This site, by the Lily Library of Indiana University, features the wry wit and artistic talents of America's best political cartoonists. Three distinct and turbulent periods in American history are represented: The Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. Especially notable are the political cartoons from election years 1860 and 1864. Challenge students to think about how these caricatures compare with those found in today's newspapers.
In the Classroom
Select the images that correspond to the unit being covered in your classroom. Print out the caricatures, laminate and bring to class. Seperate students into groups and have them all work on at least one of the images obtained from the class. Have students analyze and dissect the images to gauge the meaning, purpose and intent. This is an activity that does require some substance of background knowledge, so do this more towards the end of a unit as review.You must be registered and logged in to add items to your favorites.

Discover and watch publicly funded radio and television programs from America's past with the American Archive of Public Broadcasting. Built as a means to preserve public broadcast programs from the 1940's through the present, over 7000 programs are available for streaming with additions ongoing. In addition to streaming programs, this site also includes curated exhibits on topics of historical significance, such as Climate Change and Voices from the Southern Civil Rights Movement.
In the Classroom
Bookmark the American Archive of Public Broadcasting for use as primary source material for classroom lessons. Browse by topic or keywords to find videos to share on your interactive whiteboard or share a link on your class website for students to view at home. Enhance students' learning and have them use Fakebook, reviewed here, to create a "fake" page similar in style to Facebook about an important figure from America's recent past. There is so much to explore on this site, you will need to place limitations on it! Digital Collections of everything from clothing to chronology, turns of the century exhibits, in the classroom activities, curricula, New England architecture and tools, manuscripts from people who lived in the time-- this site is truly a museum on the web made student-friendly. The activities section is full of ways to involve students with real objects from history. Students can actually hear some of the artists and writers reading their own words -- which is remarkable. If you teach American literature or history or are interested in artifacts from the past, this is a great site. If you choose, you or your students can create a login and save to "my collection."
In the Classroom
Browse the collection for images and descriptions of specific artifacts. Explore themes like Shay's Rebellion, the lives of African-Americans in early rural New England, or the Civil War era in New England. Interactive activities allow you to look at Early American tools, examine artifacts using a 360 degree view or see what clothing was worn (down to the underwear!) by people of the time. If you plan to share objects as part of a lesson "collect" them in a personal collection so you can pull them up easily. Challenge secondary students to use the activity labeled "Create a chronology" to group artifacts from the collections to illustrate a concept, such as slavery, clothing, or background of an author, artist, or historical event. With younger students, use one or more of the activities on an interactive whiteboard or projector or design a simple scavenger hunt within YOUR collection of objects for students to find out about colonial life and times. If you turn them loose on the entire site, you will never get them back.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Animated Drawing is a nifty online tool that incorporates a four-step process to bring life to simple character drawings. Use the sample drawings to get an overview of the example images. Begin by following the initial checklist that provides guidelines for successful use, including giving a drawing of one character on a white, well-lit background. When ready, upload your photo and follow the prompts to resize, separate, and find the character joints. The final step offers choices to change the motions of your character to dancing, walking, jumping, or funny. Finally, use the share icon to download the image as an mp4 file, share it to social media sites, or copy a link to the page with your animated image.

This animated drawing tool engages students in learning using their creative expressions and artwork. Incorporating animated images on most sites is easier when using a GIF file instead of the provided MP4; use a file conversion tool such as EzGIF, reviewed here. In the Classroom
This resource would be fantastic as a lesson or as a class opener to get students thinking about a particular topic. It also would be helpful for relating classroom topics and content to real life events. Filter the appropriate videos for your students by embedding them in a on your own website or wiki so that students are not distracted. With older students, you can have them use this as a resource to embed video clips or links in presentations and projects for their own classes. Try sharing one of the How To videos with your students in science class, and then have them make their own how to five minute video to demonstrate a lab. This website is a fascinating blog of architecture from around the world. The pictures are amazing, especially to the non-architect. The blog details the location and the designer of each architectural project pictured. Pictures of structures can be shared with multiple online social sharing websites. The site can be searched by keyword on the far right or by category of structure. This site offers a wide variety of styles, locations, and more.
In the Classroom
Useful to a multitude of different classes, this website could be utilized in art class, technology education, geometry, applied math, and even vocational curriculum. In art class, this site could be shown on the interactive whiteboard and used as inspiration for drawing or modeling projects. In applied math and geometry class, students could build scale models of structures found on the blog and apply measurement skills. Gifted students with visual/spatial or architecture interests could use this site as inspiration for individual projects. Another angle for this website is to integrate it into marketing, business math, and technology education classes in a unit where students find inspiration from an online design, create a budget to build the project using online resources such as lumber and steel companies, and then build scaled models. The projects could even be integrated into the English classes by having students present their projects as a business proposal in class. Take a few minutes to explore the art of a continent, country, or time period you introduce through social studies or literature. Include this site on your teacher web page as you study these related topics to students and parents can access it outside of class even if you do not have enough time to devote a full lesson. The images are not very large, so viewing on individual computers or using a projector that has a zoom function would help you share with a class. Here's a nice resource for retrieving short bios and explanations of people and events in the history of art, music, and other cultural disciplines. While the write-ups aren't remarkable, the use of time lines and other graphical devices helps users understand the relationship of the selection to other events and issues. You'll need the Macromedia Flash/Shockwave player, available from the TeachersFirst Toolbox.

This website is perfect for teachers in need of holiday crafts. Under "Arts and Crafts" there is a section that lists holidays, and provides a wealth of information under each one. Pick a project, and share it on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Students will love the examples provided, and keeping the directions up will solve a lot of time for the teacher. The art history resources index page will lead you to thousands of historically oriented resources. This site includes links to visual arts, performing arts, antiques, literature, architecture, and film. An Arts Search engine is also included in the site. The student or teacher of Art History would find this site invaluable.
In the Classroom
What is great about this site is that all artists are first organized by popular movement/time period, and then ABC order. Use this site to show specific examples of work done by an artist one is studying in the classroom. For history teachers, this would be a good site to show how art reflects society. Select an art source that originates from the time period you are studying in class. Share the image with students on the interactive whiteboard or projector, and debate what you can learn from society based on this picture. For example, the image "Napoleon Bonaparte Visiting the Plague-Stricken in Jaffa" by Antoine-Jean Gros. From that image you can pull out that there was a plague, the differences in class, and the impact of war on French society. While it might sound lofty, the right image can show these kind of details and can show the broadened definition of what can constitute as a primary or secondary source.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

Share this site with art and history teachers to use for cross-curricular lessons and activities to enhance instruction. Use a bookmarking tool like Padlet, reviewed here, to collect and share ideas with students. For example, when teaching about 20th Century history, create a Padlet with a column that includes ideas from the 20th Century Photography collection, add a column with 20th Century fashion, and another column with links to music from the same time period. Use the information from your Padlet collection along with your current lessons to provide students with an overview of the culture of the time along with the historic information. As it moved into ancient and modern history, the site offers nicely written summaries of the relationships between art, culture, and the political and social developments in each culture.
