Using a venn digram, have students compare the audiences of both papers, as well as framing issues, coverage, and popularity by numbers. Use an online tool such as the 2 and 3 Circle Interactive Venn Diagrams, reviewed here. In the Classroom
Use the articles on this site as writing prompts for students at the end of a unit or lesson on current economic measures being debated by Congress. Many of the articles span content crossing US borders, and some are controversial enough that it could stir up a myriad of student responses. Allow students to reflect in written essays or in journal writings to be turned in afterwards. The Southern Poverty Law Center is a large, multifaceted organization working for racial justice in the south and beyond. The site uses a three-pronged approach to dealing with racial and social injustice. The three methods include monitoring hate groups and extremists, using the court system to advance reform, and education provided through it's Learning for Justice program.
In the Classroom
Take advantage of the information on the site to include when teaching lessons about equality, racism, and social injustice. Learn more about the classroom resources offered through Learning for Justice, reviewed here. Include selections from the Features and Stories portion of the site as part of any integrated unit. Consider using a learning management system like Actively Learn, reviewed here, to include videos and additional text sources as part of your unit. Actively Learn also includes resources that provide feedback on student learning. Extend learning by asking students to gather data and share information through various digital tools including infographics and digital storytelling resources. Created in cooperation with the Bank Street College of Education, these lessons could be used as a way to link specific class topics to current events.
