Create and activate your account to begin using Involve.me. Add images, files, links, and other features to your project. When finished, publish and share by using the project URL provided.
In the Classroom
Use Involve.me templates and designs in a variety of ways in any classroom. Create short, interactive quizzes for students and receive feedback immediately through an email or within your Involve.me account. For example, modify the Literature Pop Quiz template for any novel or substitute questions about your latest science experiment to assess student understanding. Use the How Well Do You Know History? template to ask questions about important events during your social studies unit. Have students incorporate the survey templates to use as an interactive portion of classroom presentations. Include the inflation calculator during an economics lesson to help students understand the effects of inflation. iorad is a browser-based resource for creating interactive step-by-step tutorials for using any website. Tutorials include highlighted and interactive directions. Create a free personal account, then follow the directions to download iorad's browser extension or desktop application to your computer. Create a tutorial by selecting the "new capture" link and following the directions to begin recording from your chosen tab. Demonstrate the procedure and stop recording when finished. iorad automatically creates the tutorial and offers options to edit the contents before completing the publishing process. Share completed tutorials using the links or embed code provided.
In the Classroom
The number of classroom uses for this tool is countless! Use iorad to create guides for students to log in to software, games, and computer programs. Create step-by-step guides for students on adding or editing images in tools such as Google Slides, reviewed here or Genially, reviewed here. Ask students to include iorad tutorials within multimedia presentations to demonstrate information, such as how to search Google for Creative Commons Images or narrow searches to fit into a custom time frame. This tool is a terrific online photo editing and paint app. No account or registration is necessary. Upload a picture or find the URL of a photo from online or Facebook. Re-size, flip, rotate, crop, or alter the exposure, saturation, and contrast. Use additional features such as fix image, smart blur, and reflections. Use even more effects such as a cartoonizer, artistic painting, or wanted photo. You will love the retouch section which features the standard red-eye and blemish fix, along with teeth whitening. Add captions or text to the pictures with a wide selection of fonts. You can also create collages, but you must enable local storage of images on your computer. The Painter section includes standard pen, brush, erase with a sponge, and burn effects to allow for drawings on the pictures. Once completed, download the finished picture to a computer, post on Facebook, share by url, or upload to Flickr. Here is a sampleof adding text to an online image without even creating an account.

Use this tool anytime that photos need to be edited for use on class blogs, wikis, or sites. Encourage students to use on images for projects or presentations. Use the editor to edit pictures to fit styles of pictures when doing historical reports or to set a mood. Use caption bubbles for the photos themselves to tell the stories. One of the most valuable (though visually plain) sections of the Internet Public Library, this site offers students reliable sources for literary criticism on the authors most studied in high school. For most students, writing their first research paper is a daunting task and a great temptation to plagiarize from a vast Internet. Walking your students through the maze of biographical and literary criticism explained on this site can show them how to incorporate their own thoughts about a work with support from the academic world. They can search via the author's last name, by the title of the work, or by period in literary history. Students can also access the Online Literary Criticism Guide for assistance within the site or the Literary Criticism Pathfinder, a nice guide to directing students how to find resources within their own libraries.
In the Classroom
You might choose an author and, using an interactive whiteboard or projector, have students find sources for that author and discuss their own ideas of his work in contrast to what others have said. There are other materials and offerings advertised on the site, but no purchase is needed to obtain the free e-Books. Topics include ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, School Anxiety, Anger, Worry, and more. Raise student awareness and empathy levels for differences in people inside and outside of class. A few e-books are also available in French. Fill in the simple form with your name, books desired, and how you plan to use the books. (No email address is necessary, but can be provided if you want email updates from the website.) Find out instantly if the problem you are having opening a web site is YOUR problem or a website that is down. Is It Down Right Now (iidrn.com for short) instantly "pings" a site so you can tell whether the site is down for everyone or just for you (perhaps due to a glitch with your Internet provider). The Internet is never a sure thing, but this tool tells you whether it's just YOU having trouble. Although it sounds geeky, it's easy. Copy/paste or type the URL you are trying to reach into the box at top right, and click "Check." The results tell you how long it takes for the site to respond and how long it has been down (if it is). What a handy tool for ANYONE using the web! What this tool will not tell you is if you are mistyping the URL, so always double check.

Mark this one in your Favorites and remind your student to use it before they call out, "The page isn't opening!" in the middle of class. Make it one of the required tools as part of "ask three before me." If you have a class web page, this is a handy way to find out if your web page service (or district-provided web page server) is having trouble "serving up" the class page. Tell savvy students who are unable to access web sites to use this tool and take a screen shot of the results if a site assigned for homework is "down" for prolonged periods. The National Park Service presents this massive unit for Island of the Blue Dolphins. See the village, visit the island, and learn about the sea life around the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Students will love this artistic interactive site full of pictures they can click on to visit links that ask questions and give more information. Across the top menu are many resources for teachers and students. There is an "About the Author" with a short biography about Scott O'Dell. Choose to follow the story by chapter or theme. Click the picture for each chapter and scroll to the bottom to find a writing prompt and lesson plan. There are many clickable resources in-between.

If you use literature circles (small reading groups) in your classroom, using a unit like this and allowing the groups to go through the unit at their own pace, or suggesting a jigsaw approach to reviewing a set of chapters is a good way to make this unit "student centered." Learn about the Jigsaw cooperative learning approach at Jigsaw Classroom, reviewed here. Enhance student learning by asking them to make an Infographic using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here, about what they learned from the novel; an inforgraphic would be a great conclusion for the lit circle project. Post the infographics on your web page for all your students and their parents to enjoy.

iThrive Sim: Lives in Balance is a digital role-playing simulation game. The situation helps students in high school social studies, history, and humanities classes to strengthen civic and social-emotional learning (SEL). The digital simulations are designed to support student-driven learning, and the student's actions determine the storyline. Students will play as government officials who must work collaboratively to analyze the data they receive to make decisions. Registration with a school email address is required to play. This game was designed to function within school firewalls. Please contact your school's IT department if you have trouble accessing it. iThrive Sim: Lives in Balance event is centered around topics that may be sensitive for some students. Consider offering alternatives or providing extra support if needed.

Engage your high school students with iThrive Sim: Lives in Balance. The game-based simulation includes teacher preparation, pre-simulation, and optional post-simulation activities. The full simulation takes about 35 minutes to play. Therefore, teachers should plan for the entire simulation and activities to take at least three 45-minute class periods. Each poem provides a list of high frequency words or "unique" words at the bottom of the web page as well as a writing extension page.
In the Classroom
Share the poetry on your projector or interactive whiteboard. If individual computers are available, even better! Just be sure to remember the headsets! Maybe consider creating a "Poetry Station" using this site on a computer cluster.Review corresponding high frequency words with students prior to reading the poems. Have students search for those words throughout the poem. Incorporate some of the words onto the classroom word wall or point out existing words on the wall as a connection activity to the literature. Students can complete the extension print out activity as a center assignment and proceed to publish it with illustrations.

I'm Reading! is the highest level of the Starfall.com reading activity levels. This site offers various books, with or without audio, and students can highlight the words of each read-along story at their personal pace. Through literature options such as plays, fiction/non-fiction, comics, Chinese fables, Greek mythology, and folk tales, students can experience a wide variety of literary genres.
In the Classroom
Have students work independently or in small groups to read the books. Students can read in a choral manner or as repeated readings in order to increase fluency. This lesson plan was one of the winners in a lesson plan contest sponsored by TeachersFirst. TeachersFirst editors have added technology options where appropriate.
