NASA's Apollo program site offers a one-stop collection of resources about the American manned moon landing program. Users can select mission-by -mission accounts of the program's progress, with lots of photos and text on each mission. Because this site links to a variety of archival NASA content, the presentation can be very uneven. If you're a space buff, though, this one's a gold mine.
In the Classroom
Use this site as an in-class activity during a unit on modern space exploration. Introduce this site on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector before allowing cooperative learning groups to explore it independently. To show what they have learned from this site, challenge students to create an online graphic to share using Visme, reviewed here. NASA's Mars Participate page for kids offers lots of interactive exploration options and an interactive Mars viewer. Teachers will also find links to more extensive NASA classroom resources on Mars and plans for further explorations. NASA's web resources are huge, and finding suitable materials can sometimes require some experimenting. This site will certainly interest elementary-level explorers.
In the Classroom
You may want to introduce this site using the subject Space Place for Kids at the bottom of the page. Use your interactive whiteboard or projector and show them the All About Mars and the different Mars Rovers (robots). Bookmark the site on classroom computers (or in a lab) to allow students to explore the Adventure Game to Mars. Choose from topics and activities on this site to use in class or at computer centers. Replace paper journals and enhance classroom technology use by asking students to reflect on their learning in blog entries using Penzu, reviewed here. This site from the PBS Nova series chronicles Galileo's life, experiments, and scientific accomplishments. Users will find a detailed time line, articles about Galileo's accomplishments, and a nice series of interactive "experiments" illustrating his fundamental discoveries. Great site for the study of astronomy, inventors, or the Renaissance. Though some resources require Flash, there is a lot to earn from the features that don't.

Here's a nifty tool that calculates the measurements you'll need for an exact scale model of the solar system. Just enter the size of the Sun and the page calculates everything else. Because of the vast size differences involved, it may be difficult to create a model in a small space, but just comparing the numbers can be instructive.

NASA's real-time data site lets you see where and when you can spot the space station with the naked eye. Find "View From the ISS" and click "more photos" under that to explore more images taken from the space station. You will need to click on the icon for the image to see a larger version with an explanation.
In the Classroom
Before Introducing this sight, look through the photos and choose several that lend themselves to further student exploration, i.e. "cubesats." Then, introduce the site to your class as a whole with your projection system. Show student pairs the images to look at and then have them research more about the topic. Have students take notes on the material and write down questions they still have and topics that confuse them. Use Webnote, reviewed here; tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Once students have gathered all their information, images, and videos challenge pairs to create a digital book using Book Creator, reviewed here. This is an updated version of a site on the stars and galaxies that's been around for a while. The presentation is keyed to applicable national and state standards (primarily Virginia and Maryland). The presentations include an unusually complete set of lessons in astronomy and mathematics. For younger students, find animated videos and downloadable coloring books.The videos reside on YouTube. If your district blocks Youtube, they may not be viewable.

Introduce the universe and its galaxies with an interactive whiteboard or projector. Use the detailed astronomy and math lessons for students who have finished assignments and for gifted students.

This is a nicely indexed, searchable collection of NASA photos whose topics range from aeronautics to space, the planets, and beyond. Most are copyright-free, since they were created for government use. While some image sizes are quite large, this could be a wonderful resource for creating web projects, student use, or other space and astronomy applications.
In the Classroom
Use the images on this site to create a visual discovery activity in your classroom, introducing the topic of Solar Flares, or another outer space related topic. Select 3-5 images from this site, choosing the most powerful and moving images. Placing the images on individual slides, allow students 1-2 minutes to observe each image. During that time period, students should be taking notes based on what they observe, predict and infer about each image. The more powerful and detailed the image is, the more information students can take out. After the class has observed all the chosen images, have a class discussion based on the notes students took. This site is the home page for the Hubble space telescope. In addition to a collection of fabulous photographs, the site offers descriptions of the Hubble's various missions (see the menu at the bottom of the page) and the information it has collected since an in-flight repair several years ago restored its "eyesight." Well worth a visit, especially for the images.

The site is by no means new, and it consists mostly of text. That said, the articles will retain the attention of an interested student.
