Art, Literature, U.S. History - Works by some of the greatest photographers of the 20th century are represented in this massive collection of powerful images documenting memorable events in American politics and culture. Project selected photos in class to introduce an event in history, inspire student photographers, or introduce a writing prompt. The sight is searchable and quite user-friendly. A fee is required to download images.
In the Classroom
Use the photos found in this site for writing prompts. Search within the site or browse the subjects offered to find one that corresponds to a unit being studied. A good example would be the images taken of the Great Depression. Pull up a select few of the images and prompt students to tell the story of what is happening in the image, the emotions seen, and what kind of impact this is meant to have of the viewer. An activity like this does require some background knowledge so this might better suited towards the end of a unit as review. Click on the Learning Hub and select a level (elementary, middle school, or high school) to explore age-appropriate challenges across content areas. Many of the activities on this site are free, but registration and a fee are required to access some of the special features.
In the Classroom
Use the free quizzes to help students review OR as pre-diagnositc quizzes to determine what students already know about the topic. This is a great way to assess which areas need strengthening and which areas students need less help in. OK - this one's just for fun. These tongue-in-cheek synopses of literary pearls are hilarious and BRIEF! Few authors escape the treatment; nearly every writer from Shakespeare to Steinbeck is represented on these pages. Some synopses are better than others - check out their version of A Tale of Two Cities - but all are quite clever! Use to generate some lively pre or post-reading discussion in class, or kick off a lesson on satire with several choice examples. Other features include a database of quotations and a carefully monitored literature forum - appropriate for teachers or serious high school literature students. In the Classroom
Use the quizzes on this site to test what students already know or are learning amidst a unit. Quizzes can be found within each author's heading, and relate to each major piece of work of the author. Search by poet or title to locate texts and biographical information. Visit the Listening Booth to give your students the opportunity to hear the voices of Robert Frost, T.S. Eliot, and many other beloved American poets! The site also contains information about National Poetry Month, celebrated every April, and a list of major American poetry awards with recent recipients.

The curricular resources are designed primarily for the elementary classroom, but older students will enjoy the on-line essays and poems. If 19th century British authors are part of your curriculum spend some moments browsing through this site that sheds light on the lives and work of the authors of Wuthering Heights and Jane Eyre . Walk the streets of the Town of Haworth in Yorkshire and experience the village as it was known by the Bronte sisters. Visit the chronology section to discover connections between events in the personal lives of the sisters and the economic, political, and social conditions of the world in which they lived. A family tree, comprehensive biographical information, summaries and analyses of the novels, and links to related resources are provided.
In the Classroom
Use this site as a introductory activity before reading one of the many books by one of the Bronte sisters. The family history will provide some background on the two authors, that would be great contextual information for students before beginning a class reading of one of their novels. Have cooperative learning groups explore the information, with the intentions of summarizing the main points in a multimedia presentation. Make the Bard more approachable for younger students with this clever, interactive resource. Kids of all ages can enjoy delving into the life of Queen Elizabeth and the works of William Shakespeare. Explore full texts of plays in PDF format, interactive word games, challenges, and puzzles, historical lessons (some are interactive), and fun facts about Shakespeare and his theater. A word of caution: many of the activities on this site require prior knowledge of Shakespearean plays and characters. Choose wisely based on the level and language skills of your students, and the depth of your study of Shakespeare. Use to introduce the Elizabethan era, review important concepts, or extend a literature unit with a bit of history. Created by the Folger Shakespeare Library.
In the Classroom
Share some Shakespearean insults and vocabulary by way of introduction to students on a projector or interactive whiteboard before allowing students to use it individually or with a partner. Access the sections entitled "games, challenges and puzzles," and save them as a favorite on classroom computers for use as a learning center or station. Have students complete some of the puzzles or crosswords as a way to review a unit on the Playwright or courtship, courtly love and of course - Queen Elizabeth. Challenge students explore the site and create a quick presentation of what they learned. Students can create brief online posters using a tool such as Padlet, reviewed here.

Though archived, this Web companion to the Norton Anthology of English Literature is still accessible and is an entertaining and revealing resource for understanding the society and culture behind the literature! Texts and contexts, discussion questions, Web resources, and illustrations are provided for each era of English literature from the Middle Ages to the Twentieth Century; a review section includes online multiple-choice quizzes. Audio readings in Old English and Middle English provide a unique opportunity for students to hear and experience the evolution of the English language. Definitely a content-rich but high level Language Arts resource. RealPlayer required.
In the Classroom
Use the multiple choice quizzes in each section as review tools for students before an assessment. Students cam complete them in learning centers that are designed to help them study, or in a competitive manner in cooperative learning groups. This collection of digital sound recordings (in MP3, RealAudio, and wav formats), corresponding transcripts, and photographs provide an authentic experience in the study of slavery in America. Interviews conducted between 1932 and 1975, reveal how former slaves felt about their owners, their families, and their freedom. All recordings are taken from the American Folklife Collection of the Library of Congress.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on the interactive whiteboard during a unit on slavery in the 19th century. Have students explore the site in cooperative learning groups, with the intentions of presenting a summary of the information they've seen. Students can present the information from a particularly perspective or as though they're reteaching it to their peers.
