As teachers, we need to provide effective instructional support for the increasing number of multilingual learners in our classrooms. Free edtech tools used in concert with best-practice language acquisition strategies can increase student achievement while providing an engaging, accessible, and supportive learning environment. In this session, we'll explore tech tools and activities that foster independent learning and facilitate vocabulary building, writing, comprehension, reading fluency, and access to curricular content. Join us to learn how to integrate technology to effectively serve linguistically diverse learners. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Identify language acquisition strategies that support multilingual learners in your classroom; 2. Explore tech tools that foster independent learning; and 3. Plan for the use of these strategies to support multilingual learners. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

Teaching Children Philosophy offers a large list of favorite children's books to use when discussing philosophical ideas with students. Choose from the alphabetical book list or select from topics including ethics, the mind, and more. Each book's suggestions include a summary of the plot, discussion guidelines, and philosophical discussion questions.
In the Classroom
Although created using children's books, this site is perfect for introducing philosophical discussions to students of any age. Choose two books that represent different sides of an issue to share with your class. Create a mind map including different ideas represented within topics using a tool such as Mindmeister, reviewed here. Then have students create an annotated image demonstrating their viewpoint including text boxes and related links using a tool such as Google Drawings, reviewed here. Lessonstream offers 70+ English lessons originally intended for ELL/ESL learners. They are divided by ability levels, listed according to topic, language aim, learner type, and lesson time. Each lesson includes images or a video, preparation tasks, text prompts and then the lesson plan. Many include additional printouts to supplement the lesson. Explore the site in several ways: browse all lessons page by page, time needed for lesson, learner type, main activity, language aim, or materials. Download lessons using the PDF link provided with each lesson. "Pinned" images provide age level information, activity type, and language skill addressed for each activity. Most lessons are aimed at middle school learners and above. However, there are several for younger students and worth taking a look if you teach younger grades.

Resources can enrich, or even give further explanation to current topics of study. There are also activities about doctor visits, music, exploring around the house, daily health routines, riding the trolley through the neighborhood and more. The collection of videos has many different segments from the television series. Don't miss the printables.
In the Classroom
Use this at a center, or a way to start difficult conversations about feelings or situations. Share the interactives or videos on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Use the printables for students to create their own adventures for Daniel Tiger. Have your class create an adventure for Daniel Tiger. Put the stories into a class book. Take this idea to a new level, and create your own "neighborhood" in your class. Each student can add their own experiences with podcasts, videos, or writing. Have students create podcasts using a site such as Spreaker, reviewed here.

The Mathematics Enhancement Programme is a comprehensive resource full of free math curriculum resources for all grade levels. Materials include lesson plans, practice materials, printable number lines and cards, and student activity sheets. Click any key stage level to download an entire year's worth of course materials. In addition to printed materials, interactive tutorials (offered in a fairly basic-looking computer style) offer lessons and remediation for many math topics. The site was created in the UK, so some of the pronunciations and spellings may differ from those in American English (as well as the type of currency used for money problems). The site dates back a ways, so the actual "look" is a bit old fashioned.
In the Classroom
Bookmark and save this site for supplemental math resources throughout the year. Explore the lesson plans to use in your own classroom. Create a link to interactive tutorials on your website or classroom computers for student use. Share the excellent Spanish language math materials with your school's ESL/ELL teacher.

PBS Kids has a variety of reading games that are entertaining and educational for kids of all ages. The games help kids improve their reading skills, including phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students will be engaged in practicing essential reading skills with familiar characters from PBS Kids. The main reading games page may be updated or changed frequently, so bookmark your class favorites!
In the Classroom
Teachers can project the games onto a screen and have the class play together. Playing a game to introduce a concept engages kids in reading and reinforces basic reading skills. Working in small groups or pairs encourages collaboration, communication, and peer learning. Students can help each other with challenging tasks. Giving students time to play the games independently is an excellent way to practice reading at their own pace and work on specific skills they need help with. Join Martha (the dog) from the book and animated children's series, Martha Speaks. This interactive website focuses on vocabulary and word usage. The site includes interactives, printables, videos, and "Martha's Stories" for students to explore. Make newspapers, dog tags, vocabulary word pictures, and more. Vocabulary introduced are not necessarily sight words, yet specialized content area words. Apply and learn new vocabulary in a wide variety of interactive ways. Some game features require Shockwave and/or a webcam. Don't worry. It does not keep your picture.
In the Classroom
Intrigue your students to follow the dog, Martha, into new vocabulary learning. Share a book (or video of the show) with your students before introducing this site. "AI is for Everyone, Everywhere" is a teacher research guide on integrating artificial intelligence into education. The research handbook includes webinars and The Hands-On AI Projects for the Classroom guide are from ISTE and GM. Guides contain innovative, student-driven projects that meet subject area standards while teaching students the foundations of AI and how it impacts our society. This research guide includes an extensive, downloadable document with in-depth projects and lesson plans to teach students about artificial intelligence. Separate guides are available for elementary, secondary, electives, computer science, and ethics and are available in multiple languages, including; English, Spanish, and Arabic. Look at the projects by scrolling down the page and finding the section that says 1. Select a group, 2. Select a Language. Then you download the PDF Guide.

In the Classroom
Read over the guide deciding which parts need to be shared with the class. Introduce the guide and the projects to students on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector through the part "activate prior knowledge." Then pair more computer savvy students with novice computer users or weak readers with stronger readers as needed. Next, the student-driven approach to the projects includes "Take a Closer Look" activities are scaffolded, guided learning activities that connect subject-area content and artificial intelligence concepts. "Culminating Performances" are meaningful performance tasks that challenge students to synthesize their learning and reflect on what they have learned. Once students have finished the first project, consider setting up computer stations for students to try out the different AI projects.
