Probably the coolest part of this website is entitled "observing," which provides helpful calendars, explanations and images of solar events that are happening soon locally. Refer to this site for upcoming solar phenomena, and encourage students to go out and observe on their own. If there are events in the area, assign students to observe and create a report based on what they saw! If students are able to gather images of the event, we recommend a tool like PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. Sharks! - National Geographic

Make a shortcut to this site on your desktop and use it as a center. Allow students to review the site, making sure to include headphones for the audio portions. There are a lot of random, but interesting, facts about sharks on this site that will maintain students interest. Have students decide what facts were the most interesting, and use their comments to spur a class discussion comparing sharks to other mammals the class has studied. A useful way to do this would be to use a venn diagram tool on the interactive whiteboard or projector, allowing all students to participate at once. Share this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector as an introduction to a unit on bats. This site is excellent for explaining bats' ecological impacts in an attempt to show the positive side of having them in one's environment. Divide students into cooperative learning groups to explore the site, and then discuss what each group thought was the most important way that bats help their environments. A great way to do this is to have students create an online infographic to share using Visme, reviewed here. There is a lot to explore here. You could start with the home page and the many articles listed there. Have small groups divide up the articles to read and investigate. Then have students with the same article meet together to become the expert on that topic (in cooperative learning, this is known as Jigsaw). Have each student in the Jigsaw group create an Awesome ScreenShot, reviewed here, where they can make digital notes with lines, text, or shapes. Though there are a wide array of articles, some capture and illustrate arguments over the debate of stem cell research, Pluto's classification, and climate change. At the end of a unit, open one of these articles and use the real-world information provided to spark a classroom debate. Students can use the knowledge they have gained, in addition to seeing its practical application.
