How do we get kids to write and how do we show them how to do it? This site is a big help with some of those questions. It covers: choosing a subject, organizing, revising, editing, documenting sources, informal essays, thesis/support essays, argumentative essays, and exploratory essays. Rolling the cursor over each different subject will show what it includes.
In the Classroom
This site gives activities and suggestions about how to involve kids in what they write. The wide range of grade levels addressed is also attractive, although it is geared more for high school students. Have student use the Explore tab to find links for coming up with new ideas to write about. Don't forget to look at "The Journalists' Questions" in the middle of the page.There is a memberhsip option. If you allow students to join, you should first get parent permission. Members are able to create journals and participate in collaboration, but you should have firm Internet Safety policies in place, if you decide to use these in class.

This is another rich site from a university that enables you to click through to get exactly what you need for writing ideas, skills, and support. THe two main , Writing Processes and Types of Writing, address a wide range of specific writing needs. Clicking on the Teaching Resources tab at the top of the page gives you everything from planning and conducting classes to teaching with technology and writing across the curriculum.
In the Classroom
This is a terrific site that allows as much use or as little as you want: instructions for students, addenda instructions for the teacher, wide-ranging topics, or single skills. It also offers some good refreshers for teachers who have not taught writing in awhile or are looking for new ways to approach it, particularly using technology. This is an amazing site for kids who ask, "But what did they WEAR?" In today's fashion-conscious society, looking at the past is often quite amusing, eye-opening, and insightful. A worthwhile site for teachers of theater, history, English, and even family and consumer science -- since the site even includes some patterns. Clicking on any of the options in the opening menu will take you to specific areas of that subject through history. The "Costume History sorted by Period" is truly fascinating as it offers drawings, patterns, and rationale for clothing of different time periods, including materials used and practical reasons for everything from codpieces to headdresses.
In the Classroom
This is a HUGE site worth dipping into for everything from history of clothing to wedding rituals and ceremonies of all kinds. As you introduce the setting of a new piece of literature or study of a new historical period, share this site to make another time "real" to your fashion-conscious teens. Include this site for fashion, costuming, or customs as one of the student research topics for a time period or lit study.Note: The site is not terribly attractive as a set of links. It also has advertising and links to "outside" topics. Give precise directions for where students should go.

A Free, Interactive Course in Studio and Field Production-- This is a free course aimed at students interested in going into television production. It is exhaustive in its entirety and covers all aspects of the production from scripts to news reporting, editing, legal and ethical issues, etc. While it is geared to college students, upper level high school students would do well with some of this as well, especially those motivated by this subject matter. It also offers the entire course in Spanish and Portuguese.
Clicking on the "Readings and Information" menu will give you a "classroom related" menu that includes lesson plans and ideas. Scrolling down the main page, you can check on interactive test, crosswords, quizzes, video projects, and notes for both students and teachers.

Use this website to help students of all ages learn to be safe online and in the real world. Included are short video clips that are sure to catch the student's interest along with plans for class discussions and activities. See the various topics under "choose an Issue" lower on the page. Activity cards and safety pledges are available in Spanish. There is a very rich collection of information here.
In the Classroom
If you know you will be using the Internet during class or assigning it for outside work, consider sharing some of the safety lessons ahead of time using a projector, especially with elementary and middle school students. Secondary English, information literacy, or computer teachers should consider requiring teens to report on an Internet safety topic as a research project as you are trying to both teach and USE research skills. This site could be a good topic-finder and starting point.Provide a link on your teacher web page to give parents a resource for talking about Internet safety with their children at home. Bookmark this site on a classroom computer for students to visit when they have free time.

This is a another wonderful site for the NEH that encompasses both history and literature in a study of the Salem witchcraft trials with Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible. It has a complete lesson plan for 10-12 days with included activities and final projects as well as lesson extensions, all in a printable format. This one is a real bonus for either English or history teachers!

While this site includes lesson plans for 10-12 days, it is easy to dip in and out of the activities, molding them to whatever it is you want to teach and the approach you want to take. It includes everything from maps to each of the Hogwarts houses to character descriptions to chapter-by-chapter summaries and essays about the books written by experts. Click on "The Wizarding World" and see the complete breakdown of what is covered. Just try to find something that is not!(Avoid the items for sale).

The graphics alone on this site make it worthwhile! Students will be captivated by the artwork. The Wizarding Maps are great for your visual students and in case you're worried about your science-minded kids trying the magic spells or potions, those pages direct students to the pages in the different books where they are referenced. An amazingly adaptable set of lesson plans (roughly 4 lessons of 45-minutes)in which students will:
--gain insight into various methods authors use to build characterization.
--experience the creative process of developing a character.
--broaden understanding of the role of minor characters.
--explore the inferential power of images and literary allusions to enhance characterization.
--understand ways the text mirrors attitudes, values, fashions, manners, and mores of the time period.
--experience growth in the writing process, oral skills, skills of research, contextual analysis, and collaboration. Then, Students will apply methods of characterization with two quick writes.

--experience the creative process of developing a character.
--broaden understanding of the role of minor characters.

This ia a very interesting site for teaching the literature and humanities areas of WWI. You can follow interactive "paths" or create your own path. It highlights several lesser known British poets and photographers from that time period and contains some things found nowhere else on the 'net. Some of the archives include media components, such as video that may require Flash. History teachers may want to use some of these materials to familiarize students with the culture of the times.
In the Classroom
This could be used very easily as part of a webquestor web scavenger hunt. You could also use it in the classroom on a projector or whiteboard to show different elements or types of war poetry. Make sure you have the correct plug-ins if you are using video portions.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Create photo trading cards using images you upload or store on Flickr, Instagram, or Dropbox. Imagine having your students create study aides about famous people using images they draw and scan or photos of themselves impersonating the famous people, such as presidents, explorers, authors, and more. If you celebrate reading by having an "author's tea," why not follow up by asking students to make trading cards for the authors they "met"? Use a similar approach for famous historical figures or even for geometric shapes you photograph with the digital camera. If students write their own "biographies" of the shapes to study from, they will learn for sure! They can even trade each other for favorites.
In the Classroom
Upload and tag your photo, type information, and print cards. Download finished card to your computer. Use for book reports for literature circles with each student in the group making a card for a different character in the book. This is also an excellent idea for special occasions for special people: mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, school nurse, school secretary, school custodian, favorite aunt, or anyone else! Be sure to print onto cover stock and laminate (if possible). What fabulous (and memorable) gifts. Check out the Big Huge Labs educator account.
