This site has great simulations in Math that can be used with an Interactive Whiteboard. Math categories include "Algebra," "Data Handling," "Number," "Shape, Space, and Measure," and "General Maths." Specific topics include "Reading Scales," "Rotational Symmetry," "Shop Addition," "Prime Snakes," and "Number Cylinder." Information and ideas for use on each Interactive can be found both on the site and as an Adobe PDF download.
In the Classroom
Show difficult-to-understand concepts on the interactive whiteboard or projector. Use these Interactives by having students predict outcomes and then carry out the experiment, such as in rolling die to determine probabilities. Students can then apply the information to a new set of problems. Use many of the interactives as a class game. Though perfect for the whiteboard, they can also be used on individual computers or as a computer learning station.

This math site is a MUST SEE for teachers of all grade levels. Much of this site is designed for K-8 teachers, but there are a few activities for the high school grades. Although the site is mainly a drill and practice, it offers such an array of topics and levels that there is something for everyone here (and it is terrific for differentiating lessons in the classroom). Sample topics include roman numerals, Algebra II, pre-algebra, measurement, absolute value, early childhood math, telling time, money, place value, fractions, decimals, mixed operations, and more! And did we mention, each topic includes rich, colorful interactives for students to practice skills! Most topics also include options to specify content (for example, choosing to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division). fun activities for all levels!
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard, then allow students to explore on their own. This is a great site to use as a learning station or center. This site offers FREE interactive math tools: qualitative grapher, piecewise linear grapher, linear transformer, function analyzer, quadratic transformer, system solver, plopit, and proportioner. Originally the interactives required special software, but they now run directly from the web site without any special installation or download. The interactives all include a real-time connection between math concepts (graphical or symbolic) and the representations. The activities provide visual illustrations to enhance algebra class. They allow for accelerated learning. And you are even able to save images to share with classmates.
The "Qualitative Grapher" demonstrates the meaning of a function and see how it can be seen as something changing over time. The "Proportioner" highlights scale and proportion and allows you to compare image dimensions. All of the other individual activities highlight other upper level math skills. This site requires Java and Adobe Acrobat. You can get both from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

In addition to selecting games by math concept, use the grade level links to choose games appropriate for first through sixth grade. This website, funded by a grant from the U.S. Department of Education, provides an enormous collection of "web lessons" (interactives) for all grade levels. There are lessons in language arts, math, science, social studies, and health. There are too many lesson plans to count - and all are projector, laptop, or whiteboard-ready. Just to give you an idea of some of these unique lessons, some of the titles include "Where is Japan?", "Walrus World", "Piece of Pie", "Medians", "Fence Me In", and "Critter Craze". On the main page, a brief description is provided for each lesson plan. Click Teacher Solutions > Lesson Plans to search by subject or grade level.

If you want ready-to-go lessons guaranteed to work well on your interactive whiteboard, this collection is a winner. You simply open the activity on the whiteboard and have students tap and drag their way through as you talk with the class. The Origami Club makes the art of folding paper child's play. The animated video tutorials and printable directions take the guesswork out of making origami. There is a wide variety of directions for creating animals, creatures, food, holiday gifts, and accessories. The site also includes printable origami paper, links to other origami sites and new designs each month. There are some minor advertisements at this site.
In the Classroom
Learn about the culture of Japan, geometry, and art with Origami. Use these video tutorials to create clever objects for holiday gifts while teaching mathematical principals about 2D and 3D figures, line, area, perimeter, and planes. Demonstrate how to create an origami object by projecting the site's animated videos directions. Stop and pause the video as students follow along. Save this site in your favorites on classroom computers so students can practice paper folding independently. Afterward, discuss the benefits of oral, visual, or animated directions. Ask students to describe the folding process with geometric terms such as fractional parts, symmetry, faces, edges, rotations, lines, triangle, angles, and shapes. Consider having students use a variety of multimedia presentation platforms to publish their personal version of directions. Have students create multimedia presentations that add narration to each fold with Thinglink, reviewed here. Students can practice math skills independently (and in both English and Spanish) with this collection of challenging, interactive practice activities, organized by grade level and topic. Click Spanish version at the top for your ESL/ELL students to have access to the same valuable resources! The website says the activities are designed for students in grades K through eight. Topics vary greatly and include algebra, statistics, counting, comparing, decimals, basic operations, exponents, fractions, and many others. Nearly every math topic taught in elementary or middle school, will be found at this site. Once you click on the general topic area, be prepared for a HUGE list of specific choices to explore. Each math concept is explained in a simple paragraph and then students are presented with practice activities about the specific concept. The practice activities are timed.
Be aware there are several advertisements at this website (all appropriate). But considering this site is free (and full of ready to go math activities), the advertisements are worth the minor annoyance.

The activities are divided up into the following categories: Arithmetic, Math Games & Puzzles, Logic, Fractals & Chaos, Fallacies, Calculus, Combinatorial Games, Algebra, Visual Illusions, Computer Math Magic, Combinatorics, Geometry, Eye Opener Series, Social Science, Mathematical Droodles, and Analog Devices. Each category has numerous interactive activities included. The site is frequently updated. There are some small advertisements at the site. This site is simple to use and offers a wealth of options for many grade levels. The activities are not time-consuming and offer simple explanations with the applets.

As the name suggests, this website offers numerous math videos. The videos answer specific questions (sent in by students). General topics include numbers and their properties, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, percents, geometry, measurement, data, word problems, and advanced topics. The website currently features 20-30 videos. New ones are frequently added. Students and teachers are able to send in specific math questions, but the response time is currently "on delay." The videos are mainly audio with simple illustrations.
In the Classroom
The possibilities at this website abound. The website offers both audio and visual descriptions for each math topic, thus enabling you to reach your visual and audio learners. Use your interactive whiteboard or projector to share a specific topic with your students. Most are set-up as word problems that require reading, comprehension, math skills, and more. The "outline math problems" provide students with 3-5 choices. You simply click on the blank and the choices for the answers are provided. There are activities for primary grades (such as basic addition practice) as well as advanced activities for secondary grades (such as geometry concepts). Many of the activities require JAVA. This site features engaging movie scenes that involve Math problems. Beside each clip and title is an explanation of the Math concept in the clip. Most are secondary level, but a few are for lower grades. If you click on the TITLE of the movie, you will be lead to a site to purchase, rate, and/or view the movie in its entirety. To avoid this confusion, be sure to click on the link below the description.
In the Classroom
Use the links "Begin of Lectures in College teaching" and "The end of lectures in college teaching" to identify effective and ineffective teaching elements at all levels. Use these clips for anticipatory set or activators at the start of a lesson or introduction of a concept. Share the video clips on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Discuss the concepts as a class or have students work in cooperative learning groups. See if students can identify any other movie or television show that has used math concepts. Math train is a "kids teaching kids" math project created from Mr. Marcos (and his students) of Lincoln Middle School. Browse student created, teacher created, or captioned math videos easily found using the search function. Videos can be viewed without a login. Most videos focus on a very specific topic and are short in length. Use the url or the embed code to share the video and add comments. Teachers and students can join math train and upload videos to teach math concepts to others. Registration requires an email account. Check your district's acceptable use policy regarding student use of email addresses. This site requires Flash. You can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page. Note: the "we are upgrading" message does not prevent you from using the site!
In the Classroom
Use this site as a resource to teach students basic and more complex math problems. Use your interactive whiteboard or projector to share this site with your students. Students can also be assigned a similar project in the classroom for peer teaching and learning. Use a class website or wiki to show your student-created video or register on the Math train site to upload video in this education-specific environment. (Of course you will want to check your school policies on sharing student work online. You might even use the Record feature of your interactive whiteboard software, if your computer has the memory to handle it. Have students view a video and create problem sets for other students to solve. Students can identify potential real life problems and the math skill necessary to solve it. This is definitely a site that you will want to save in your favorites and visit often (they add new videos frequently).
