The primary purpose of this site is to offer information and techniques for quilters; however, they also offer 3 lesson plans that can be used in elementary, middle, or high school classrooms. The elementary lesson focuses on learning fractions through dividing up quilt squares including basic and advanced activities. The middle school lesson focuses on proportions. The high school activity is based upon polynomials. These would be fun activities for students to apply these math concepts through hands-on activities.
In the Classroom
During Black History month or when learning about western expansion or colonial days, students may enjoy making quilts from fabric or paper and learning about the different patterns used in quilt making. Introduce this activity and have students label the different fractional amounts in the quilt squares. Practice adding fractions by writing the equations generated by making different quilt squares. Teach volume, area and perimeter while also creating useful gift boxes for holiday presents. This site will provide opportunities for visual spatial learners to learn mathematical principles about 2D and 3D figures, lines, angles, and planes. Download and print out the free templates onto vellum or card stock paper. Take advantage of the site's online directions and allow students to work on it in pairs so they can easily assist each other. Save this site in your favorites on classroom computers so students can practice paper folding independently. As a clever review activity for almost any curriculum topic, have students make and decorate a box, such as "secrets of the solar system" or "favorite vocabulary words" box, filling it with slips of paper with terms to define or explain. Their purpose is to provide discussion and communication opportunities for all interested in math through mailing lists, discussion areas, and ask an expert areas. The Math Tools area is a vast library of technology tools, lessons, activities, and other support materials for teaching and learning mathematics. Although it may be a little overwhelming; there are wonderful tours to help you get started in this area. Another frequently visited area is the Teacher Exchange which offers lessons from preK through College submitted by fellow math teachers sorted by math strands. Be sure to check out some of the free workshops offered to help navigate different portions of the site. The site contains too many resources to name them all here, so be sure to take some time to explore and then revisit to find more information. One valuable resource offered is the weekly newsletter - just sign up and receive site updates and more in your digital mailbox weekly.

This site offers all information on World Maths Day, usually held in March. World Maths Day has taken place each year since 2007. They plan to add science challenges. Students play at home and at school against other students around the world in live games of mental arithmetic. Each game lasts for 60 seconds and students can play up to 100 games, earning points for their personal tally. The students who answer the most questions correctly appear on the Hall of Fame. There are 5 different levels of play, 20 games on each level. All participants receive a digital certificate of achievement. Site resources include teacher and student quick launches, technical guides, and printable posters for the classroom.

Enroll your classroom and enjoy a fun Math Day by allowing students to participate in the Math games for a portion of their class time. The calculator has a dropdown box to display the recent history of calculations which may be useful to retrieve recent problems. After clicking the link, copy and paste the code to embed the calculator horizontally, vertically, or with a minimal (just standard calculator) display.

Use this hip site to reinforce the need for algebra in today's world. Beyond architecture, view videos that explain how musicians, fashion designers, and video game designers use algebra in their work. View videos on the site or embed into a blog, wiki, or other site for your students. Though the Challenges use Flash, there is certainly a lot more to learn at this entertaining site. Teachers will find a video introduction on using the site with classes as well as lesson plans either as a word document or Adobe PDF format.

Share the catchy introduction video on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Use the Introduction to raise awareness of using math in careers and the real world. Use the lesson plans provided on the site as a whole class activity or with groups of students. Have students create a podcast using a tool such as podOmatic, (explained here), blog post, or other multimedia presentation of their use of Algebra to solve the problem. Have students carefully view their world and find problems or phenomena where math can answer the question.

Most games offer fun titles for students such as Fling the Teacher and Walk the Plank. Also offered on the site is a large bank of downloadable worksheets sorted by grade level. Worksheets are in PDF format. Video explanations are also offered for many math skills such as number skills, time, and measurement. Searches can be made by specific format such as video, games or downloads or by grade level. This site does include simple advertisements. Scroll down to get past them and find the actual games.

Each lesson is offered in a slide format beginning with an introduction to the activity, followed by questions to answer. Upon answering questions, feedback is provided. If the answer was incorrect, an explanation of the correct solution is provided. The site also provides several math games practicing fractions, ratio, data, and percent. Spanish and ESL/ELL teachers will want to note that there is a small sample of lessons available in Spanish on the site. Many of the topics are also applicable in Family and Consumer Science or business classes, as well.

MathDoku is a mathematical and logical puzzle based on "KenKen" and loosely similar to sudoku. Tricks include Calendar Math which gives a formula for finding the day of the week someone was born based on their birth date, 73 which gives a formula for always finding an answer of 73 to a problem, and Two Too which provides a simple formula for always finding an answer of two after choosing any number. There is a wide variety of directions for creating animals, creatures, food, holiday gifts, and accessories. The site also includes printable origami paper, links to other origami sites and new designs each month. There are some minor advertisements at this site.

Learn about the culture of Japan, geometry, and art with Origami. Use these video tutorials to create clever objects for holiday gifts while teaching mathematical principals about 2D and 3D figures, line, area, perimeter, and planes. Demonstrate how to create an origami object by projecting the site's animated videos directions. Stop and pause the video as students follow along. Save this site in your favorites on classroom computers so students can practice paper folding independently. Afterward, discuss the benefits of oral, visual, or animated directions. This site provides hands-on math using a Mobius strip (or band). Though the site is "plain vanilla," this topic always fascinates students. Directions are included for creating the strips. A simple, mathematically important, and wonderfully entertaining two-dimensional object, also known as the Mobius strip, that has only one surface and one edge and is therefore of great interest in topology. It is used in classrooms to develop understanding of surfaces and create mystery. Two experiments build on each other.
In the Classroom
After "Experiment 1," show students the video for how the results should look. After you've completed "Experiment 2," you can take this activity a stip further by visiting Crayola's Mobius Magic. More information on Topology and Mobius bands can be found here. During the lessons, take digital pictures of the procedures for creating and working with the Mobius bands. This activity provides you with two fractions, a pair of shapes, and a number line. Each shape is connected to a point on the number line corresponding to one of the fractions. You can create the computer generated fractions by adding sections to the empty shaped and coloring in the appropriate portion of the shape to match the fraction. When both shapes are correctly divided and colored, a third box appears. You are asked to divide and color the new shape to create a new fraction that lies between the values of the original two. After all three boxes are correctly colored, the student must enter the value of the fraction which they created. Be sure to check out the link for instructors which provides a printable with exploration questions, links to standards, suggested classroom uses, and links to similar resources.
In the Classroom
Print the exploration questions for students to use with the activities on the site. Use on the interactive whiteboard or projector to compare fractional amounts and place fractions on a number line.
