This site from the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts is almost as good as a field trip. Stuffed with images, video clips, and text, it offers a presentation on Modernism that runs from the British arts and crafts movement in the 1880s through to American Art Deco of the 1940s. There are images, text, and video narration for each segment, providing a nice evolutionary tour. Use the pieces together or individually as supplemental material for art history, or as an adjunct to an American or European history class.
In the Classroom
Use this site on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start your study of modernism in the past two centuries. Use the site's images and virtual exhibits to showcase the movement being talked about to compliment your class lectures. Another useful item is that some of the exhibits have a quick video clip that can help introduce the idea to your class in a way that foreshadows the rest of your lecture. It's an art and architectural style, not a school building. This site from the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts offers a visual perspective on the art and architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright, Louis Sullivan, William Gray Purcell, and others. In addition to showing works of art, the site offers several interactive tours of Wright houses, many in the twin cities area. Art teachers will use this one as a great American design example. There is a lot of information on this site. The a few complementary images (not the main images) for each topic require Flash.

While most of this site deals with visiting Versailles, students will find sections dealing with the King's daily routine and the life of the French court in the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition, there are images of some of the more notable artwork, and of course, large sections available "seulement en Francais," which we hope will please the world language teachers. There's nothing like it elsewhere. There is an incredible amount of information to discover at this site by scrolling down the home page AND click on the Explore tab at the top of the home page. There are a few videos that are hosted on YouTube, if your district blocks YouTube they may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use the menus to explore the "hidden" content. Then divide the class into small groups based on their area of interest and have them research their topic. Challenge them to research other sources to learn even more about the palace and its inhabitants. This site offers a detailed biographical treatment of Escher's work in illustrating perceptual and spatial phenomena and illusions. The site will be useful both for art instruction and for math or science study. We were delighted to find illustrations large enough to show the intricacies of these images. Even younger students will respond to, "What's going on in this picture?" discussions of these images.

Students reading Twain's books may be surprised to know that he lived in Hartford, not along the Mississippi. This site from the restored home offers a virtual tour, a kids' section with a word search, and some very basic information about the house. This one's worth a look for those interested in late 19th century architecture.
In the Classroom
Teachers wanting to introduce some of Twain's personal life before or after reading one of his books can do just that with this site. Share the site with students on the interactive whiteboard, watching the virtual tour or examining the exhibits. Part of a far larger site, this section offers lots of instructions on the basics of origami, the Japanese art of paper folding. There are examples galore, along with information on terminology, reading folding instructions, and sources for origami patterns. If you're looking for an art activity that requires very little equipment, try this one.
In the Classroom
Use this site as an supplement to the book "One Thousand Paper Cranes." After the students have completed the book, use some class time to allow students to create their own cranes in class. Introduce the site on the interactive whiteboard before allowing students to explore it further in cooperative learning groups. Once students have created a crane, encourage them to try more complicated shapes and figures! Here you will learn about prominent women artists of the past and great women artists working today. On the top menu, click Art + Artists to find a Collection of works by women artists, search by artist or artwork, time periods, medium, and or topic. The rest of this page displays 225 artworks that, when clicked, give you information about the artwork and the artist. When you click Artists, you'll find photos and profiles of women artists. Search by time periods and or medium. This page displays photos of the artists, and there is an interactive button at the top where you can shuffle which artists are displayed. Teachers: From the top menu, you can also click Learn and then For Educators to find Art, Books, and Creativity (ABC) curriculum that uses artists' books to highlight natural connections between visual arts and language arts. Scroll down the page to find additional resources.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard (or projector). Take advantage of the free art lessons then allow students to explore on their own or in collaborative groups. Since many of the lessons include writing, enhance learning by having students create online posters individually or together as a class. Use a tool such as Web Poster Wizard, reviewed here, or PicLits, reviewed here, to display a photo of the artwork or artist and explain what they learned. This Japanese site offers a collection of classical Japanese artwork, suitable for study as part of an exposure to Japanese history. The interface isn't the greatest, and the images contain watermarks, but the site works fine as an example of the unique nature of Japanese artistic representations.
In the Classroom
Use these images in a picture walk around the classroom to introduce or review a unit on some aspect of Japanese culture. Select 10-15 images to be hung around the classroom, with students rotating between them every 30-60 seconds. Have students fill out quickly what they observe and infer about each image, with the intentions of connecting each image to an essential understanding about Japanese culture. In the Classroom
Use the images and videos in the exhibit for a visual discovery activity. Select 3-4 images, placing them on a slide-show presentation. Have students take notes on each of the images and videos, noting what they observe, infer and predict about each one. After the presentation, have a class discussion based around student notes. This would be great review activity before an assessment, allowing students to apply the knowledge just learned. Discover the many works of Dante Gabriel Rossett - painter, designer, writer, and translator. On the menu at the top click exhibits and objects to find a varied list that categorizes Rossett's works: Double Works, Pictures, Poems, Prose, Translations, Books, Manuscripts, Correspondence, and Material Design. Scroll down the page to find biographical information about this man who some say was the most important and original artistic force in the second half of the nineteenth century in Great Britain.
In the Classroom
Introduce the exhibits and objects page with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard and have the students partner read the biographical information about Rossett. Have students take notes using Webnote, reviewed here; tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Next show students how to navigate the exhibits and objects page. Ask partners or small groups to choose one topic from the list of Pictures, Poems, etc. Then, in your flipped or blended classroom (or at a computer center), have students explore on their own, continuing to take online notes. Take this a step further and allow pairs or small groups of students to share what they learned with their peers using an interactive infographic like Canva, reviewed here.
