Use Flickriver as a new way to view photos from Flickr. Click the "Explore" tab to view recent pictures uploaded to flickr. Create your own flickriver stream and view all photos from other flickriver streams by registering and creating a flickr login. Use the search bar at the top to customize search by users, groups, tags, or places.
In the Classroom
Users must be familiar with how to use Flickr reviewed here.Create a class Flickr account to upload pictures of experiments, student projects, and items related to class content. Use Flickriver to pull these pictures in to view by the class. Use pictures to represent Math concepts, poems and stories, science concepts in the real world, or items belonging to cultures. Create a flickriver of art projects to display to the world. If students are allowed individual accounts, they could use this as a way to share their portfolios of artwork or digital images.

This site is useful for learning about both the technical and historical aspects of animation. Over seventy animated shorts date back as far as 1941. Several informative films explain a variety of processes animators' use and include biography pages. The section, "My Film Class", is specifically for children. It contains games, films, and activities for students. Many of the films on this site reflect on the human condition and have a strong philosophical message. The National Film Board of Canada organizes films into seven main themes such as citizenship, folk tales or rights and responsibility. There are a few postings for film competitions. This site is a "work in progress" with new material being added often, so be sure to check back.
In the Classroom
Provide background information about the filmmaker and the animation process used, before projecting a film shirt to the whole class. Download free lesson plans for each of their thematic units. Each lesson consists of three activities and a closing lesson. The content of the films will stretch a student's ability to think metaphorically, and understand symbolism. Use this site to inspire future animators. Encourage students to create their own films. Share the films on a site such as TeacherTube reviewed here. Provide opportunities for students to create stop motion films that use clay, paper cut outs or object animation. Explore the other various techniques they mention on this site. Younger children will enjoy the activities on "Animacat's House." Be sure to screen each film before playing them for your class. This site is excellent for enrichment. Include it on your class web page for students to access both in and out of class.

This is a treasure trove of contemporary photography and film. The "Forward Thinking Museum" is where students build knowledge of photography and film while discovering how the visual arts can elicit meaning. The website contains a listing of exhibitions by groups and individual artists. Right from the classroom, students can witness the work of artists worldwide and watch professionals speak passionately about their life's work. The enthusiasm of the spotlighted artists is infectious and inspiring. It is impressive how the site integrates the study of science, history, philosophy, and literature with the photographic experience. Every three months artists are encouraged to submit their own photographs for selection in their on-line virtual gallery.
In the Classroom
This website is useful for teaching the arts and to challenge your students higher level thinking skills. For example, quotations from history, literature, or philosophy synthesize with evocative images. The pairing of quotations with art provides teachers with an engaging way to initiate student discussion and debate. This is an excellent way to demonstrate how the visual arts can overcome language barriers and ignite thought. "Truth Against the World" is just one of many quotes by one of this century's leading architects. In this site, you'll find Wright's words on life, architecture, cities, television, god and nature, and even a quote on Marilyn Monroe. Any one of these quotes could be used as a springboard for expository theme writing.
In the Classroom
Make a shortcut to this page of quotes from Wright on classroom computers or include it on your class web page for students to use as a resource for projects. Have students include a quote when turning in work, and explain how it inspired or helped them. Add music or art to explain a quote. During the first week of the school year, share this site with students. Challenge students to choose a personal "quote of the year" to set the tone for their goals. Have students put the quote in their notebook, folder, or on their device desktop. Choose a few quotes to hang around your classroom. Show students how to keep favorite quotes in an idea bin where they keep thoughts, thoughtful questions, and pieces of inspiration. Here are two tools you might like for an idea bin for middle or high school students: Thoughtboxes, reviewed here, and The Sketchbook Project, reviewed here. This lesson site for the novel Frankenstein offers a variety of activities, themes, a summary, discussion questions, and a lot more for this story. Monster stories are popular with teenagers, and Shelley's Frankenstein is not what they expect it to be. However, this website provides motivation for students to delve into and discuss the meaning of true "monsters."
In the Classroom
This site includes standards, procedures, and extensions for studying Frankenstein as well as an intersting way to approach a trial for student discussion. Certainly worth a look for anyone who teaches this novel. Free Clip Art by Phillip Martin is an extensive collection of clipart. All the clipart is free to use in the classroom, in newsletters or presentations. As long as the use is for non-profit, it may be downloaded and used free of charge. Categories included in the site are Language Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Holidays, School, A to Z, and More. Each of the above categories has countless sub-categories within them. No registration is necessary and the site is extremely simple to navigate. Of course you will want to model and require ethical use of these resources by giving credit to the source of clips in a small note or text box on your projects. There are some unobtrusive advertisements at the site.

This site is great if you need some clever clipart to jazz up student handouts, classroom bulletin boards or PowerPoint/Keynote presentations. There is also web clipart that you can use for your blog, class webpage, or wiki. Interested in learning more about wikis? Check out the TeachersFirst's Wiki Walk-Through. When using the clipart be sure to download to your computer first before inserting into an application. Copying it directly from the web site puts a black background behind your image. Have students use this site in science class (or other classes to explain concepts and create colorful projects. This site offers a variety of graph paper to be downloaded in PDF form. Graph categories include squares, triangular, hexagonal, circular, brick, and note-taking. Within each category are several options. Be sure to scroll down the site to read the helpful tips before printing any of the graph paper. Note that the pdfs will also display on an interactive whiteboard for students to graph, draw, and more!
In the Classroom
Save the link to this site for easy access to any type of graph paper or grid you may need throughout the school year. Provide students the link through your class website or blog so that they can access graph paper to use at any time, including for homework. Print out copies of graphs to provide for students. Art teachers will find these grids and geometric patterns useful for teaching about fonts, design principles, and tessellations. Open a pdf on your interactive whiteboard for students to graph using the whiteboard pens or highlighters. You can even use the hexagon grids for students to create "quilt" designs to explore color schemes and repeated patterns. Have students construct geometric figures using various grids to demonstrate area and other geometry concepts on interactive whiteboard.

This fascinating site allows you to build your vocabulary and other knowledge while providing free grains of rice to the hungry throughout the world. This is a nice interactive way for kids to practice vocabulary and basics in chemistry, math, art history, geography, and world languages. Subjects available (via the link in the page footer)include checmical symbols, world language and English vocabulary, multiplication, world countries on a map, capitals, and famous paintings. Read the FAQ to find out where the money comes from and more.

Reminiscent of The Reader's Digest "Enrich Your Word Power" feature, this is a great little time filler, especially for those students who always seem to be ahead of the rest of the class. They can challenge themselves to better their "level" as gauged by the site. They can challenge each other to see who will give the most grains of rice in any given session. If your class has a vocabulary glossary wiki, this site will provide many new entry ideas! Go to the image gallery to browse images sorted by categories. The categories range from Architecture, Food, Animals, Insects, Plants and more. Right click to save images or choose optional links for different resolution sizes. In addition to the image gallery, be sure to check out the slide presentation gallery including visually appealing PowerPoint presentations on many topics. From the Clip Art Gallery (with free clip art to use) there is also a link to Learn How to Draw Your Own Clip Art. These are FREE to use. However, be sure to read and understand the Terms of Use! Note: you must be 18 to use this site. So while this is an excellent site for teachers to find resources, this shouldn't be shared with students to use independently.

Scroll through the homepage to find activities divided into several categories, including Art, History, and Culture activities and collections, Science and Nature, Art, History activities and collections, and an Art Meets Science collection. Activities include webcams, interactive ebooks, and simulations. Many of the included materials are in Spanish; some activities require downloading from the AppStore from Google Play.

For example, one activity is called Journey Through an Exploded Star; share a link to this interactive with students to explore before introducing lessons on stars and supernovas. Use this site for an in-depth study of 19th century French painter Paul Gauguin. The focus of this interactive, on-line exhibition is his extraordinary work titled "Where Do We Come From? Where Are We? Where Are We Going," a masterpiece produced during the artist's time in Tahiti. Visitors can move a virtual magnifying glass over the work and click on 15 separate segments. Each segment is augmented by background text and audio interviews with art historians. This is a high-level site for serious analysis by mature students.
