This extensive site about the international organization that existed from just after World War I until 1946 offers text and images that describe the League's aims and activities in detail. Housed at Indiana University, this site could be a great resource for a high school history term paper, or an interesting assignment for the study of World War I.

Social studies students and teachers will find this photo collection fascinating. The images document jobs and industries that no longer exist, but which were important in their day to keep the economy moving. The images date from around 1900 through the 1930s and 40s. Try this one to help answer the question, "What kind of jobs did people have back then?"
In the Classroom
Use the images on this site to create a "picture walk" in your classroom, introducing the topic of manual labor before the technological revolution after WWII. Select 10-15 of the more powerful and diverse images, hanging them up in different locations around your classroom. Have students rotate around the classroom every 30-45 seconds, jotting down what they observe and infer about each image until the entire class has completed the circuit. After the class is back in their seats, have small groups of students compare their observations and what it says about life during pre-modern technology. Then enter the group observations on Padlet, reviewed here. In the Classroom
Use the kids portion of this site as a learning center or station during a lesson on the Johnson Presidency. Based on what they've learned in the site, have students resummarize it in a "breaking news presentation," using PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. This site allows users to narrate a picture. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), and then narrate the photo as if it is a news report. The US Centennial of Flight Commission has prepared an extensive look at the Wright Brothers and their efforts to build a successful aircraft. This section of a larger site offers details on the journals, the specifications, and the reconstruction of the original Wright flyer. History and physics teachers alike will enjoy this one.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the free lesson plans and activities offered! There are also games that teachers can either print out and use as quick review activities or as a learning center or station. If using as a learning station, save the site as a favorite and have kids peruse it during a unit on Flight, the evolution of transportation or the Industrial Growth of the early 20th century.

These could make great classroom decorations, and the lesson materials are thorough and grade-specific. Try this one on students interested in the physics of flight or a career in aviation.

This is a nicely done animated site about the history of Minnesota for elementary students. It concentrates on major industries of the state as the basis for a portrayal of life in Minnesota in the late 1800s. the illustrations and stories have a sort of "comic book" feel, but the information is well designed and well presented. Students in other states will find this a nice introduction to nineteenth century life on the prairie.
In the Classroom
Use this site as an introductor or activator on a lesson concerning Westward Expansion. Introduce the site on the Interactive whiteboard or projector, before allowing students to explore the site in pairs. There's lots of great content in this one. Click Our Programs in the upper right corner to find he classroom section icalled Teach It, which ncludes lesson plans, as well as a series of very well done "journeys" that describe the industries and people that have had an effect on Connecticut history. Many of these are suitable for use in other states.

While this site has a number of incomplete "exhibit" areas, the associated lesson plans are there, and well worth a look for those whose curricula include immigration. It may take some trial and error to find those resources that fit best.

While this site really assumes the reader knows the story of the women who helped ferry aircraft of all sorts from factory to front during World War II, the various site elements offer glimpses of the people, airplanes, and places that made the WASPs an indispensable element of the war effort. The sounds add some additional realism. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. There are a couple of audio files that use Flash, however there is a LOT more to see on this site.
In the Classroom
Use the video on this site on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector to show students who the WASPS were as well as the contribution they made to the war effort. This would be a great addition to a lesson on WWII as well as the fight for equality between the sexes. Click on the Gallery and view Above and Beyond about the 38 WASPs who died during service to their country. The information here is very brief. You may want to ask small groups of students to select three of four WASPs to research and share their stories using a tool like Sway, reviewed here. While we wish more of these images were available on line, there are certainly enough photos in this collection to provide students with a sense of what war meant to America in the 1940s.

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on the battle front in WWII. The content is still valid, and would be a great center to break up others based on the battles and the men who are normally focused on. Go straight to the "Teachers' Corner" for synopses and write-ups ordered chronologically. These can provide some interesting additional texture for American history elements already in your curriculum.

One of the most useful parts of the site are the pre-prepared DBQ's that are seen predominantly in classes preparing for the AP exam. These include attention to twentieth century women who made their own accomplishments while living in the White House. Elementary students may find this one useful as part of a women's history study, or while learning about the presidency.
In the Classroom
This site would be extremely useful during an American History class. Use this site to provide students with knowledge of the too often forgotten members of the White House - our first ladies. Towards the end of the semester, use this site as a spring board for research projects on the first ladies. Students can use this site as a beginning in their quest for information.Another use would be to show the ever-evolving role of the First Lady. Review with students the information found on one of the initial first ladies - Martha Washington is an interesting one, and have students compare her role with that of a more recent First lady. To compare the two,use an online tool such as Interactive Two Circle Venn Diagram (reviewed here).

This site from the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts is almost as good as a field trip. Stuffed with images, video clips, and text, it offers a presentation on Modernism that runs from the British arts and crafts movement in the 1880s through to American Art Deco of the 1940s. There are images, text, and video narration for each segment, providing a nice evolutionary tour. Use the pieces together or individually as supplemental material for art history, or as an adjunct to an American or European history class.
In the Classroom
Use this site on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start your study of modernism in the past two centuries. Use the site's images and virtual exhibits to showcase the movement being talked about to compliment your class lectures. Another useful item is that some of the exhibits have a quick video clip that can help introduce the idea to your class in a way that foreshadows the rest of your lecture. It's an art and architectural style, not a school building. This site from the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts offers a visual perspective on the art and architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, William Gray Purcell, and others. In addition to showing works of art, the site offers several interactive tours of Wright houses, many in the twin cities area. Art teachers will use this one as a great American design example. There is a lot of information on this site. The a few complementary images (not the main images) for each topic require Flash.
