In the Classroom

Teachers will find these summaries useful for their comprehensive scope, which frequently includes historical and cultural background information. Much of the content is 5 or more years old, so these pages are best used for historical or background information.

At this site you will find a wealth of material about the culture of Spanish America. This includes color images, short videos, an interactive timeline, essays (Library), and a glossary. The Spanish American culture thrived from the 16th century to the early 19th century, and ran from California to Chile. This site can be viewed in English or Spanish. There are DVDs offered with primary documents, more images, etc., but these are not free. This review is for the free internet site only.

In the Classroom

You could share this site with your students on your interactive whiteboard or projector and at the same time create a timeline for the Spanish Americas using a tool such as Timeline Infographic Template, reviewed here. What a wonderful resource for higher level students during Hispanic Heritage Month!

There are several themes listed on the site and each theme starts with a video that is less than five minutes. You might want to put small groups of students in charge of a theme, and have them explore the site for what their theme is all about (be sure to go over the titles in the Library with them). Enhance learning by having the small groups use a tool such as Mindmeister, reviewed here, to create and share concept maps of the important ideas about their theme. They may want to use the images from the site, too, so be sure to remind your students that they must cite their source, and give credit to the people who created this site when they create a project on line.

Cliohistory.org is an educational organization that develops engaging online history projects designed to assist educators through documentaries, websites, and other media. Viewers learn about various American historical events through virtual history and photography exhibits. A few examples are: Votes for Women, Quilts As a Visual History, Native Americans: Our First Historians, among others. Some exhibits contain ready-made lesson plans, and videos for grades 3-12.

In the Classroom

Engage your students in learning about history with interactive maps, multimedia resources, and primary and secondary sources. All students, especially visual learners, will find these resources help them connect with historical events and figures more personally to make history feel more relevant and engaging. Enhance learning by having students create a timeline of historical events using Padlet, reviewed here. Use the exhibits as writing prompts to analyze historical information. Have students explore an exhibit as a resource for a research project, then create a multimedia presentation of their findings using Genially, reviewed here, where students will have a choice for their presentation format.

Voices of Democracy features curriculum units based on significant speeches throughout U.S. History. The units are designed for college-level instruction; however, they also contain lesson plans for teaching speech at middle and high school. Find speeches by time, theme, author, or speaker. Each unit includes a video of the address (when available), the transcript, an interpretive essay, and learning materials. Learning materials for middle and high school learners include correlation to national teaching standards, a suggested teaching timeline, discussion questions, and featured vocabulary. If your district blocks YouTube, then the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Include these significant speeches as part of speech class or during history lessons related to the speech's topic or speaker. Clip portions of any video using ytCropper, reviewed here, for students to use when focusing on presentation techniques or content of the speech. For a more in-depth look at any video clip or the entire speech, use Timelinely, reviewed here, to add images, maps, links, and more to any area on the video timeline. As a final project, ask students to record their own speeches or present one of the featured speeches on Padlet, reviewed here. Padlet includes many tools to extend student learning in addition to the video recording feature. Ask students to use Padlet's features such as the Brainstorming Board, AI Art, various graphic organizers, images, and more to enhance their speech presentation. Be inspired to love American History! Development citizenship and awareness by using this ten-part curriculum of short stories, speeches, and songs. The curriculum consists of three categories. The Meaning of America explores the American character and identity through the "close reading" of classical short stories such as "To Build a Fire" and "Man Without a Country." The American Calendar examines the purpose of the American holiday, proposing the celebrations help to unite us and attach us to our country. Songs for Free Men and Women scrutinizes national songs for meaning and how they emotionally attach us to our nation. All of this curriculum is inquiry based. It also offers suggested discussion questions, study guides, author biographies, and video discussions to model how higher-level-thinking conversations about each text should sound. What So Proudly We Hail uses primary texts, has rigor, is inquiry based, and has many essay topics and writing prompts aligned to the Common Core Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy in History/Social Studies. A few of the blog entries include helpful information about the Common Core standards.

In the Classroom

This comprehensive program can be a bit overwhelming at first look. You might want to pick just one, high interest short story lesson, perhaps Jack London's "To Build a Fire." This lesson and many others lends itself to small group discussion and work. The introduction makes observations and asks questions to encourage active reading and deep discussions that you may want to use as a class. Whether you and your students complete the lesson as a class or in small groups, you may want to use a program like Today's Meet reviewed here to enable all students to have a voice. If using small groups, have students post what the group decided are the answers on Today's Meet so everyone can see all answers. Where answers differ, have students go back into the reading and cite evidence to support their answer on Today's Meet for all to see. Teachers of gifted and music can choose selected ideas from this site, as well. A teaching team could make this site the focus of a year-long effort with so much material available. Upper elementary teachers and higher can make holidays and patriotic songs far more meaningful through close reading and class discussions

The White House Tapes takes a look at the secret tapes recorded by three American presidents and how each president used one on one politics to shape history. Listen to conversations recorded by John F. Kennedy, Richard M. Nixon, and Lyndon B. Johnson. Read an introduction to each president, then go in-depth to explore particular events such as the Vietnam Dilemna and Watergate. Include the tapes and transcripts as part of any unit involving the 1960's, Vietnam, presidents, and more. Have students use Fakebook, reviewed here, to create a "fake" page similar in style to Facebook about characters involved in the audio tapes.

In the Classroom

View this video together as a class as an introduction to lessons on Alexander Hamilton, the Constitution, or slavery. Flip your lessons and have students watch the video before class. Use the Discussion Questions from the site to challenge students to research other Founding Fathers. Have students or groups share what they know about Hamilton using Padlet, reviewed here. The Padlet application creates free online bulletin boards. Encourage students to research Alexander Hamilton's later life, then upload a photo they have encountered (with proper credit, of course) and add an explanation about what they learned using a tool such as Add Text, reviewed here.

This site accompanies an episode of the PBS series Frontline which examines the life of Lee Harvey Oswald, the presumed killer of John F. Kennedy. Because Oswald himself was assassinated before a full examination of the crime could be completed, mystery surrounds the man and his possible motivations for killing the President. Did he act alone? Here you will find a summary of the major conspiracy theories, a timeline of Oswald's life (including a psychiatric report from his teenage years), and an overview of the events surrounding the assassination. You can search YouTube and find Frontlines' video for free, if your district doesn't block YouTube.

In the Classroom

Students are often fascinated by conspiracy theories, and the mystery of whether Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone or was part of a larger plot to kill the President represents one of US history's most enduring. Certainly the site will be useful in a discussion of the event itself. However, it can be used more generally as a springboard for discussion of conspiracy theories themselves. See the lesson ideas in the Teachers Guide section. What evidence do we require to decide if something is true or not? Who can be trusted to tell the story of an emotional event? Is "seeing" always "believing"? How can resolve the fact that eyewitnesses do not all have the same recollection of the event? Have your gifted and highly able students do a special project investigating conspiracy theories in history and sharing them as a role play or video for the rest of the class.

Looking for videos and resources that peer into Global Issues? Start with this resource! Click the Video Bank to view resources by themes: conflict, power, human rights, social structures, migrations, economic systems, factors of production, or political systems. Also, view the video bank by location in the world. Videos in each theme are up to several minutes in length and are clips of larger videos. Click on the video of choice, to view the video on a larger screen, see the guiding questions, read the background essay and transcript, and find related links. Text can easily be printed using the print function along the bottom. Videos are easily downloaded, with directions for both PC and Mac users. View the country and region map along the left side along with the accompanying lesson plan. Additionally, click on Lesson Plans instead to display the following for each global issue: overview, learning objectives and standards, media components (with links), and materials. Be sure to note the Prep for Teachers along the bottom of each lesson plan.

In the Classroom

These resources and videos are extremely flexible for classroom use. Use the film clips for current events, and to also highlight events from the past. Use a video segment to get students thinking about past incidents, solutions, and whether today's environment has changed from that of the past. View a variety of clips from one theme and discuss events in the clip or use a writing assignment to provide time to process the events. Discuss in what ways these clips are similar and other societal, economic, and political factors that affected them. Use any of these videos to find any current events that are still dealing with the same issue today. Be sure to brainstorm how different people, in other areas of the world, would view these issues. Research these issues using resources from other areas of the world to see editorials and news clippings that are not American. Note: Use the country code after your search term or use this news search. Were there other people interviewed about any of these issues? Who are they and what did they say? Consider creating videos showcasing a variety of viewpoints using Typito, reviewed here. Besides the viewpoint of each video, what would be a common question that all videos within the theme have in common? How does the bubble of our American culture hamper our understanding of other people both here in the U.S. and abroad? Research the history and culture of the various areas to identify factors responsible for the themes portrayed by this resource.

WisdomMaps uses the power of MindMeister, reviewed here, to provide a collection of over 50 interactive learning map sets. Select any map from the list to open and explore concepts and information related to the activity. Key to the concept of WisdomMaps is the ability for you to view information through exploration of the different ideas and concepts offered. Topics include history and ethical topics from around the world and across different times.

In the Classroom

Share WisdomMaps with students as a blended learning activity by allowing students to explore a shared map before discussing ideas together as a class. Provide a collaborative Google Jamboard, reviewed here, and ask students to add sticky notes with information discovered through their exploration. Consider either creating columns for information found and another for questions that need further exploration. Use the WisdomMaps found on this site as a model for students to create maps using MindMeister, reviewed here, that correlate with your current classroom curriculum.

With Liberty and Justice for All is a special exhibit at the Henry Ford Museum in Michigan. The focus is on the American quest for equal rights, with a special emphasis on the Women's Suffrage Movement and the Civil Rights Movement. The site includes a video tour of the exhibit and lesson plans with standards for fourth through twelfth grade levels. The lesson plans presume a visit to the museum, but could be adapted fairly easily for groups who are unable to visit the museum itself.

In the Classroom

While the site is focused on preparing students for a visit to the Henry Ford Museum, the site provides good resources and lesson plans for the study of both the Women's Suffrage Movement and the Civil Rights Movement. The video tour of the exhibit also provides a "virtual field trip" experience.

The Library of Congress site on the women of the Civil Rights Movement shares stories and information about how these women helped fight for equal rights in America. You can read articles and see interviews of the many women who helped make significant changes. This website helps us learn more about the different ways women contributed to making history during the civil rights era.

In the Classroom

Have students work in six groups and assign each group one of the featured speakers from the site. Using the website, have them create a presentation using Google Slides, reviewed here. Then jigsaw the students and let them teach each other about what they learned. If you need a refresher for the cooperative learning technique Jigsaw, it's reviewed here. Have students watch the interviews on the website and have them make a comparison on what commonalities they heard. Have them create WordClouds, reviewed here to see what the speakers have in common.

The History.com page "Women Who Fought for the Vote" tells the story of how women in the U.S. fought to be allowed to vote. It talks about important women and significant moments in the women's voting rights movement, illustrating this through articles, pictures, and videos. This website is a great place to learn how women won the right to vote with the 19th Amendment.

In the Classroom

Use the videos on this site to introduce a unit on the suffrage movement. Use this site as part of a larger unit of study on voting rights. Host a "living museum" in the classroom where students, in character, share their figures' stories with visitors. Introduce students to the key symbols and slogans of the women's suffrage movement. Then, have them create their own suffrage posters using art supplies or Canva Edu, reviewed here, incorporating symbols, slogans, and images they learned about. Using the posters, have a voting rights march around the school.

The World History Encyclopedia takes encyclopedias to the next level through the addition of media, timelines, teaching materials, and much more. Use the keyword search to find specific information or select the index to find content in alphabetical order or by region or date. Explore interactive maps of prehistoric sites, the Roman Empire, and more. This encyclopedia also shares many downloadable lessons and curated collections. Finally, don't forget to visit the media library to find images, videos, 3D images, and audio recordings.

In the Classroom

This site is a must-have for any history teacher. First, bookmark the site for students to use as a multimedia encyclopedia and media resource. Then, include it with your other teaching resources to find engaging classroom lessons. Have students use the images on this site when creating presentations (using proper attribution, of course). Enhance student learning by having them use Genially, reviewed here, an excellent tool for students to use to create interactive and multimedia presentations. Have students add images to presentations, then create "hotspots" that link to outside resources such as videos, articles, or student-created texts.

World History for Us All is a free curriculum for middle and high schools that offers history as a single story instead of unconnected stories of various civilizations. The teaching units are divided into nine significant eras and include history, geography, and time and a look at the past and future. Each unit addresses the same three essential questions that offer the opportunity to explore history through a focus on the bigger picture. Select the link to any unit to see an overview of the content and download the unit in a PDF or DocX format. All materials correlate to state and national standards.

In the Classroom

Bookmark this site to use in whole as your history curriculum or use parts of lessons to supplement your current instruction. Collaborate with your peers to modify and adjust information in these units to suit your needs. If using Microsoft Word, share your document with peers and add highlights and comments as you adjust the unit. If using the PDF version, use the tools found at SmallPDF, reviewed here, to annotate, merge with your current materials, or convert to another format. As you use this curriculum to view the world from a global perspective, use Google Earth, reviewed here, to create a collaborative project by adding markers to areas around the world to create virtual tours of historic events told through the lens of different locations and perspectives.
 This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

See the history of the world from 3500BC to 2005AD! TimeMaps offers a look at every nation, empire, and civilization as one story using maps. Choose a date or time period to begin exploration. Use pinpoints located on the map to view specific information about that location. Use timelines located under the map to narrow down topics within a time period. For example, at 100 AD choose to view information by Ancient Rome, Mayan Civilization, Medieval India, or Ancient China. This is an excellent site for providing an overview and exploration of world civilizations during any given time period. Choose the "Are You a History Teacher" link to find several suggestions for using TimeMap in your classroom along several different lesson plans.

In the Classroom

Explore time periods together on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Find the time period you are teaching then explore pins to view more information about different civilizations during that time. Assign students different civilizations to research during a time period using TimeMaps as a starting point. Have students create their own comics to explain a civilization using comic-creation tools from this collection.

A five-minute video provides an overview of population growth, use the drop-down box to view the video in several different languages. Personalize your viewing experience to adjust features on the map with themes, overlays, and map dots. Click on the timeline below the map to view additional information about events throughout time. Choose the menu to find all the resources on this site, including several lesson plans.

In the Classroom

Try using this website in science class during environmental science units on human population growth. Start the class by sharing this site on an interactive whiteboard (or projector) for students to see. Provide time for students to look at the material and to generate questions about it. Brainstorm not only questions but what students learned from it. Allow groups time to research the economic and social issues that have caused such a change in population and how people live. Challenge students to make a multimedia presentation using Sway, reviewed here, about what they learned from the different time periods or themes. With Sway, you can have music, photos, videos, and even make it interactive.

Whom do you believe had the most enduring vision for America, Thomas Jefferson or Alexander Hamilton? Launch this interactive to learn more about the beliefs of each statesman and choose the vision that you believe would be best for America. Throughout the interactive, view several sets of statements and make choices before coming to a final decision. When complete, compare your thoughts to others who voted.

In the Classroom

This interactive provides a perfect introduction to any unit on the Constitution. Ask students to complete the short quiz, then compare their response to others. Create a quick poll (with no membership required) using SurveyRock, reviewed here, to view responses from your class. Have students make an interactive multimedia presentation after researching Hamilton or Jefferson using a tool like Sway, reviewed here, or Vevox, reviewed here. Vevox offers interactive features such as real-time polls and comments to keep viewers interested and involved in the presentation. Take advantage of the discussion questions on this site to encourage students to think about the visions of our government leaders.
