This site presents teachers with a searchable index of natural sciences resources contained within the museum's site. Scroll down the page and click Resources for Learning. You can browse the web-sites, activities, and experiments by sub-topic, grade level, or resource type. Current subtopics include anthropology, astronomy, biology, earth science, and paleontology. Special collection exhibits present theme-based activities that cover additional topics and change occasionally. Be sure to check out the the Past Exhibitions for topics such as Biodiversity, Antarctica, and deep sea explorations, and much more. This is a great site for sorting out all the wonderful resources the museum has to offer. There are over 1,000 resources currently available on countless subjects.

In the Classroom
There are lesson ideas, one of which is to create a Jet Engine magazine. Instead of creating a traditional paper magazine, why not use technology? Try using reviewed here. Another is to create and interactive timeline for the history of flight. Here's a site that elementary teachers will like because of its great images, and secondary teachers will find useful for it's detailed explanations of the planets in the solar system. Users with high-speed connections can also view animations of many of the planets. You can also read some of the journals about Apollo 13 that gave a factual basis to the popular movie. Note: We're listing this one despite the fact that it launches annoying popup windows. Ignore them.

Try this one as a refresher for a unit on stars, constellations, or space. It's simple enough that even younger students should be able to use it.

Here's a site with dozens of images and histories of military and civilian aircraft. The site also includes histories of many aircraft used by U.S. presidents. Click Education from the top menu bar and find a section of lesson plans by scrolling down the page. View a list of the scavenger hunts on the right menu bar. Type videos in the search bar to find a list. This site could assist with research on aviation history or related topics.
In the Classroom
Click on "explore museum exhibits" from the right menu, then scroll down the page and choose from a list of exhibit areas for photos of each plane and weapon featured in the museum. Aerospace teachers can use this site for example photos of planes being studied in class, while history teachers can use those same photos in units concerning the evolution of transportation or warfare. This site truly is an interdisciplinary webpage, and can be used to supplement lectures in many classrooms. After introducing this site, allow student pairs, groups, or individuals to explore and find an area of interest. Then extend student learning by asking them to do some research to see what more they can learn about their area of interest and have them create a Google Drawings, reviewed here. There are dozens of examples drawn from as many ancient cultures, and all organized into themes that would have been essential to these civilizations. A set of lesson plans rounds out this intriguing unit.
In the Classroom
Save this site as a favorite and use it for an all-around resource for a unit on astronomy. Take advantage of the free lesson plans offered in addition to the sections that could be used as learning centers by themselves. NASA's Apollo program site offers a one-stop collection of resources about the American manned moon landing program. Users can select mission-by -mission accounts of the program's progress, with lots of photos and text on each mission. Because this site links to a variety of archival NASA content, the presentation can be very uneven. If you're a space buff, though, this one's a gold mine.
In the Classroom
Use this site as an in-class activity during a unit on modern space exploration. Introduce this site on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector before allowing cooperative learning groups to explore it independently. To show what they have learned from this site, challenge students to create an online graphic to share using Visme, reviewed here. Teachers will also find links to more extensive NASA classroom resources on Mars and plans for further explorations. NASA's web resources are huge, and finding suitable materials can sometimes require some experimenting. This site will certainly interest elementary-level explorers.
In the Classroom
You may want to introduce this site using the subject Space Place for Kids at the bottom of the page. Use your interactive whiteboard or projector and show them the All About Mars and the different Mars Rovers (robots). Bookmark the site on classroom computers (or in a lab) to allow students to explore the Adventure Game to Mars. Choose from topics and activities on this site to use in class or at computer centers. Replace paper journals and enhance classroom technology use by asking students to reflect on their learning in blog entries using Penzu, reviewed here. Users will find a detailed time line, articles about Galileo's accomplishments, and a nice series of interactive "experiments" illustrating his fundamental discoveries. Great site for the study of astronomy, inventors, or the Renaissance. Though some resources require Flash, there is a lot to earn from the features that don't.

Here's a nifty tool that calculates the measurements you'll need for an exact scale model of the solar system. Just enter the size of the Sun and the page calculates everything else. Because of the vast size differences involved, it may be difficult to create a model in a small space, but just comparing the numbers can be instructive.
