Check out these free interactive literacy games for the emergent learner. Practicing basic skills is an entertaining experience at ICT Games. The skills include: spelling patterns, phoneme patterns, phonics, blending sounds, high frequency words, beginning science vocabulary, using rhyming to read new and unfamiliar words, and reading for understanding. It also has interactive dictionaries for the beginner through upper elementary learner. There is no registration required. Note that the site is from England, so there are minor spelling and terminology differences from U.S. English in a few games. Preview the specific game to be sure.

In the Classroom
Use your projector and interactive whiteboard to introduce the site. You might start with "The Wordy Woods," an interactive resource for displaying useful words. Start by checking the lists, and have students identify words they've already learned in class. Populate the "woods" with those first. Save this! Then, as students learn new words have them fill in the forest.ENL/ELL students with emergent literacy skills will benefit from this site by practicing spelling and reading skills. Make a shortcut to this site on classroom computers and use it as a center. Use a program like Symbaloo, reviewed here, to create link shortcuts on your student computers. Include a link to the ITC Games on your classroom website or blog for students to practice at home. This is a great site for students to use for additional practice on a skill that is difficult.

Find an eclectic mix of simulation and interactive activities to gamify learning. At the time of this review, there were seven diverse topics: Engine Simulator, Day Night Simulator, Dress the Knight, Nocturnal Animals, The Human Body, Braille Builder, and Captain Scott and His Crew (South Pole exploration). Each item delivers animated simulations of content. Some interactives offer options such as including labels or text highlighters. Others, such as the Human Body simulation, allow choices from several different topics within the simulator such as different body systems or organs for viewing.

Share simulations on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) during health, seasons, animal, and other units that correspond to content on the site. IdeaBoardz is an easy-to-use a collaborative whiteboard created for brainstorming and sharing ideas. Instead of starting with a blank board and adding information, IdeaBoardz provides several options for creating boards from templates. Choose to create a board, add a name and description to begin. Use the dropdown box to select the type of board from choices such as pro and con or creating from up to ten sections. Next, share your board using the URL provided. Finally, participants select the plus sign located next to a heading to add a sticky note and type comments. Registration is not required; however, creating an account allows participants to revisit saved boards.
In the Classroom
Use IdeaBoardz as an engaging way to brainstorm ideas, share student comments related to any classroom conversations, or as a tool for exit tickets. For example, use the two-column option as a schema activator when introducing a new lesson. Create a column for students to share what they know and another column for sharing what additional support is needed. Include a link to your collaborative board on your class webpage for students to view and add items as desired. Share with students to create boards for use with their presentations. Ideogram uses artificial intelligence to generate images from text. Explore images created by Ideogram users by scrolling through the home page and selecting any image to view the prompt used to create it. Additional links include options to save images as favorites, remix them, or retry creating them. Free accounts allow you to make up to 25 images daily. Enter your prompt in the chat bar and choose from options for size, privacy, and image style. Each prompt generates four images. Open any image and right-click to save it on your device.
In the Classroom
Ideogram is an excellent tool for creating AI-generated images and a valuable resource for learning how to create effective prompts. Scroll through the home page to find images of interest, then open the picture to view the prompt used to make it. Teach students how to write descriptive sentences by creating AI-generated images; students quickly learn how to add specific details to create a desired output. Use Ideogram to engage students in creative writing projects by generating images based on anything their imaginations share. Include AI-generated images in your classroom newsletter, website, or worksheets as an easy resource for adding pictures without spending much time searching for the right photograph. This entertaining video is only four minutes long, but the illustrations will delight and the explanations will make the meaning of the idioms clear.

Add this site to your classroom computers and send-home newsletters to help clear up the meanings of often confusing idioms with a humorous touch. Although the focus is on very young or ENL/ESL students, the cleverly done drawings approach of the videos might serve as a model for student creations of vocabulary word explanations. World language students, similarly, could create similar videos or in class presentations using the draw it, tell it technique to explain new vocabulary words. Bookmark this site as you and your class learn about the Iditarod and follow the Iditarod as it takes place each March. Sign up to receive email notice of the latest blog entries. Take advantage of the many free lesson plans for use in your classroom. Have students create maps using Zeemaps, reviewed here, to follow the journey of the Iditarod. Zeemaps allows students to create audio recordings AND choose various locations on a map where the route takes place. IDroo supports an unlimited number of meeting participants, the only limitations are computer power and internet connection speed. There is a professional math typing tool built-in making it easy to teach or work through math problems collaboratively. IDroo is integrated with Skype to enhance the online collaboration experience. Currently it only works on Windows systems and requires a software download.

The If/Then Collection is a free resource for finding and sharing images and videos of women related to STEM topics. Search the collection by media type, discipline, location, or ambassador name. Another option is to browse through the featured categories found on the home page, including topics such as sports, explorers, and hero videos. Then, share items by selecting the share icon located on each thumbnail image. The required prompt asks you to complete a short form before sharing. The form includes the user's email, the purpose for using the content, and the checkbox agreeing to proper use. Although items on the site are available for free use without crediting the photographer or videographer, proper credit is always encouraged when possible.
In the Classroom
Include this site with your other bookmarks for photo and video resources to use on any occasion. Consider using Symbaloo Edu, reviewed here, or Wakelet, reviewed here, to curate media resources to share with students. Easily annotate images using "hotspots" created using the Image Annotator. Upload an image from your computer. Click on any spot within your image to add a title, description, and URL link if desired. Add as many hotspots as you want, then save when finished. The Image Annotator requires a password when finished, this allows you the option to return and edit your photo. Share your image by choosing the embed icon, the popup provides links to the URL link, embed code, QR code, or download the web shortcut.

Image Annotator offers an endless array of options for classroom use. Create an image with hotspots to share on your whiteboard as an introduction to any new unit of study, or start with a blank image and add hotspots throughout your unit with included links to additional information. Be sure to share the link to your interactive image on your class website. Ask students to create an interactive image as an alternative to a written assignment, have them include links to websites used for their research or to work they created online. Sharing your Meme is easy via any social network, or you can copy the code for the image link or the image HTML.
In the Classroom
Since the images can be kept private, this would make the perfect "getting to know you" activity for beginning of the school year. Have students upload a picture of themselves doing their favorite activity and label it with witty text or a favorite quote (or song lyric?). Have them upload images that represent their interests and character traits. Print the images with text for a back to school bulletin board. Alternatively, make a slide show to play as the parents enter the room. Use a tool like Slides, reviewed here. At the end of the year, students could do a "that was then, this is now" project. Have them upload a current picture doing a favorite activity, and different images that represent new interests they have learned this year. Post the images side by side for spring open house night or as a year-end activity. To find Creative Commons images for student projects (with credit, of course), try Vecteezy, reviewed here. For other uses, have students practice new words in a world language class by labeling and identifying images in that language. Create writing prompts using several annotated images. Have students create annotated images to explain key terms in science class. In ELA class, make homophone or vocabulary images to show the correct word along with an image that explains it.Edge Features:

Use this tool to correctly use and give proper credit for images from Flickr Creative Commons on any web age or wiki. Search for images using Flickr Creative Commons reviewed here or from the handy link provided on ImageCodr. Enter the URL for the picture page from Flickr, and ImageCodr will generate a block of HTML code for you to include on your web page or other online project. This code will make both the image AND the appropriate credit display. A brief licensing summary shows as a caption when you use the embed code. Note that this tool does not work for including images and credits in offline projects such as PowerPoint slides. It will work in any online tool that allows embed codes!

Be sure students understand the different types of images available and use ones that are licensed correctly. Looking for easier ways to share images? Pronounced "Imager," this site is easy to use. Use the super-simple photo-sharing site to upload photos or insert image URL addresses. Click the upload button or enter the URL of the image from the Internet (obtainable by right clicking the online image and selecting "properties" or "Get info"). No need to register for an account. Uploaded images are private and only the person who uploaded has the URL of the image. Use the simple editing options to be sure the image fits in the blog, wiki, or site you are using it on. File upload is limited to 2 MB. Use a direct link or embed code to share your uploaded image wherever you need. Use caution when sharing this site with students. Content is not filtered and may contain inappropriate language.
In the Classroom
Use in the classroom to quickly upload and share images. Create albums where individual photos can be titled or captioned. Have students categorize photos and describe them. Use for any project, class explanation of concepts, experiments, or demonstrations. Share pictures of class happenings, speakers, field trips, and other opportunities you would want to share.Users must be able to find a suitable image for upload from their computer or the Internet. Follow the very simple directions to manipulate the image. Since no registration is necessary, Imgur is easy and safe to use. Be aware that relying on services such as these can be a problem if the site no longer exists in the future. Be sure that students understand rules for sharing appropriate and inappropriate images and copyright concerns.
