Challenge your students to a discussion using the ideas from Thinkalong, reviewed here. To help students prepare for the discussion, have them write about their opinion(s) for selected questions first. Replace paper and pen and have students create blogs sharing their thoughts and understanding about the book. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, exchange paper and pen and challenge your students to create a blog using Seesaw, reviewed here. After completing the discussions, challenge older students to choose a question and create a script for the ideas that emerged from the discussion; then strengthen student learning and have them put it into a podcast. We've found a golden ticket! The Roald Dahl Story Company offers a colorful PDF that will enhance any classroom's reading of this cherished chocolate tale by Roald Dahl. We love the simple but well done literacy activities accompanied by illustrated by cartoon characters. Be sure to project them as you explain the lesson. Story questions, themes, and excerpts are organized by chapter. There is a list of materials and lesson plans for sale at the end, but this review is only for this free lesson plan.
In the Classroom
This site works really well with an interactive whiteboard or projector. Students can view the cartoon figures on the board and then review what to do on the handouts on the interactive board. The printables can be used by an entire class or for individual students. During times of remote or distance learning, put a link to this site on your class web page for parents and students to use at home, with directions for what you want them to do, of course. Here's one of the rare sites with a brief lesson for the well loved story Sounder. This one, created by Easy Fun School, has some facts about the author William Armstrong and a few vocabulary word suggestions. A set of Questions and Activities are included that can be great for reading comprehension, class discussions, and as short writing assignments. Teachers will find the questions useful when planning the study of this compelling story.
In the Classroom
If you are using the questions as short writing assignments, consider having students answer them using an online blogging tool. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, exchange pen and paper and have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. This blog creator requires no registration. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, replace pencil and paper and challenge your students to create a blog using Seesaw, reviewed here. Some of the questions call for reasearch. Native American cultures offer wonderful examples of oral traditions and storytelling. This site from PBS provides examples of these, a look at some common story themes, and audio files with a number of different stories. Try using this one in a study of Native Americans or as part of a unit on stories from different cultures. Although this site is slightly dated, and some of the audio files are not updated, the content of this site remains relevant and useful to many classes; there is a lot of good information here.

Use the educators guide to find ways to incorporate this site into your classroom, either through lesson plans or classroom activities. Besides the list of the yearly winners and the accompanying honor books, the site provides access to previous winners dating back to the 1920's. Information about the Newbery award is in the left sidebar along with links to other important children's book medals, including the Caldecott (for illustration and other art).

Use this list to help your students choose some new literature to read. Provide this link on your class website for students and parents to use to find quality literature.
