We suspect that this very nice introduction to Hanukkah was written for non-practicing Jews. As a result, it works for both Jews and non-Jews. You'll find information on the history of Hanukkah, descriptions and instructions for Hanukkah observances, and other information about Judaism.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or with a projector. Perhaps start with the Basics tab at the top and have students take the Hanukkah Quiz as a formative assessment. Then have small groups of students assigned to the different sections from the top menu. Use Jigsaw Classroom, reviewed here for students to research their section and share with others. Part of the National Park Service "Teaching with Historic Places" series, this site uses the Manzanar Japanese-American internment camp as a starting point for an exploration of the internment activities that took place during World War II. As with other lessons in this series, the lesson asks students to interpret archival photos and draw conclusions from the images and contemporary accounts of the internment.
In the Classroom
This is a very detailed and intricate lesson that can easily last a few days. However it is very informative and provides information about Japanese internment camps that is often brushed over in the book. Here's a really first-rate treatment of the Middle East, its three primary religious subtexts, and the relationship of these to issues like global economics, literature, and history. Users will find a wealth of time-lines, as well as a series of "connecting questions" about issues like the role of women, nation-states, and the impact of stereotypes on international perceptions about this region. Lots of "extended thinking" opportunities here. The video trailers on this site require QuickTime, however all the other available information make this site worth a visit.

Here's the BBC's collection of profiles on dozens of countries. Written with a decidedly Euro-centric focus, American teachers will find this collection an interesting resource for comparing perspectives on international relations. Well worth a visit for its depth of information.
In the Classroom
Use the country profiles as activators or introductory activities to a lesson on a specific current event. Before students are able to understand happenings of today, it can be beneficial to provide them with a greater context, as seen here. Here's a small site we hope will grow quickly. There are recordings and videos of famous political speeches - including William Jennings Bryan's "cross of gold" and Churchill's famous "iron curtain" speech. Interestingly, many of these are in their entirety, making for listening sessions of an hour or more. History teachers will find numerous possibilities for this one, especially if the collection continues to grow. If your district block YouTube the videos will not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Use this site to supplement a lecture on Martin Luther King and the impact of his "I have a dream" speech. Browse the results by speaker and select the speech under King's collection. After discussing King's role in civil rights, play the clip or as much of it as you can for students. Use the audio as a writing prompt, in which students respond to the difference in hearing vs reading the speech. Students should also respond to the emotional appeal of the speech, in addition to the overall message presented. This BBC site begins by admitting that Saddam Hussein is really the only "who" in Iraq, but it goes on to identify some of the other leading figures in a regime known for rapid personnel shifts. Older students may find this one useful as a way of putting faces to some of the names that are certain to be in the news in the days and weeks ahead.
In the Classroom
Although this site is a few years out of date, it still has some pretty good information as to how Hussein came to power as well as the political make-up of his regime before it toppled. Introduce this site on the interactive whiteboard before allowing students to read the information in cooperative learning groups. Use this site as the basis of a biography of Saddam Hussein, before allowing students to explore other avenues in their groups. Have cooperative learning groups create online books of their biographies using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. This is a great activator to a lesson on unit on the War in Iraq as well as the role of the UN in international conflicts. Include this site as a resource as you study religious traditions and celebrations of different cultures. Consider using Read Ahead, reviewed here, to share this information with students. Next, ask students to compare religious traditions in different cultures. Create a comparison/contrast "map" to promote cross-cultural understanding. Replace paper and pencil by using a free online tool such as bubbl.us, reviewed here. Student groups can make their own maps or work together as a class on interactive whiteboard. Another idea would be to have students create a holidays and celebrations wiki using TWiki, reviewed here, with different groups explaining events in different cultures. Or try writing children's books to promote cross-cultural understanding. This site would be great in a geography or World History classroom, helping students review for a final assessment. Have students "plan" a trip to some of the places/times studied in your class. Have them maintain a budget with their trip, and use this site to help students translate their financial dealings to have it all make sense. Users will find a detailed time line, articles about Galileo's accomplishments, and a nice series of interactive "experiments" illustrating his fundamental discoveries. Great site for the study of astronomy, inventors, or the Renaissance. Though some resources require Flash, there is a lot to earn from the features that don't.
