Students or teachers can create their own flash card files. Registration is required but free and allows users to search a public access flash card set database of over 1,400,000 items organized by subjects.

In the Classroom

Students will love using the computer to create and save flash cards! Show your students how to use the site on a projector the first time, then have them create their own flash card sets or sets for their classmates as part of review for unit tests. Use YOUR user account for student safety. Be sure to search for card already made, but remember that others COULD have errors. Always pre-check before letting students use someone else's set.

A great source of primary documents covering many topics of interest to grade school children including the real stories some of the people killed on Sept. 11. Although this is usually a pay site ($9.95/yr), free membership is available for educators, schools, and libraries. Each feature article is divided into "Story Chapter Links" and highlighted vocabulary clicks to photographs, maps, artifacts, documents, audio-visual clips, and articles with more information about the word. Topics offered include history, culture, literature, disasters, and media. You can find passages on topics related to almost any student's interests and use the resources to teacher reading skills. In December, 2006, Awesome Stories announced free accounts for individuals, as well, but for a "limited time." If you would like your students to be abe to use it at home, consider setting up accounts for students, as well, while they are free.

In the Classroom

This is a great jumping off point for beginning researchers. You will find a wonderful compilation of photographs and other realia about the topics. Teach comprehension skills by using the first four chapters and asking students to predict or write aht they think would come next. Bring up the stories on an interactive whiteboard to highlight important terms and access the links that help students build connections to content. Maybe let students select the next topic to help engage reluctant readers.

This site is a much-expanded remake of the Peace Corps collection of lesson plans and activities for cross-cultural understanding around the world. Teachers can search for lesson plans by topic, region of the world, grade level, or academic subject. All readings and materials are included (many as PDF - Acrobat Reader files). Many lessons include readings that would also work well for teaching reading comprehension, espceially for your less-than-proficient readers. Simply choose the area of the world, subject, and/or grade level for which you want a lesson plan, and you will see quite a list.

In the Classroom

Search for lessons on a specific region as you teach about it or use these selections as general readings for comprehension. Consider using a guided reading activity with a tool like Read Ahead, reviewed here. Read Ahead is perfect for introducing any reading passage to struggling readers, special education students, and ENL/ESL learners. The lessons may also be helpful in getting to know students who enter your classroom from other cultures. The lessons would be very helpful in developing background knowledge to understand cross-cultural literature selections in a language arts class.

This site provides teachers with ready-to-use agricultural lessons that are both interactive and interesting to students of all ages. The site is geared towards grades 4-8, however there are activities for students in grades K-12. Students will enjoy the interactive "corn" scavenger hunt, witnessing the birth of pigs, seeing the Iowa of 150 years ago, virtual field trips and more. The web site is interdisciplinary and teacher-friendly.It includes numerous lesson plans (most interactive) and lots of new approaches to teaching subject matter. Requires QUICKTIME for video.

In the Classroom

This web site is perfect for combining students' love of technology with standards in science, history, technology, information literacy and language arts. Especially unique are the interactive scavenger hunts and virtual field trips that allow students to step "out of the classroom." Partner students on computers for the scavenger hunt or take a virtual field trip together on a projector.

Designed to capitalize on young students' interest in animals and pets, this is more a collection of "idea starters" than actual lessons. ASPCA offers basic ideas and templates; you'll want to add your own context in a Language Arts or Math lesson. The subject matter, though, is likely to keep students' attention.

In the Classroom

Use the classroom ideas in this class during a unit or lesson on persuasive speeches and writing. Animals are usually a soft spot for students, and animal care and cruelty may be an easy area to get students passionate enough to care about writing a good persuasive piece. Show students the information in any one of the packets, and have them write a persuasive speech or essay in partners about their topic. If having students write speech, take it to the next level and have students make podcasts of their speech. We recommend using a site such as PodOmatic (reviewed here).

This online game, specifically designed for blind or visually impaired children, was developed by PBS in consultation with the National Center for Accessible Media. It's a challenging memory activity that asks students to safely lead D.W. through a dark room to get a glass of water without stepping on a toy and waking baby Kate. To accomplish this, students must listen carefully to verbal descriptions that reveal the exact placement of each toy. Make sure that students select the "audio" option before beginning the activity. Headphones required.

In the Classroom

This site is also useful for students as an activity that strengthens memory skills, concentration, and attention to detail. Include this game with others as part of your lessons about disabilities. As part of your overall unit on disabilities, ask students to use Book Creator, reviewed here to share ideas on how to adapt areas of your classroom and school for disabled students. Include student drawings, pictures, and writing projects in your ebook.
