The page includes links to similarly detailed information on other aspects of this looming conflict.

Because of the focus on the Iraq War, these maps do a great job of emphasizing the impact of the military in these regions. This site from the Minneapolis Institute of the Arts is almost as good as a field trip. Stuffed with images, video clips, and text, it offers a presentation on Modernism that runs from the British arts and crafts movement in the 1880s through to American Art Deco of the 1940s. There are images, text, and video narration for each segment, providing a nice evolutionary tour. Use the pieces together or individually as supplemental material for art history, or as an adjunct to an American or European history class.
In the Classroom
Use this site on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start your study of modernism in the past two centuries. Use the site's images and virtual exhibits to showcase the movement being talked about to compliment your class lectures. Another useful item is that some of the exhibits have a quick video clip that can help introduce the idea to your class in a way that foreshadows the rest of your lecture. While most of this site deals with visiting Versailles, students will find sections dealing with the King's daily routine and the life of the French court in the 17th and 18th centuries. In addition, there are images of some of the more notable artwork, and of course, large sections available "seulement en Francais," which we hope will please the world language teachers. There's nothing like it elsewhere. There is an incredible amount of information to discover at this site by scrolling down the home page AND click on the Explore tab at the top of the home page. There are a few videos that are hosted on YouTube, if your district blocks YouTube they may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use the menus to explore the "hidden" content. Then divide the class into small groups based on their area of interest and have them research their topic. Challenge them to research other sources to learn even more about the palace and its inhabitants. World cultures or government classes will find the multidimensional counters on this site a wonderful way to illustrate the growth (or depletion) population, resources, and other global activity. It's a very tangible illustration of the rate at which things are changing in our world. Teachers can be creative with this one.
In the Classroom
This is a really great way to demonstrate a lot of the concepts taught in a Cultural Geography or US government class. Assign cooperative learning groups to investigate a portion of this site, based on what's being taught at the time. A good example would be having environmental sustainability group looking at water and land resources, as well as the growing population. Have cooperative learning groups create podcasts demonstrating their understanding of one of the concepts. There are dozens of examples drawn from as many ancient cultures, and all organized into themes that would have been essential to these civilizations. A set of lesson plans rounds out this intriguing unit.

Here's a really first-rate treatment of the Middle East, its three primary religious subtexts, and the relationship of these to issues like global economics, literature, and history. Users will find a wealth of time-lines, as well as a series of "connecting questions" about issues like the role of women, nation-states, and the impact of stereotypes on international perceptions about this region. Lots of "extended thinking" opportunities here. The video trailers on this site require QuickTime, however all the other available information make this site worth a visit.

Here's the BBC's collection of profiles on dozens of countries. Written with a decidedly Euro-centric focus, American teachers will find this collection an interesting resource for comparing perspectives on international relations. Well worth a visit for its depth of information.

Use the country profiles as activators or introductory activities to a lesson on a specific current event. Before students are able to understand happenings of today, it can be beneficial to provide them with a greater context, as seen here. Next, ask students to compare religious traditions in different cultures. Create a comparison/contrast "map" to promote cross-cultural understanding. Replace paper and pencil by using a free online tool such as bubbl.us, reviewed here. Student groups can make their own maps or work together as a class on interactive whiteboard. Another idea would be to have students create a holidays and celebrations wiki using TWiki, reviewed here, with different groups explaining events in different cultures.
