A Free, Interactive Course in Studio and Field Production-- This is a free course aimed at students interested in going into television production. It is exhaustive in its entirety and covers all aspects of the production from scripts to news reporting, editing, legal and ethical issues, etc. While it is geared to college students, upper level high school students would do well with some of this as well, especially those motivated by this subject matter. It also offers the entire course in Spanish and Portuguese.
Clicking on the "Readings and Information" menu will give you a "classroom related" menu that includes lesson plans and ideas. Scrolling down the main page, you can check on interactive test, crosswords, quizzes, video projects, and notes for both students and teachers.

This would be a valuable reference site for students interested in independent projects using video or for gifted enrichment projects, as well. Engineering Resources is a K-12 website that contains a multitude of information including lessons correlating to national and state standards. Search for activities and ideas by grade level and curriculum topic using the Search and Advanced Search buttons. Narrow choices provided in the curriculum section by filtering options to include lessons, activities, complete units, and more. Maker Challenges offer a variety of experiences for hands-on learning with topics including titles like A Doghouse Design Project and Create and Control a Popsicle Stick Finger Robot. Other site options allow you to search by educational standards and provide information and resources for teaching engineering to students in grades K-12.

Bookmark this site as a resource for finding STEM lessons and activities for all grade levels. Collaborate with your peers using a bookmarking tool like Papaly, reviewed here, to share all of your resources. Papaly offers you the ability to add notes to shared resources making it easy to discuss and add comments to items shared. Instead of having students write journal entries during science or maker lab activities, enhance student learning by using a video response tool like Flip, reviewed here, to have students respond to essential questions and comment on their peers' observations. As a culminating activity to a unit, ask students to create an explainer video answering essential questions to the unit topic. While most of the content appears elementary, there is information on food science careers and some higher level informaiton under Kids, Teens, and Educators.

Part of a larger Canadian site designed to help secondary school students make career and educational decisions, this section is focused on career choice. There are a number of nice personality and abilities quizzes that offer career guidance. Some of the questionnaires are printable worksheets (requiring Acrobat Reader), and some are on-line and generate feedback automatically. One of the instruments generates a Myers-Briggs style personality type.
In the Classroom
College and career planning cause significant angst among high school students. While none of what is posted on the site will tell students what they ought to do or where they ought to go, they will certainly provide some good insight and can help open a dialogue about these important choices. These activities should not be limited to the guidance counselors, but can be used in other classroom contexts with high school students. Be sure to provide this link on your class website for families to explore together.

The a la carte lesson format makes it easy to use lessons individually or as a complete oral health unit. Animations and games/puzzle section are geared for the younger grades. The appropriate age levels for each of the sections are clearly labeled. There are also sections on dental careers.

ScienceBuddies offers a large variety of science resources including science fair projects and free STEM lessons. From the top menu bar, select Science Fair Project to find a Topic Selection Wizard. This tool uses a short questionnaire to guide students to recommended projects based on length of time needed to work on the project, grade level, and topic for research. Be sure to also visit the teachers' portion of the site to find STEM lesson plans for all grade levels, science fair tools, engineering design information, and much more.
In the Classroom
Be sure to bookmark this site as a useful resource for any science topic. Take advantage of the free lessons aligned to Next Generation Science Standards to add to your current content. Replace paper and enhance classroom technology use with an online bulletin board like Lino, reviewed here, throughout your science unit to record student questions, ideas, and ongoing discussions. The reality of real-life debt is encountered as students compute the amount that must be repaid each year for the life of the loan and check out starting salaries of target careers. A discussion component asks students to critique the model and discuss other factors that should be taken into consideration. This is a thought-provoking, authentic application of math skills

We have yet to find a definitive career planning web site, but this offering from the US Departments of Labor and Education does a nice job of helping students sort out career options by both industry and education level. There's also a listing of which industries are growing most rapidly. While the site include many professions requiring a 4-year degree, job titles like engineer, physician, and attorney that require the most training are curiously absent.

National Runaway Safeline's tagline is "Keeping America's runaway, homeless, and at-risk youth safe and off the streets." Find important information for students, parents, counselors, and anyone else who works with young people who have run away (or might be thinking about doing so) and their families. In addition to location and confidential contact services, the site offers a wealth of resources for both families and young people. For teachers and counselors, there is an evidenced-based, interactive, 14-module curriculum "intended to educate young people about alternatives to running away as well as to build life skills... "Runaways are a quiet problem whose dimensions are far more significant than many realize. The site includes resources for homelessness, as well.
