Students investigate the role and responsibilities of the presidency while comparing and contrasting each father-son pair. Includes suggested activities and links to online material about the presidents. The lesson plans are aligned to standards.

Take advantage of this "ready to go" unit with lesson plans, discussion questions, and activities, perfect for a President's Day celebration. Most of the activities are paper and pen or oral discussion. Consider using an online tool and integrating technology into this unit and your classroom. Looking for some new tricks to teaching this genre (fairy tales, folktales, and Myths) to your students? Check out this site that provides lesson plans, interactives, class activities, reproducible pages, and more. The lesson plans and activities are divided by grade level (K-3, 4-6, 7-9, and 10-12). The site says that the lessons (for all levels) will take approximately one day/class period.
In the Classroom
The possibilities at this site are endless! Take advantage of the grade-appropriate activities, interactives, lesson plans, and printables. Have students work with a partner to try out the Brainstorm Machine. Use this site to create a writing station. After studying the genre, why not have students create illustrated virtual books of their own using a free tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. Unfortunately, the included activity requires flash, which is not supported on all browsers; however, the lesson plans and activities provide a starting point for many lessons.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

In the Classroom
Why not feature an "inauguration a day" during the week prior to the current inauguration? Use the many images to create a Lino, reviewed here, of inauguration information for students to dig though. With older students, have cooperative learning groups create their own Lino. Are you looking for a new way to get your students attention in history class? This site is perfect for those students who view fashion as the only thing worth their attention! The site focuses on the gowns that the first ladies wore to the inaugural ceremony (from a variety of time periods). The significance of the gowns is discussed. Several photos are included. The video clips date back to 2001 and no longer work. For commentary and speculation on what Mrs. Obama and the Obama children will wear, see this article from Womens Wear Daily
In the Classroom
Share the pictures of the gowns on your interactive whiteboard or projector. There are printables, lesson plans (many with standards), photos, video clips, and more. The link Presidential Inaugurations lists countless resources to use in your classroom.

At first glance, this site may look a bit "plain vanilla," but dig a little deeper and you will find some real gems! The site (all about Martin Luther King, Jr.) offers research information and videos of several of King's famous speeches. There are also coloring pages for younger students. Find links to learn more about King, Rosa Parks, and the MLK Jr. Holiday. Be aware: this site does have numerous advertisements. At the time of this review, all advertisements were appropriate.

Share the video clips on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Have students close their eyes and visualize being at the speech in person... what did they see, what did they hear, what did they feel, etc. Have students write letters to Dr. King expressing their feelings about the speech. If you click on the Teacher Resources, you will find several activity guides to use in your classroom. Learn more about the Gettysburg Address, First Ladies, Women's History Month, Black History Month, Christmas at the Whitehouse, and more! Most of the guides require Adobe Acrobat. From the menu on the right, find interesting topics like Civil War Facts, Trigger Events of the Civil War, The Reason for Secession, and others, with links to additional information.

At the beginning of a unit on the Civil War, introduce this site to your students on your interactive whiteboard or with a projector. Depending on the age of your students you could divide the menu topics up for small groups to report on, or you could take one topic and divide the information up for small groups of younger students to report on. Nearly all of this site is displayed in a timeline format. There are some basic advertisements at this site, nothing too distracting.

Used to attack Union ships blockading the Charleston, SC harbor, the Hunley successfully sank the USS Housatonic, then mysteriously disappeared. This site is worth a look for both its scientific and historical possibilities. This site requires QuickTime. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.
