This Website presents the stories behind the farms, homes, people, and culture of Midwestern America. The American Dream is traced through historical photographs documenting the booming family farms that once dotted the landscape. Students can take a virtual tour of a prairie farmhouse, and explore the "literary connection" by following links to classic works inspired by rural America. This would be an excellent addition to a unit on westward expansion or twentieth century American literature. There is plenty of information at this site to learn from, though the sections labeled "virtual" require Flash.
In the Classroom
Use the "virtual farmhouse" as a learning center or station during a unit on Westward expansion or while establishing background for the Dustbowl. If using to provide context for the Great Depression, have students compare the prairie of the site to what the prairie turned into during the great drought of the 30's. Use an online tool such as Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram (reviewed here). This college-level writing guide for history papers from Bowdoin College may be beyond the scope of some secondary students. But for those who can already compose a cogent paragraph, it offers great suggestions on research process and assembling a paper that uses primary resources. AP history and social studies teachers may want to review this one and suggest or adapt it for their students. There's a wealth of information here.
In the Classroom
Open this site on the interactive whiteboard or projector and have students read the information before beginning their first big research paper. (Teachers can also print the information, but why not save some trees?) The short introductory essay offers some great tips for paper writing and has reference points for students with more questions. Have students look at the rest of the information on their own or refer students with questions to it. Add a little bit of economic reality to a 20th century American history lesson. Just choose a country and year, and this site will provide exchange rate data between the United State dollar and foreign currency. Changes in currency units for countries throughout the world and links to related resources are included.
In the Classroom
Use this site as an aid for discussing the price differences and comparisons between todays world and now. This information would be great when discussing early American history, when most books and colonizers make reference to British currency. Teachers can either translate the currency before class, or can have students complete it as an in-class activity. One way to do so would be to find a primary document or textbook article that mentions the severity of a tax on the 13 colonies. Have students complete the calculator to find out what colonists were really paying in comparison to what British-bound citizens were paying. use this to spur a discussion that then pro's and con's how severe taxes were and whether they were ample reason to revolt against Great Britiain.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

This is an interesting, teacher-created Webquest that includes several factors. It gives the students a task that involves both individual and group requirements.There are group tasks that involve selecting four themes for their final product including the changing role of women and the influence of Hollywood. The evaluation includes a rubric.
One of the nicest things on the site is the links that each group can use to access information they might use to complete their slide show or interactive poster. These links all go to reputable sites and give students adequate information while showing the variety of sources to get information on a topic. At the time of this review, all research sites were working except one.

This Webquest assigns both individual and group tasks, so while students are working together, they are also working individually, great practice for the workplace. You might assign roles to students within the groups to encourage cooperation, such as the director of the slide show or interactive poster, the writer, the editor, the layout editor, etc. This can isolate tasks for students while requiring them to know all the information necessary for the end product.Consider having students use Slides, reviewed here. This will allow students to automatically save their presentations, as well as easily share them from anywhere. Not to mention upload time is quick - a cure for the long waits in between student presentations. For the interactive posters consider using Genially, reviewed here, or Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here,

Its online database lets you search for immigrants who passed through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1924. Viewers will be interested in the sections on the history of American immigration, as well as the "American Histories" section, which shows how people have traced their own ancestry.

Spice up a history class and generate discussion with cartoons taken from the Smithsonian Institution's American Art/Portrait Gallery Library Collection. Images, dating from 1862 to 1955, reflect the power and popularity of this medium throughout American history. Can be browsed by title, artist, or subject.
In the Classroom
Art and History teachers will love this online collection of comic drawings houses by the Smithsonian. In a class discussion of validity of sources select a few images that were created to reflect on society or satire it. (We recommend Hogarth's engravings if your class is mature enough) Share the images on the interactive whiteboard or projector with the class. Start a discussion as to what students think the meaning and purpose of the image is. Do a few as a class and have students complete the rest of the images on their own. Have students write up a few quick sentences on the remaining images. Students can learn about particular composers and performers, and how their work built on the experiences of other jazz musicians.

This site details the life and many attempted voyages of the English explorer Henry Hudson. Although the site is very "wordy," it is very inclusive and excellent for research. It includes a lot of facts, maps, information about each voyage, information about nautical measurements, and details about his ships and crews. The information and maps available here are based on the author combing historical books and documents and information. An extensive bibliography and list of weblinks relating to Hudson adds interest to the maps and history on the site.
In the Classroom
Have the students make a cumulative map of all Hudson's voyages together in order for them to get a chance to become intimately familiar with the map making process. Try a site such as Zeemaps, reviewed here. Zeemaps allows students to create audio recordings AND choose a location on a map where each story takes place. Have each cooperative learning group focus on a different exploration. Compare their creations with the online map which has all four voyages combined. Assign students in a group each a few pages of an imagined journal Henry might have written on each voyage. The most interesting part will be to imagine what happened to him after people no longer heard from him! Use this site as the starting point for individual research papers. Encourage students to find other resources that contribute to their knowledge of Henry Hudson. Have students write a talk Hudson might give if he suddenly woke up today (like Rip Van Winkle). Or make it more Web 2.0 and have students write blog entries. The text passages on this site are also ideal for reading comprehension practice. The New 7 Wonders site has a full screen, 360-degree panoramic view of the officially proclaimed "New 7 Wonders of the World." These were voted on back in July 2007. The Coliseum in Rome, the Great Wall, Petra, Taj Mahal, Machu Picchu, Rio De Janeiro, and Chichen Itza won the vote. Each site is interactive in that you can view the area as fast or as slow as you'd like. Some of the 7 Wonders have information or links to information about them.
In the Classroom
Having one of these 7 Wonders up and rotating through the view (on your interactive whiteboard) while studying ancient Rome, the history of the Islamic religion, ancient China, or any of the others would be a real treat for students and can help them recognize that these cultures were once real people, with skills, and goals. Small groups or individual students can focus on one of the 7 Wonders. Students should research why the structure was built, its history (how long it took, how it was funded, etc), the type of materials, and the style of architecture used. Students would then report out to the rest of the class. Using the interactive whiteboard students can simultaneously navigate the structure they researched and annotate the different parts of the structure. Older students can annotate using an online tool such as Thinglink, reviewed here. If you don't have an interactive whiteboard, have students use Canva, reviewed here or a wiki to post their information, images and a link to the panoramic view they researched.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

This NPR article provides an overview of the life and influences of "the mother of the civil rights movement." Click on the links to hear excerpts and full length interviews in which Parks recounts the events of that historic day in 1955 when she refused to relinquish her bus seat to a white man. A compelling resource to add to a discussion of civil rights in America.
In the Classroom
The most intriguing part of this site are the audio portions where Parks recounts her story. Open the site on the interactive whiteboard or projector and play the portions during and within a lecture on Parks.
