Voices of Democracy features curriculum units based on significant speeches throughout U.S. History. The units are designed for college-level instruction; however, they also contain lesson plans for teaching speech at middle and high school. Find speeches by time, theme, author, or speaker. Each unit includes a video of the address (when available), the transcript, an interpretive essay, and learning materials. Learning materials for middle and high school learners include correlation to national teaching standards, a suggested teaching timeline, discussion questions, and featured vocabulary. If your district blocks YouTube, then the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Include these significant speeches as part of speech class or during history lessons related to the speech's topic or speaker. Clip portions of any video using ytCropper, reviewed here, for students to use when focusing on presentation techniques or content of the speech. For a more in-depth look at any video clip or the entire speech, use Timelinely, reviewed here, to add images, maps, links, and more to any area on the video timeline. As a final project, ask students to record their own speeches or present one of the featured speeches on Padlet, reviewed here. Padlet includes many tools to extend student learning in addition to the video recording feature. Ask students to use Padlet's features such as the Brainstorming Board, AI Art, various graphic organizers, images, and more to enhance their speech presentation. The Lost Museum is a 3-D re-creation of P.T. Barnum's American Museum. This pre-eminent cultural institution of 19th century America was mysteriously destroyed by fire on July 13, 1865. Roam freely among the four digitally re-created rooms. Move your mouse left and right or up and down when arrows indicate, to move around the room. Click"hot spots" indicated by a question mark "?" to access some of the vast number of items and exhibits Barnum displayed in his museum. Animations and close-up views reveal much of what the contemporary visitor to the museum might have experienced. An archive link appears beneath the museum window when viewing an item that has related documents in the Archive for viewing. Be sure to visit the classroom portion of the site for further materials and resources providing background on the social, cultural, and political history of antebellum and Civil War America. This interactive emphasizes issues of race, gender, reform, immigration, sectionalism, and popular culture. Several teaching activities are available with titles such as Fame and Fortune: The Marketing of Celebrity and The Debate Over Women's Roles in Public. This site mentions that it is not optimized for use on a Safari browser. You also must enable your pop-up windows.

In the Classroom

View this site on your interactive whiteboard and use the teaching activities as a supplement to information in the museum. Divide students into groups to complete the different activities. Have groups share their information usingScreencast-o-matic, reviewed here, or Screencastify (Chrome app), reviewed here, to make narrated recordings about information they find on this site.

This printable document from the National Museum of African American History and Culture provides information and resources to support students' understanding of Juneteenth. Content includes the history of Juneteenth and the importance of why young children should be included in Juneteenth celebrations. Additional sections share suggestions on when and how to discuss slavery with young children and suggested questions for age-appropriate discussions about slavery. Other links to books and online resources are available at the end of the document.

In the Classroom

Use this document as a resource for understanding Juneteenth while taking advantage of the suggestions for discussing slavery and civil rights in age-appropriate ways. Share this information with parents to help them understand the history of Juneteenth. As you talk about the questions found in this article, use Draw.Chat, reviewed here to add and share student comments and add images to enhance understanding. For example, ask students to describe "freedom" and then use text boxes to add their comments. During your discussion, upload images that depict freedom in several different forms. This article highlights the firsthand accounts and narratives of formerly enslaved individuals to shed light on their experiences and the impact of the announcement of the Emancipation Proclamation. It shares how the transmission of the news of freedom was delayed, along with the reactions and celebrations of the newly freed enslaved people. The article includes many links to primary source materials, including an extensive collection of stories from "Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writers' Project, 1936 - 1938."

TeachersFirst Reading Treks create a virtual field trip of resources about a piece of literature or text using the My Maps feature of Google Maps. This Reading Trek provides inspiration and suggestions for using the trade book, A Long Way from Chicago. During the time of the Great Depression and the beginning of WWII, Joey and Mary Alice, city children from Chicago, spend a week each August with their eccentric Grandma Dowdel in her rural home town. Over the eight years the story takes place, they learn to appreciate their Grandma's spunkiness and get to experience many situations that their parents would never allow them to encounter. Use our robust Instructional Guide with students in grades 4-8. Content correlates to Common Core Standards, ISTE Student Standards, National Core Art Standards, and National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies. The webinar includes several downloads and links to lessons, texts, and explanations of strategies focusing on telling complete stories and making connections. The webinar is approximately an hour long and accessible after completing a short registration form.

Take advantage of this free professional development to learn new strategies and access resources for teaching about slavery to students in elementary school. The information in the webinar provides ideas for teaching difficult history topics using current classroom materials and suggesting additional resources and teaching strategies. Consider viewing this webinar with other elementary teachers across grade levels as part of your professional development and understanding scaffolding of information throughout the elementary grades and preparing for middle and high school content. Although this webinar is for elementary teachers, it is also a helpful tool for upper-level educators to understand methods for teaching young students and applying them to middle and high school lessons. The Gilder Lehrman Collection, hosted by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History, is a remarkable online archive offering access to a vast array of primary sources in American history. Its collection encompasses more than 70,000 items, ranging from artifacts to documents, covering important moments and figures in American history from the 16th century to the present. In the Classroom

As its name implies, Nixon Tapes and Transcripts is dedicated to the collection of the tapes secretly recorded by Richard Nixon during his presidency. The collection contains over 700 audio files containing 2300 hours of conversation. There are various file formats: mp3, pdf, and others.The site is searchable. Choose audio & transcripts to find conversations by primary participants or selected themes. Each conversation includes information on date and time as well as links to download audio or a transcript.

In the Classroom

Use portions of tapes and transcripts during lessons on the Vietnam War, Richard Nixon, presidents, the 1960s and 70s, and more. Share a link to specific conversations on your class website, and have students create blogs. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. This blog creator requires no registration. Have students use Fakebook (reviewed here) to create a "fake" page similar in style to Facebook about participants in conversations during the Nixon era.

This blog follows the journey of Brett Kelley (Curator at the National Civil War Museum in Harrisburg, PA) as he spent two weeks recreating the life of a Civil War Picket Soldier. Daily posts include handwritten documents, images, and links to Brett's YouTube channel with videos from his time as a soldier. The blog displays in reverse chronological order, most recent first (as all blogs do). you will Scroll all the way to the bottom and work your way up to read entries in the order they occur. Another option is to choose "week 1" from the categories at the right of the blog and scroll to the bottom to begin, then choose "week 2" to finish.

In the Classroom

Include this journal as part of your Civil War unit. Have students read this along with diaries and journals of actual Civil War soldiers. Compare and contrast his experience with those of the soldiers. Share one entry per day and have students create their own blog posts in response with possible questions they may have, how they would feel in the same situation, etc. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Tumblr, reviewed here. For a more major project, create a blog as a class, having students take turns playing the role of one civil war soldier and adding to the blog daily.

The PBS LearningMedia website has an interactive timeline called "Causes of the American Revolution" that helps students learn about the events leading up to America's fight for independence from Britain. It covers important happenings and laws from the 1760s to the start of the Revolutionary War, showing them in order with explanations, pictures, and original documents. The site offers an accessible version for those who may need it and allows you to share it on Google Classroom or share a direct link with students.

In the Classroom

Students examine the timeline to identify where key events took place. Using Google My Maps, reviewed here or another mapping tool, have students create an interactive map that plots the locations of significant events leading up to the American Revolution, adding descriptions and images for each location. Have students use the timeline to gather evidence on the causes of the American Revolution and organize a class debate on whether the American Revolution was justified. Divide the class into two groups, one arguing in favor and the other against, using information from the timeline to support their arguments. Using ePubEditor, reviewed here have students create an interactive quiz using information they find from the timeline.

The Teaching of the Bill of Rights podcast is shared on Sound Cloud, reviewed here by the Lou Frey Institute and features a discussion with national civic education coordinator Kathleen Munn from the National Archives. The episode shares a conversation about teaching the Bill of Rights using primary source documents found in the archives and how archivists use primary source documents to ground discussions of the Bill of Rights through the actions of real people. Ms Munn also shares teaching ideas such as using Venn Diagrams to help students understand abstract concepts of rights and limits using student rights in the classroom and how they overlap with the Bill of Rights document.

In the Classroom

Listen to this podcast episode to gather ideas on developing lessons that teach the Bill of Rights in meaningful ways that foster students' understanding using scaffolds to students' frames of reference. Use the podcast as a model for students to create a Bill of Rights podcast as a learning activity. Create ten groups, then ask each group to design and create a podcast with each group discussing one of the original rights using a free podcast creation tool such as Buzzsprout, reviewed here. Visit the National Archives Educator Resources page, reviewed here to find additional activities and lesson ideas. After learning about the Bill of Rights, have students play That's Your Right, reviewed here, a digital card game provided by the Annenberg Institute. Challenge students to increase proficiency by beginning with the easiest level, then try to move successfully to the most difficult level.

This clever Flickr page shows a comparison of Richard Scarry's Best Word Book Ever published 28 years apart. Placing your cursor over the cover images will give you pop out descriptions of the differences in the two covers. You will also find images of some of the differences for the pages inside, with an explanation. Please note some schools block Flickr. So preview ahead of time! Also, remember Flickr does have comments from users.

In the Classroom

Do you still have a favorite picture book from your childhood? Consider going to the library to find a more current version and compare the differences. Have your students ask their parents if they still have a copy of their favorite picture book, and they can pick up a copy of the current edition to compare. With older students, you can use the Best Word Book Ever comparison to see the changes in what is politically incorrect now that was in the earlier version. Students then discuss what society valued at the time of the older edition compared to what our current society values. There are not just the gender role differences (policeman vs the woman police officer). Look at the wording in the older version for behavioral expectations, too. Literature teachers could carry this one step further and make a comparison of the expectations of society at the time of a classic (Tom Sawyer, Pride and Prejudice ) and what society valued during that time. Students could make one of these comparisons using a program like Bookemon reviewed here, which creates interactive online books. Make sure your students adhere to Copyright laws if creating online. You may want to work offline using PowerPoint so student products can include copyrighted images under "Fair Use."

Web of Stories is a very interesting collection of videos shared by some of the greatest scientists along with everyday people. It began as an archive of stories from scientists but expanded beyond science and into the realm of common life stories. Choices are from most popular stories, editor's choice, or featured films on the home page. The Lives portion of the site contains stories of people who have influenced the world: from Nobel Laureates to Oscar-winning cinematographers and more. Choose channels to find specific subjects ranging from Changing Faces (Living with Disfigurement), Sports, Technology, Family History and many more. You can upload your own videos using your computer's camcorder or with a prerecorded video. Register to add stories, recommend or comment on videos. Registration is not necessary to view videos. Caution: at the time of this review, a few videos dealt with topics appropriate for adults or older high school students, so please be sure to preview anything you wish to share. If you plan to allow students to explore on their own (which we don't recommend), be sure to closely monitor student use.

In the Classroom

Choose from videos on the site to watch on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) for any range of subjects. Make science more real by sharing these stories. Embed videos using the code on the site onto your class website or blog for students to view at home. Have students record responses using an online tool such as the Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram (reviewed here) to create a visual comparison of two different videos on any given topic. Share videos with students to view when exploring career options.

Stay informed about the latest information on Congress and upcoming legislation with Countable. This site offers summaries of forthcoming and active legislation and includes links for viewers to share their thoughts with legislators. Follow trending information from the home page to view current topics and explore further. Find information on specific topics by choosing the "Issues" drop down box. Depending on the content, articles summarize information, offer options for commenting on either side of issues, and include specific bill information including Congressional Budget Office (CBO) scores and possible impacts of the legislation.

In the Classroom

If you teach government or civics, this site is a must-have to use throughout the year! Share the current legislative information with students on your interactive whiteboard or through a link on your class webpage. As you progress throughout your unit or research topics, ask students to collect links of information, videos, and images using an organizing and bookmarking tool like Raindrop.io, reviewed here. Students can then create a website sharing information on the topic using Webnode, reviewed here. Webnode is a free website builder that includes many templates and an easy to use format. Take learning a step further and ask students to compile information supporting their opinions and facts on a piece of legislation and create a video to share their thoughts with a tool like FlexClip, reviewed here. FlexClip is designed to allow you to create short animated or explainer videos to share on YouTube and other social media sites.

This Reading Trek provides inspiration and suggestions for sharing the autobiography of Congressman John Lewis who as a student met Martin Luther King, was instrumental in the birth of the Nashville Student Movement and their "lunch counter sit-ins." Retro Report is an independent, non-profit newsroom sharing over three hundred videos and lessons focusing on bringing history to life for students. Browse through the home page to explore by subject or periods including America's Rise to Power 1890-1945, The Postwar Era 1945- 1980, and The Modern Era 1980- present. Visit the link on the home page to explore all topics, then use the options to search for specific terms, filter options by type of activity, or select from tagged subjects and topics. Another helpful option is the collections; choose this link to find collections curated for AP classes, topics such as 9/11 and The Supreme Court, and current topics including political ads and extremism. The lesson plans include links to all materials, including handouts, videos, and primary source documents. Lessons also correlate with Social Studies and Common Core Literacy Standards. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

High school social studies teachers will want to bookmark and save this site as an excellent resource for lessons and videos to accompany current lessons. Use the lessons to differentiate activities based on student interests. For example, when teaching about the Bill of Rights, offer groups of students different topics to explore from the provided lessons, including the Pentagon Papers, evolution in science class, conspiracy theories, and Waco as a 2nd amendment battleground. Use Padlet, reviewed here, or Wakelet, reviewed here as a curation tool for you and students to gather resources related to their topic. Ask students to share their findings using a presentation tool like the ones found at Canva Edu, reviewed here, which includes options for adding links to resources shared.

Find lessons, professional development, videos, and image galleries provided through firsthand testimony of Holocaust witnesses and survivors at this site shared by PBS as a supplement to Ken Burn's three-part series on the Holocaust. Choose resources sorted into topics: Media, Public Opinion, and Individual Choice, Immigration and the Refugee Crisis, Nazism and Antisemitism, and World War II and the Holocaust. Select any topic to view lessons and media correlated to state standards.

In the Classroom

Engage students in learning about the many different stories behind the Holocaust by including materials found on the PBS site within your lessons. Enhance learning by asking students to work in small groups to analyze primary source documents related to the U.S. response to the Holocaust. For example, share The Timeline of the Holocaust at Teaching With Testimony, reviewed here as a resource for understanding the timeline of events that features many primary source images. Extend student understanding and reflection of the Holocaust through a debate activity. Divide the class into two groups and have them debate whether the U.S. should have done more to help Jews during the Holocaust. Encourage students to research and prepare arguments and provide opportunities for both groups to present their cases and respond to each other. Create and edit videos using an online tool such as FlexClip, reviewed here.
