This extensive source, designed especially for elementary and middle school students, provides excellent information about the ancient cultures of the Near East, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. An additional section explores 19th - 20th century sub-Saharan Africa. Images of museum artifacts from each region are liberally distributed throughout the site, along with some interactive maps, occasional videos, and games. The Teacher Resource section provides lesson plans (aligned to national standards), suggestions for integrating art into the social studies curriculum, and helpful tips on using the site.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the free lesson plans offered on this site! This site could also be used as a learning center or station during a unit on Ancient Civilizations. Because there is a lot of content, we recommend creating a guide or follow along for students to accompany the site. Art, Literature, U.S. History - Works by some of the greatest photographers of the 20th century are represented in this massive collection of powerful images documenting memorable events in American politics and culture. Project selected photos in class to introduce an event in history, inspire student photographers, or introduce a writing prompt. The sight is searchable and quite user-friendly. A fee is required to download images.
In the Classroom
Use the photos found in this site for writing prompts. Search within the site or browse the subjects offered to find one that corresponds to a unit being studied. A good example would be the images taken of the Great Depression. Pull up a select few of the images and prompt students to tell the story of what is happening in the image, the emotions seen, and what kind of impact this is meant to have of the viewer. An activity like this does require some background knowledge so this might better suited towards the end of a unit as review. This site contains almost everything you will need to teach an "Introduction to Ceramics and Pottery" class! Browse through the formal lesson plans, handouts, worksheets, review activities, quizzes and rubrics. They are all downloadable in Word format and can be easily edited and adapted to your particular classroom needs. PowerPoint presentations and links to works of ceramic artists are included along with an on-line gallery of student work. Take your students to the computer lab to review concepts, vocabulary, and techniques with the Web scavenger hunt, "clay" crossword puzzle, or pop quiz. Spice up a history class and generate discussion with cartoons taken from the Smithsonian Institution's American Art/Portrait Gallery Library Collection. Images, dating from 1862 to 1955, reflect the power and popularity of this medium throughout American history. Can be browsed by title, artist, or subject.
In the Classroom
Art and History teachers will love this online collection of comic drawings houses by the Smithsonian. In a class discussion of validity of sources select a few images that were created to reflect on society or satire it. (We recommend Hogarth's engravings if your class is mature enough) Share the images on the interactive whiteboard or projector with the class. Start a discussion as to what students think the meaning and purpose of the image is. Do a few as a class and have students complete the rest of the images on their own. Have students write up a few quick sentences on the remaining images. This site, by the Lily Library of Indiana University, features the wry wit and artistic talents of America's best political cartoonists. Three distinct and turbulent periods in American history are represented: The Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, and the Civil War. Especially notable are the political cartoons from election years 1860 and 1864. Challenge students to think about how these caricatures compare with those found in today's newspapers.
In the Classroom
Select the images that correspond to the unit being covered in your classroom. Print out the caricatures, laminate and bring to class. Seperate students into groups and have them all work on at least one of the images obtained from the class. Have students analyze and dissect the images to gauge the meaning, purpose and intent. As it moved into ancient and modern history, the site offers nicely written summaries of the relationships between art, culture, and the political and social developments in each culture. World cultures faculties will love this one.

The write ups provide a substantial amount of information, and the images would be really useful for students who are visual learners. This site offers a generous helping of images of Mary Cassatt's late 19th-century impressionist work. Cassatt was one of few Americans to paint in the impressionist style, making her even more interesting to American students. Large format images make this site especially useful as a teaching tool.
In the Classroom
Before introducing students to Cassatt's paintings, briefly go over the Themes of Impressionism page on the site Impressionism, reviewed here, using an interactive whiteboard or with a projector. Have students pay particular attention to the third paragraph about how Impressionism differs from previous works of art. Ask them what makes Cassatt's paintings Impressionistic. After students have viewed several of Cassatt's paintings, ask them what the themes of her paintings might be (women and children). Create a class Padlet, reviewed here, and enhance student learning by asking small groups to research Mary Cassatt and decide on the five most interesting facts about her life. Photography can be both an art form and a form of scientific inquiry. Photos of People and Cultures can promote human understanding better than any written words. This site from National Geographic can serve both ends if used properly. Art teachers "focus" on tips and techniques and photography advice areas, while science/social studies teachers will easily locate a wide range of plant, animal, culture, and geography images. As always, the photos themselves are exquisite. You will need to sign up for the free newsletter (with email) to view the photos.
In the Classroom
Share a photo of the day as an activator at the start of a lesson on your projector or interactive whiteboard (IWB). Allow a student of the day to select his/her photo of the day as a class inspiration. Share a photo as a visual writing prompt. Use tools on your IWB to discover and reveal design elements in the photos in art class. It could be used to discuss Native American culture both pre-colonialism and during Westward Expansion.
