Special features: great database of African maps. This site offers many different maps on African countries ...anything from vegetation to political (many political). There is also a range in years; some maps date back as far as 1975. This site may be useful if you're looking for specific detail (agriculture in 1994); however, the map files are large and may take a while to download.
In the Classroom
These maps would be an excellent addition to any civics or world history class. During a unit on Africa, open one of these maps on the interactive whiteboard or projector. Keep the map up during lecture so students can understand the location of events geographically. The Smithsonian has created a colorful, if sometimes awkward, resource for studying African history, art, and culture. The site features works by African sculptors and artists, but the African history time-line is the most useful instructional component. It shows African influences in Spain, the New World, and many other places. We hope the content for these sections will expand over time. Still, this is a very useful resource for explaining the evolution and spread of African cultural elements.
In the Classroom
Share this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector as an introduction to a unit about the slave trade in Africa or as review. The timeline begins in the 1400's with the Portuguese, and extends until the mid 1800's. What is nice about the timeline is that to access the additional information, you have to click on the specific event. Which means that before you access the event, you can test student knowledge before checking the answer in the background. Here's a South African site that offers images and camera feeds from a variety of wildlife parks and refuges in Africa. There's no way to know exactly what you'll find, and the speed of your connection will certainly affect the performance, but you can find great images here. No animals at the live camera? Visit the highlights from live camera feeds!
In the Classroom
This is an excellent site to supplement a unit on Africa specifically, or one that is focused on different environments over the world. Save the site as a favorite on classroom computers, and have students look at in pairs or cooperative learning groups. Use the site to show kids how different the African country-side is from their own. Because one can not predict when or where animals will appear, it is probably best to have students check periodically through the day or classroom period. Have students observe the camera-view, and write a comparative piece on the differences between the region shown and their own. The Washington Post presents this extensive site which examines the conduct and consequences of the Gulf War in 1991. Complete with maps, damage assessment charts, and commentary by former commanders, the site chronicles the war's effect on the middle east while discussing the problems inherent in managing a limited conflict. Good starting point for a discussion of the interplay between military, political, and diplomatic interests in American foreign policy.
In the Classroom

In the Classroom
Although there may not be any current updates on this site, there is a lot of background information that could help students who need catching up do so without being singled out. Use the site as a learning center or station, clearly defining which part students should focus on. Based on what they read, have students create timelines of topics such as political rulers, battles, colonization efforts, factors leading to the fall of Rome, etc. Have students use a tool such as Preceden, reviewed here. Use the images and videos in the exhibit for a visual discovery activity. Select 3-4 images, placing them on a slide-show presentation. Have students take notes on each of the images and videos, noting what they observe, infer and predict about each one. After the presentation, have a class discussion based around student notes. This would be great review activity before an assessment, allowing students to apply the knowledge just learned. The site has numerous topics and layers, with most content delivered through stories. There are also instructional games and quizzes. Five stars for this one! The games require SHOCKWAVE. The site includes the link to get it, or you can get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

Use the online exhibit as a introductory activity to some of the native culture of Venezuela. Have students look at the site in cooperative learning groups, with the intentions of summarizing the points of the collection in a multimedia presentation. Have students use a tool such as Zeemaps, reviewed here. While a bit text-heavy, visuals support most of the sections, and the content could be useful for research projects or general information. The site includes a short biography of Mahatma Ghandi. This is a "labor of love" site created by two faculty members at UCLA.

This is an elegant Indian site describing archeological excavations at the site of Lothal, an ancient city on the Indus river. There are interactive maps, descriptions of life in the ancient city, and a catalog of artifacts found during the excavations. Beautiful quality, and a little slow as a result, but if you're looking for examples of how archaeologists work, it's worth the wait.
In the Classroom
Use the images in this site to create a visual discovery activity during a unit on the Indus River Valley. Select 3-5 of the more powerful images, placing them in a Powerpoint presentation to be displayed over the interactive whiteboard or projector. Allow the class to view the images for 30-45 seconds each, writing down what they observe, infer and predict about each image. After all the images have been seen, start a class discussion based on student's findings. National Geographic publishes this ongoing collection of short documentary pieces, each of which has both text and audio narration in high quality stereo sound, with lots of natural effects. For students with special needs, who have trouble either reading or attending, these short sound clips provide a well-constructed exposure to topics ranging from science to cultures and celebrations. Watch for new segments each week, along with a monthly feature presentation.
In the Classroom
Because there are a LOT of short recordings on this site, be sure to examine it thoroughly before allowing students to use it. Find one or several informative recordings that could benefit your classroom, and use them as introductory pieces before beginning a unit or lesson. Play the recording using the interactive whiteboard as a starter, previewing the lesson to come, allowing students to reflect on the recording via writing or verbally in a class discussion. Enhance student learning and replace paper pen by asking students to write blogs sharing information learned using a site like Edublog, reviewed here. Edublog offers tools for creating class and individual blogs. This site has SO many resources! Use the activities as learning center or stations, or complete them together as a class using the interactive whiteboard or projector. There are also practice quizzes and tests that can be used to help students review for assessments or to assess what students already know coming into a new unit. The activities are very cute and actually quite humerous - just make sure to include headphones for individual computers. While it is targeted toward travelers, this site offers an incredible amount of information on countries, including history, economy, culture, events, reading material (reference and personal accounts of experiences), etc. It's easy to navigate and search. This site could be used for many disciplines (science, English, history, art, music, even math-unit on other currencies and how to convert).
In the Classroom
Use this site during a geography, economics, or civic class on a unit that compares the cultures of countries around the world. Save the site as a favorite on classroom computers, and have students access the site individually. Assign every student a country and have them create a travel brochure about it using a tool such as Padlet (reviewed here). Make sure to have students include similar topics to allow for a compare/contrast discussion to follow!
