Likewise, this can be used during discussions on the Legislative Branch, Separation of powers, Healthcare reform, environmental policy, etc. A great resource for a US government class.

This site from Militaryhistoryonline.com offers a complete military historian's resource for understanding the three days of the Gettysburg battle. This details in this site will be overkill for all but the most enthusiastic civil war buffs, but it provides an excellent overview of the events of the battle. If a field trip to Gettysburg is in your schedule, this site would be a great starting point for either teachers or students.

In the Classroom

Use this site to supplement a lecture on the battle of Gettysburg. The site offers a lot of battle layouts and images that would be useful if pulled up on the interactive whiteboard or projector. Before the lecture pull up the images needed on the interactive whiteboard to have them ready for class. The images are mostly battle lay-outs and diagrams, but are helpful to to portray the events of that battle.

Use this well-organized, comprehensive resource to explore the structure, function, history, and art of the Senate. Students can connect with their state senators and learn about legislative leadership; research and track bills, votes, or nominations; explore related art and exhibits; and discover books, documents, and other resources about Congress and the U.S. government. There is quite a bit to investigate on this site, and it is definitely worth a few class periods in the computer lab.

In the Classroom

Within the section on the Oral History Project are clips on various subjects. Most importantly for a Modern US history course is a clip on de facto segregation that could be played for students over a projector and speaker system. This would be a great supplement to a textbook, as well primary sources and oral history.

Use this site as a resource if making state profiles during an American History or Government class. At Digital Karnak you will find videos, photos, models, and PDF files with every thing known about Karnak in Egypt, one of the largest temple complexes in the world. On this massive site you'll be able to view the ruins as they look today and models of how they must have looked in ancient times. There are four options to choose from at the top of the home page or at the bottom is a link for the "Temple Complex Overview." There is so much to see and learn about the Karnuk Temple and the surrounding area that this is a must see for anyone who teaches ancient Egyptian History. A caution about the videos, the beginning of the videos shows architectural type drawings and animations; the middle to end of the videos will show models of how the buildings must have looked. For younger students, the middle to end of the videos will be of more interest.

In the Classroom

This site is so extensive, you'll want to go through it and pick out the concepts you think are important to your studies or you might want to have your students see how the temple developed over time during different dynasties. Have small groups of students look at the areas you choose for them to study, and then have them make presentations using your interactive whiteboard or projector and "Fine Tuna" reviewed here, highlighting the interesting and important facts about the temple and it's history. The timeline portion is not viewable due to the elimination of flash; however, the site contains other valuable information including the videos and images available.
 This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Click on 10 Easy Steps to find out how to implement this tried and true technique for cooperative learning in a classroom studying any subject. Basically, teachers divide classrooms into groups of 5 or 6 students and appoint one as the leader to direct and report on the group's activities. Teachers divide the day's learning into as many groups as there are in their classrooms. Students read their parts. Groups may exchange expert learners to report on what is going on in other groups. Back in the original groups, each group reports on its part and students have some type of evaluative activity, like a quiz or other summary activity.

In the Classroom

Have the students prepare a quick online presentation of their findings, results, summaries etc. Have each student or each group prepare one or two quiz questions to share with the entire class. Be sure help your weaker readers and ESL students by sharing the vocabulary words prior to reading, either on a handout or by projecting on an interactive whiteboard (or projector) and highlighting them in the text as you come to them. Balance your group selection by ensuring each group has strong and weaker students, girls and boys, students from different ethnic groups or nationalities, etc. Use this activity also as a way to review before tests. Have students present their findings in a multimedia presentation. Why not have students create an online book using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here.

The Evolution of the Conservation Movement documents the historical formation and cultural foundations of the movement to conserve and protect America's natural heritage. The collection consists of 60 books and pamphlets, 140 Federal statutes and Congressional resolutions, 34 additional legislative documents, excerpts from the Congressional Globe and the Congressional Record, 360 Presidential proclamations, 170 prints and photographs, 2 historic manuscripts, and a two-part motion picture. The chronologies, each with multiple links, are particularly useful for students.

In the Classroom

Use an image from each different period of the conservation movement for a visual discovery activity about the evolution. Select an image that represents each period, choosing the most powerful and moving images. Placing the images on individual slides, allow students 1-2 minutes to observe each image. During that time period, students should be taking notes based on what they observe, predict and infer about each image. The more powerful and detailed the image is, the more information students can take out. After the class has observed all the chosen images, have a class discussion based on the notes students took. This is a great way to introduce content in a way that gets students thinking, as well as avoiding the typical lecture format.

This site, created by the University of Virginia, examines the role of the press in creating the massive public reaction to the Titanic sinking. The site examines the large number of erroneous reports, as well as some of the sensationalized coverage of the tragedy. Excellent site for research or discussion-starters.

In the Classroom

These headlines do a great job of providing a detailed and reliable perspective that students may not consider when thinking about such a colossal human tragedy. Printing these headlines out or sharing them on a projector, students can use the headlines to lead students through the progression of events that led up to the sinking of the ship. This could also lead in to a conversation of media framing, with students comparing and contrasting the different stories coming from the various sources.

This application for note-taking is extremely simple to use, but performs in a very sophisticated way. There is a very easy text tutorial and FAQ to tell you about such features as creating an outline, accessing the DuckDuckGo search engine or looking up a word on the Merriam-Webster online dictionary without ever leaving your notes. It also connects to definitions from Wikipedia. And, you can automatically send your notes to your Amazon Kindle device. For math and science, the text tutorial will also show you how you can enter equations in your notes using the LaTeX format.

In the Classroom

If you do not approve use of Wikipedia, you will want to state this up front to your students. Before turning your students loose with this program, use your interactive whiteboard, projector and Quicklyst to show them how to put information in their own words. Then you can have them use Quicklyst to take notes for any type of summarizing or research. Create separate accounts on Quicklyst for student research groups. Students can then easily share their notes with their group members. Create a class account, and use your interactive whiteboard and projector along with Quicklyst to have the class create a study guide for a test on any subject. These can be saved and used for notes for a final test. If there is a common class password, students will be able to access the notes from home.

Bring the world to your classroom with this excellent list of virtual field trips. At the time of this review, there were nearly 40 field trips available! Take a trip to the Eiffel Tower, the Taj Mahal, or Rome. Choose any of the titles to visit the home site for the virtual field trip. Some of the titles have several virtual tours listed, i.e. 7 Wonders Panorama. Share any link via social media, email, or by using the code to embed in a website or blog.

In the Classroom

Immerse your students in your studies with a close-up in-depth look through virtual field trips. Visit places where time, money, and mileage inhibit your dreams for bringing your students into wondrous worlds. Find ways to visit where your class has never gone before. Find ways to motivate your most reluctant learners. For history teachers who teach ancient Rome, the history of the Islamic religion, ancient China, or just about any other historical topic, this would be a real treat for students. Help them recognize that these cultures were once real people, with skills, and goals. World languages teachers will be able to introduce different cultures from a new perspective. Small groups or individual students can focus on one of the tours. ENL/ESL learners will appreciate the visit. Reach all types of learners through a class visit. Use field trips as a whole class anticipatory guide, a center activity, a home connection, or even as extra credit. Challenge your gifted students to be guides to their own learning. Make your class go global!

These pages are part of an on-going project at Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia, to illustrate the numerous achievements of women in the field of mathematics. The site includes biographical essays or comments on the women mathematicians profiled, as well as additional resources about women in mathematics. Each time the home page is reloaded, a randomly selected photo is displayed. Click on the image to go to the profile of that woman. The site is also searchable by alphabetical order, chronological order, names by location of birth, the first PhD's in Mathematics of Women before 1930, and prizes, honors and awards for women mathematicians.

Share this site with students as a resource when writing biographies of famous mathematicians (or women's history.) Share one woman mathematician on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) each day as students arrive in class. This multimedia site, based on a Smithsonian exhibit, provides in-depth documentation of the Panama Canal's fascinating history. Start with the brief introductory slide show - and be sure to have your speakers on! Students can discover the purpose behind the construction, how the route was selected, what life in the Canal Zone was like, and many little known facts about the project.

In the Classroom

Introduce this site on the interactive whiteboard or projector before allowing students to explore it on their own. Have students go through the exhibit in pairs or cooperative learning groups on classroom computers to learn about the Panama Canal in a non-lecture format. This would be a useful site in a US history course, particularly for the upper reading levels. Challenge students to find an image for the most interesting facts they learned about the Panama Canal project. Then, have students create an annotated, narrated image, including text boxes and related links, using a tool such as Thinglink, reviewed here, about the facts behind the image they chose.

This site provides background information, timeline, and illustrated explanations of what happened during the gold rush. Originally intended to accompany the PBS documentary, the site can also be useful for those who do not have access to the video. If you choose to use the video, there are lesson plans and handouts to use before and after viewing. The A "Fun Facts" section of information is interesting for all.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the free lesson plans here that show you how to incorporate all the features of the site into a unit on the Gold Rush and Westward Expansion. Excellent resource for American history teachers, just be sure to save it as a favorite to allow for easy retrieval later on.
