Use higher level thinking skills and provide active learning by using the lessons on this site. Visit the "Lessons" page to view lessons grouped into four categories: Concept Lessons, Project-Based Learning, Exploratory, and Measurement. Use the "Community" page to collaborate or submit lesson ideas. Click on the "Update" page to view new lessons or resources added. This site, created by a college professor, offers a great deal of information about algebra and the general fundamentals of upper level mathematics. The site features tutorial videos, online lessons (non-interactive), study skills tips, a learning style inventory, internet homework assignments, and more. Although the site was created for beginning college students, it could easily be used in high school algebra classes.
In the Classroom
If you teach algebra or other high school math subjects, save this site in your favorites. Use the homework assignments and online lessons for instructional purposes or additional practice of newly learned skills. Share the tutorial videos on an interactive whiteboard or projector. This site offers FREE interactive math tools: qualitative grapher, piecewise linear grapher, linear transformer, function analyzer, quadratic transformer, system solver, plopit, and proportioner. Originally the interactives required special software, but they now run directly from the web site without any special installation or download. The interactives all include a real-time connection between math concepts (graphical or symbolic) and the representations. The activities provide visual illustrations to enhance algebra class. They allow for accelerated learning. And you are even able to save images to share with classmates.
The "Qualitative Grapher" demonstrates the meaning of a function and see how it can be seen as something changing over time. The "Proportioner" highlights scale and proportion and allows you to compare image dimensions. All of the other individual activities highlight other upper level math skills. This site requires Java and Adobe Acrobat. You can get both from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

This online calculator is able to graph in two or three dimensions. The advantage is the ability for all students to have the fastest, most capable calculator in class. Calc5 can be used to graph sin graphs, logarithms, and likely any graph needed in High School Math classes. A graph can include multiple functions. In order to see them, simply drag the graph. It is easy to zoom in and out of the graph. Students can take a screenshot of the graph in order to show in assignments or an online space. In Mac, simply hold the apple, shift, and number 4 key at the same time. Use the cursor (now a cross-hair) to drag a box around the picture and let go. The picture will be saved to the desktop. For PC, use the "Print Screen" button, then PASTE into any document or PowerPoint.

Students can predict the shape of 2D and 3D graphs from the equation being used. Found a math problem that is difficult to solve? Use Mathway to solve basic math problems such as long arithmetic, unit conversions, variables, expressions, and integers, and much more. Mathway also helps in the solving of other math problems in Pre-algebra, Algebra, Trigonometry, Pre-calculus, and Calculus. Sample problems are displayed in order to show manner of entering the problems. Click on symbols and shapes to enter the information easily. Solution to the problem is shown step by step. Solve problems, create graphs, or view the glossary.
Note: Ads do run along the top of the site as well as a link to live Math help. This link leads to tutor.com which is a fee-based service. Students should be cautioned about the fee-based site.

Math train is a "kids teaching kids" math project created from Mr. Marcos (and his students) of Lincoln Middle School. Browse student created, teacher created, or captioned math videos easily found using the search function. Videos can be viewed without a login. Most videos focus on a very specific topic and are short in length. Use the url or the embed code to share the video and add comments. Teachers and students can join math train and upload videos to teach math concepts to others. Registration requires an email account. Check your district's acceptable use policy regarding student use of email addresses. This site requires Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page. Note: the "we are upgrading" message does not prevent you from using the site!

Use this site as a resource to teach students basic and more complex math problems. Use your interactive whiteboard or projector to share this site with your students. Students can also be assigned a similar project in the classroom for peer teaching and learning. Use a class website or wiki to show your student-created video or register on the Math train site to upload video in this education-specific environment. (Of course you will want to check your school policies on sharing student work online. You might even use the Record feature of your interactive whiteboard software, if your computer has the memory to handle it. Have students view a video and create problem sets for other students to solve. Students can identify potential real life problems and the math skill necessary to solve it. This is definitely a site that you will want to save in your favorites and visit often (they add new videos frequently). Although we don't usually highlight a site that is simply a list, this list is worth mentioning. There are literally hundreds of math activities at this site (all Java applets). The activities are divided up into the following categories: Arithmetic, Math Games & Puzzles, Logic, Fractals & Chaos, Fallacies, Calculus, Combinatorial Games, Algebra, Visual Illusions, Computer Math Magic, Combinatorics, Geometry, Eye Opener Series, Social Science, Mathematical Droodles, and Analog Devices. Each category has numerous interactive activities included. The site is frequently updated. There are some small advertisements at the site. This site is simple to use and offers a wealth of options for many grade levels. The activities are not time-consuming and offer simple explanations with the applets.

This site has great simulations in Math that can be used with an Interactive Whiteboard. Math categories include "Algebra," "Data Handling," "Number," "Shape, Space, and Measure," and "General Maths." Specific topics include "Reading Scales," "Rotational Symmetry," "Shop Addition," "Prime Snakes," and "Number Cylinder." Information and ideas for use on each Interactive can be found both on the site and as an Adobe PDF download.

Show difficult-to-understand concepts on the interactive whiteboard or projector. Use these Interactives by having students predict outcomes and then carry out the experiment, such as in rolling die to determine probabilities. Students can then apply the information to a new set of problems. Use many of the interactives as a class game. Though perfect for the whiteboard, they can also be used on individual computers or as a computer learning station.

Test Designer allows teachers to quickly and easily create multiple-choice, true or false, fill-in-the-blank, and open-ended questions for tests and worksheets. Browse through thousands of previously-created tests in subject areas such as Algebra, Earth Science, Geography, U.S. History, and Vocabulary. Test Designer also provides simple graphics that can easily be added. Teachers can e-mail tests and worksheets to students, teachers, and parents. Make sure to allow plenty of time to read directions and maneuver the site prior to creating tests. There are some minor unobtrusive advertisements at this site. The required membership is free!

Although this website appears "plain vanilla" it is really extraordinary! The Bitesize Algebra website includes review activities (titled "revise" at this BBC website), interactive videos, online tests, and more. The main topic areas include Formulas and Equations, Inequalities, Graphs, Quadratic Graphs, & Sequences. Each topic area includes numerous subtopics. This site was created by BBC, so you may notice some slight spelling differences and British currency instead of dollars. If you are outside of the UK, the video may say the content is not available in your location. The rest of the content is well worth your time.

This is a fabulous site to use with your class to review concepts that are difficult to grasp. Use an interactive whiteboard or projector to share the revise(review) information and activity. As the name suggests, this website offers numerous math videos. The videos answer specific questions (sent in by students). General topics include numbers and their properties, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percents, geometry, measurement, data, word problems, and advanced topics. The website currently features 20-30 videos. New ones are frequently added. Students and teachers are able to send in specific math questions, but the response time is currently "on delay." The videos are mainly audio with simple illustrations.

The possibilities at this website abound. The website offers both audio and visual descriptions for each math topic, thus enabling you to reach your visual and audio learners. Use your interactive whiteboard or projector to share a specific topic with your students. Or make the videos a learning center for students to explore independently, and view the videos that relate to their individual needs. This website is truly a rare find - combining math and reading skills. Although the main page is aesthetically plain, the activities are very challenging. Most are set-up as word problems that require reading, comprehension, math skills, and more. The "outline math problems" provide students with 3-5 choices. You simply click on the blank and the choices for the answers are provided. There are activities for primary grades (such as basic addition practice) as well as advanced activities for secondary grades (such as geometry concepts). Many of the activities require JAVA. There are links for students, teachers, and parents. This resource provides excellent introduction lesson plans and highly creative games and activities. Be warned - this website does have some advertisements, but the content is wonderful. If you are looking for a way to review, re-teach, or introduce a math concept, take a few minutes to visit this website.

This website, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, provides an enormous collection of "web lessons" (interactives) for all grade levels. There are lessons in language arts, math, science, social studies, and health. There are too many lesson plans to count - and all are projector, laptop, or whiteboard-ready. Just to give you an idea of some of these unique lessons, some of the titles include "Where is Japan?", "Walrus World", "Piece of Pie", "Medians", "Fence Me In", and "Critter Craze". On the main page, a brief description is provided for each lesson plan. Click Teacher Solutions > Lesson Plans to search by subject or grade level.

If you want ready-to-go lessons guaranteed to work well on your interactive whiteboard, this collection is a winner. You simply open the activity on the whiteboard and have students tap and drag their way through as you talk with the class. This fabulous collection of lesson plans, activities, and web links from NCTM is a professional treasury for math teachers. The two menu selections at the top, Lessons and Interactives, are actually drop down menus to find lessons by grade levels, Brain Teasers, Mobile Apps, a Web Sketchpad, and more. The interactives are a challenging practice for concepts ranging from basic fractions and graphing to congruence theorems. Narrow your search with keywords. Each activity includes a description and grade level recommendation. Highlighted activities and Lessons on the home page change often. Many lesson plans also include technology links, but others are low-tech or no-tech. Illuminations is created by NCTM.

Keep this one in your professional favorites to find supporting technology for any math concept. As you find practice or extension ideas for student use or at home reinforcement, share specific links on your class web page or classroom computer center for students to access independently or as you assign them for needed practice.
