This extensive source, designed especially for elementary and middle school students, provides excellent information about the ancient cultures of the Near East, Egypt, Greece, and Rome. An additional section explores 19th - 20th century sub-Saharan Africa. Images of museum artifacts from each region are liberally distributed throughout the site, along with some interactive maps, occasional videos, and games. The Teacher Resource section provides lesson plans (aligned to national standards), suggestions for integrating art into the social studies curriculum, and helpful tips on using the site.

Take advantage of the free lesson plans offered on this site! This site could also be used as a learning center or station during a unit on Ancient Civilizations. This Webquest challenges students, working in small groups, to read, share, and compare/contrast folk tales from different parts of the world. A printable chart is provided to guide the analysis, and a graphic organizer can be downloaded to help students organize their thoughts for the final activity - the creation of an original folk tale. Links to online fairytales are provided.
In the Classroom
Use this web-quest as a hands-on practice activity for students following a lesson on folk tales. Have students complete the activity in cooperative learning groups on classroom computers. Be sure to help your weaker readers and ESL students by sharing the vocabulary words prior to reading, either on a handout or by projecting on an interactive whiteboard and highlighting them in the text as you come to them. English teachers will like the interactive part of this site, and students always enjoy a chance to work on computers!To make it more interactive, have students create and illustrate their stories on an online book-maker, such as Bookemon, reviewed here. Teachers can post the stories on the class webpage, allowing parents to get to see the finished products!

The most impressive feature of the site is a self-guided QuickTime tour through the Land of the Pharaohs that offers dozens of impressive 360 degree photos. Originally designed as a companion site to a NOVA program, the site could be the focus of a great computer lab activity for an ancient history unit.

Learn about Christmas in Sweden, Mexico, Italy, Ukraine, Greece and many other countries; each country has links to investigate in the text. Use the search to find the "History of Christmas" page with many more interesting sections like a video titled Christmas Becomes a Holiday, and sections about How the Civil War Changed Christmas in the United States, a Christmas Photoo Gallery, History of Christmas Trees, United States, How 25 Christmas Traditions Got Their Start, and lots more.
In the Classroom
Use the video on the "History of Christmas" page to show students how the tradition of Christmas evolved from ancient times. The section about the Christmas Truce of 1914 would be a really great find for a class working on WWI, particularly if the timing is right before the holidays. Unfortunately the video on that page is not free to view at this time; it accompanies the article, and teachers can just as easily display or print the article to share the same information. In the Classroom
Use the "celebrate Birthdays" to create a "this day in history" display for the classroom. The other sections of the website would be excellent to review for any subject, so find the appropriate subject and have students open the site on individual computers. In groups of 2-3, have students compete to see who can get the highest score! As you can see from the previous description, there is a lot to learn at this site. The interactive still require flash, however there is so much more to read and images to vies. .

The challenge activities promote higher level thinking and are ideal for independent practice and review.

There is a lot of content on the site, so it would be beneficial to create a graphic organizer for students to help organize their notes. Click on the Learning Hub and select a level (elementary, middle school, or high school) to explore age-appropriate challenges across content areas. Many of the activities on this site are free, but registration and a fee are required to access some of the special features.

This site contains some riveting resources that would be valuable for use in a 20th century American History class. The "Teachers' Web" up and running and the oral history interviews, available as audio files, are wonderfully revealing primary sources. If you are interesting in presenting the Vietnam War from a very personal, human perspective, consider using this on-line archive. The site also provides a collection of historical photographs and tips for conducting Oral History interviews - an unforgettable learning experience for your students!

Take a virtual field trip to one of the most famous and intriguing historic structures in the world. The Tower of London's crucial role in English history is provided along with an interactive map of the entire complex that permits independent investigation of every nook and cranny. Students can meet the prisoners who met their fate within the tower and those who succeeded in escaping. Read some spine-tingling ghost stories and discover the legend behind those ever-present ravens. Consider spicing up a study of the history of Great Britain with this entertaining and educational site. Though a few interactives require Flash, there is so much information, and so many interesting images that a visit to this site is worth your time.
In the Classroom
Use this site as a guide for a group activity researching the Tower of London. Seperate students in groups, randomly assigning each one of the many subject headings within the site. Have the groups read and interpret the contents of their section, to be presented to the class as a whole. Have students narrate and add text to an image using PowerPoint Online, reviewed here. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced), and then narrate the photo as if it is a news report. To find Creative Commons images for student projects (with credit, of course), try Pikwizard, reviewed here. World history, U.S. history, rhetoric and debate, health, and technology are addressed by this comprehensive examination of some of the greatest disasters in maritime history - the Titanic, the Lusitania, and the Empress of Ireland. Full lesson plans (these are really outstanding!), aligned with national standards are provided. Topics include The Blame Game (a great role-playing experience), Bigger, Faster, Stronger, Higher (a comparison of the Titanic and Challenger disasters), and Titanic Artifacts (what we've discovered about the lives of those lost). Students can even learn about effective Internet search strategies in the Lost Liners scavenger hunt activity.
In the Classroom
Click on the section entitled "teacher resources" and take advantage of the free lesson plans and activities offered. Most require a basic knowledge of the 5 major liners that sank, so the day before activities have students explore the site on the interactive whiteboard or individual computers. To assess what students are learning, put them in groups and have groups select a liner that they will be researching. Groups will go through the information offered by the site and possibly other sites in an effort to attain images and information about their lost ship. Have groups create an online graphic telling the story of their liner and its immediate impact. Have students use a tool such as Zeemaps, reviewed here.
