The Children's Television Network has created a delightful set of learning activities that strengthen skills in letter recognition, decoding, listening, problem-solving, and more. Led by the familiar cast of characters from Sesame Street, your youngest students will love to explore Elmo's World, the Game Room, and participate in interactive stories. The links include games, stories, art, music, mail, and Elmo's World. At the Games link you will find science activities about the weather, counting challenges, classification activities, musical fun, and numerous other educational activities. This site truly has something for all primary elementary classroom.

Photography can be both an art form and a form of scientific inquiry. Photos of People and Cultures can promote human understanding better than any written words. This site from National Geographic can serve both ends if used properly. Art teachers "focus" on tips and techniques and photography advice areas, while science/social studies teachers will easily locate a wide range of plant, animal, culture, and geography images. As always, the photos themselves are exquisite. You will need to sign up for the free newsletter (with email) to view the photos.

Share a photo of the day as an activator at the start of a lesson on your projector or interactive whiteboard (IWB). Allow a student of the day to select his/her photo of the day as a class inspiration. Share a photo as a visual writing prompt. Use tools on your IWB to discover and reveal design elements in the photos in art class. This site from the restored home offers a virtual tour, a kids' section with a word search, and some very basic information about the house. This one's worth a look for those interested in late 19th century architecture.
In the Classroom
Teachers wanting to introduce some of Twain's personal life before or after reading one of his books can do just that with this site. Share the site with students on the interactive whiteboard, watching the virtual tour or examining the exhibits. There are examples galore, along with information on terminology, reading folding instructions, and sources for origami patterns. If you're looking for an art activity that requires very little equipment, try this one.

Use this site as an supplement to the book "One Thousand Paper Cranes." After the students have completed the book, use some class time to allow students to create their own cranes in class. Introduce the site on the interactive whiteboard before allowing students to explore it further in cooperative learning groups. Once students have created a crane, encourage them to try more complicated shapes and figures! Discover the many works of Dante Gabriel Rossett - painter, designer, writer, and translator. On the menu at the top click exhibits and objects to find a varied list that categorizes Rossett's works: Double Works, Pictures, Poems, Prose, Translations, Books, Manuscripts, Correspondence, and Material Design. Scroll down the page to find biographical information about this man who some say was the most important and original artistic force in the second half of the nineteenth century in Great Britain.
In the Classroom
Introduce the exhibits and objects page with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard and have the students partner read the biographical information about Rossett. Have students take notes using Webnote, reviewed here; tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Next show students how to navigate the exhibits and objects page. Ask partners or small groups to choose one topic from the list of Pictures, Poems, etc. Then, in your flipped or blended classroom (or at a computer center), have students explore on their own, continuing to take online notes. Take this a step further and allow pairs or small groups of students to share what they learned with their peers using an interactive infographic like Canva, reviewed here. Elementary students can understand the basic concepts; middle and secondary students can use the demonstrations as a starting point for their own printmaking efforts. Outstanding work - but requires the Flash 5 player, a "must-have" plug-in which is available from the TeachersFirst Toolbox.
