. Navigation links along the top take you to What's new, Quickstart, Search, User's Manual, and more. Offline versions can be installed on a computer. Activities have a Teacher's view and a Student view which is chosen from the buttons along top. Click on "Curriculum" to view the database according to concept. Other features include "Overview and Learning Objectives," "Classroom Practice," "Central Concepts," "Textbook References," "Benchmarks and Standards," and "Extensions and Connections."

Using the program is straightforward. Directions in using and installing difficulties are included on the site. The site actually runs the software over the Internet, so you MAY be able to run it even if your computer is "locked down" from installing anything, depending on your school settings. Try it first. Teachers who must request software installation by tech staff may want to try this tool at home to convince administration of its educational value. Even using the program on one teacher computer and whiteboard is better than not having it at all!

In the Classroom

Use an activity on your screen or interactive whiteboard to introduce the concept by asking students to explain what has happened. Connect what students have learned in other class activities by reinforcing through use of the models. Most concepts in Chemistry, Physics, and Biology are difficult to understand due to the difficulty of understanding the nature of and motion of the atoms and molecules. Bring what students can't see to life in order to better understand the concepts.
