This helpful collection of classic movie clips grants limited English speakers access to unusual or idiomatic phrases said in popular movies. For example, in Guess Who's Coming to Dinner the phrase "break it gently" is explored, then students are give two choices to choose from for the meaning and then the answer comes on. The clip includes not only the idiomatic phrase, but also explanations of the cultural and historical background of the movie. This is an excellent way for students to learn some of the peculiar phrases in our English language in an enjoyable way!
In the Classroom
Teachers planning to show a classic film in class should check this site for information to help their ESL students better understand the film. You can also use this site to help with literature that has been made into a film. A great source of primary documents covering many topics of interest to grade school children including the real stories some of the people killed on Sept. 11. Although this is usually a pay site ($9.95/yr), free membership is available for educators, schools, and libraries. Each feature article is divided into "Story Chapter Links" and highlighted vocabulary clicks to photographs, maps, artifacts, documents, audio-visual clips, and articles with more information about the word. Topics offered include history, culture, literature, disasters, and media. You can find passages on topics related to almost any student's interests and use the resources to teacher reading skills.
In December, 2006, Awesome Stories announced free accounts for individuals, as well, but for a "limited time." If you would like your students to be abe to use it at home, consider setting up accounts for students, as well, while they are free.
In the Classroom
This is a great jumping off point for beginning researchers. You will find a wonderful compilation of photographs and other realia about the topics. Teach comprehension skills by using the first four chapters and asking students to predict or write aht they think would come next. Bring up the stories on an interactive whiteboard to highlight important terms and access the links that help students build connections to content. Based on the classic ESL textbook for pronunciation, this site offers pronunciation practice, illustrations of mouth and tongue placement for formation of English sounds as well as written explanations of the placement, activities, handouts, and tips for teachers concerned with correcting pronunciation. SOE uses Quick Time for video clips of the pronunciation of all basic sounds. A bonus feature is that this site includes many printable handouts, pronunciation guides, and games.

This Google feature allows international or ESL/ELL students to search for specifically designated pages (i.e., newspapers) in their own languages (i.e., French or Swahili) produced in specific countries (Ivory Coast or Kenya). Options include setting the interface to any language, getting on-the-spot translation, and also viewing the home country Google interface (i.e., www.google.cg - Republique du Congo) without having to import language scripts for the computer.
In the Classroom
Could be used as an exciting tool in the foreign language classroom! You may have to talk to your network adiministrator on filtered school district networks, if they have blocked translation tools to prevent students from "doing" assignments via these tools. For teachers, this site also provides reverse translation in case students repeatedly say words you wish you could understand. NOte: some districts may block access to this site so foreign language students do not cheat on homework assignments. This site offers a new comprehensive lesson plan about breaking news every three days or so. The site is rich with pre-reading and pre-listening activities, oral and written comprehension exercises, assignments, and best of all, the option of selecting the easy or more difficult session and accompanying activities. There are seven levels from which to chooseand use for differention.
In the Classroom
All news stories are offered in multiple forms: auditory (can be downloaded as a podcast or played on your computer, equipped with speakers), word document, pdf, and on the web page itself. The language used is simple, and the stories are read more slowly than the average radio broadcast. If you have high speed internet, you can also use the streaming option.

It also features an audio broadcast of a simplified news release backed up with archives (Click on links below Listening). Also available is a multilingual translating dictionary and access to three top search engines.
In the Classroom
Use this to beef up vocabulary, to explore culture through idioms and proverbs, and for listening and discussion practice in response to news reports. Great to fill in 5 - 10 minutes at the beginning or end of classes! For the regular classroom teacher, this may provide an alternate way for ESL students to "study" current events. Be sure to mark it in Favorites on your classroom computer for these students to access (or place a shortcut on the desktop). Are you producing a play that is in need of some accented English speech, or do you teach dialogue? This website offers accents/speech patterns from all over the world. In the "browse" section, you are able to click on an area of the world and hear a paragraph spoken from a native of that country,state, or region. The same paragraph is spoken in each example. The paragraph contains all of the needed vowel/consonant combinations, so that an interested student could easily compare and match a needed sound. You, too, can submit your own English accent recording to this site. It is a perfect site for those who desire some authenticity when it comes to learning about how different cultures speak the English language. Over 553 samples have been recorded for the site, and you can add one of your own. This site requires the Quicktime plug-in. Get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page
