Complete a free online registration and begin to explore an impressive collection of learning modules that address chemistry, general science, physics, math in science, process of science, earth science, and scientists and research. Many modules contain interactive animations, a glossary, related current events, practice exercises, and biographic information about scientists who worked with that particular concept. Members can personalize each module with comments, links, or notes.
In the Classroom
Include this site to supplement your current grade 6-12 science curriculum. Use the resources to differentiate instruction for gifted students in lower grades or as remediation for struggling students in older grades. Use the student materials for differentiating instruction or as homework. Have students share their learning or understanding of a topic with video explanations using a tool like Flip, reviewed here. Flip is an augmentation tool for video responses to a question along with comments from peers. Transform technology use in your classroom and take student learning a step further by asking them to create and share their own multimeda presentation along with suggestions for learning about their topic of interest. Astronomical history is about to happen! On June 8, 2004 the planet Venus will cross the face of the sun, an event that has not occurred since 1882. Tune into this site to view a live Internet webcast of the transit and an interactive timeline detailing Venus transits throughout history (only six have occurred since the invention of the telescope in the 1600s). Basic information on what a transit it, why it is important, and how to see it is also provided. Some areas of this resource require Flash, however there is plenty of important information to learn from that doesn't.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the free lesson plans and activities offered within this site in the Teachers Guide! The site can be used for both history and science classrooms. Historians will appreciate the informative timelines and introspective look back, while the content itself is clearly science oriented. The "Cosmic Q's and A's" link uses text and video to explain what actually goes on in space. Browse through a collection of on-line, interactive games including "Moon Pong" and "Crazy Asteroid," listen to Monty Python's "Galaxy Song" (it IS educational!), and try out some of the experiments patterned after those performed on space missions. This is fun and educational site that can add a unique dimension to a lesson on space exploration.

Click on the link to Week's Sky at a Glance to find out what you can expect to see on any given night. Helpful tips are offered on how to observe space phenomena like auroras, asteroids, and star clusters. An on-line gallery provides amazing images from ground-based and space-based observatories. Encourage older students to explore the site independently in the computer lab. Elementary teachers may want to consider projecting the site in class and guiding students through selected topics.

Find out the exact dates when spring, summer, fall, and winter arrive, and discover if there really is a connection between equinoxes and eggs. The clear and detailed discussions of astronomical events provide an outstanding on-line reference or refresher for teachers and high school students, but the information is a bit technical and lofty for independent use by younger students.

Take an express tour or select the specific section of the solar system you wish to investigate. The site contains an astounding amount of information that is well organized and ranges from the basic to the complex. Text images, movies, and audio clips make this an entertaining as well instructive site. Use as a teacher refresher or as a comprehensive source for student research. Because of the sheer volume of information, make sure you design a basic Web hunt to guide younger students.

As students learn about different star formations, engage and enhance their learning by inviting them to create infographics using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here, to describe and share facts about their research. This site contains breathtaking, up-to-date satellite images of our planet, and interactive experiments that can be done in the classroom to illustrate how NASA uses Terra's remote sensing to understand how and why the Earth changes. Comprehensive and extensive information on the earth's atmosphere, oceans, land, life, heat and energy is provided. Because the site is updated daily, it can serve as a continually evolving visual aid for earth science classes.

Use this site in a cooperative learning activity, having students research a specific aspect of the site. Have students create a multimedia presentation using PowerPoint Online, reviewed here, displaying what they have learned. This site allows users to narrate a picture. Turn a unit on space into something unforgettable with this amazing site that explores infrared astronomy and brings it back to earth. Start by learning how to navigate within the site by clicking on the "help" tool. (It's quite useful for first-time visitors!) Then start exploring the offerings that include cosmic games, galleries of outstanding infrared educational videos and images, classroom activities, and an "ask an astronomer" link. An infrared tutorial provides excellent background information about infrared waves. Students can visit the Infrared Zoo to literally "see" the difference between warm and cold-blooded animals, find out if people glow in the dark, participate in a variety of interactive on-line activities, and learn about the connection between infrared waves and astronomy.
