Innovative Learning HQ shares professional development resources in technology for educators, classroom lessons designed to bring STEM education to bridge the digital divide across under-resourced communities, and various AR/VR apps. Create a free account to access over 100 lesson plans and professional development sessions that provide micro-credentials. Browse the featured resources or select activities by content area. Most activities provide a focus on virtual reality or augmented reality and include a facilitator's guide, introductory videos, and student activity worksheets. In addition, lessons offer options for teaching to different grade level bands that form a progression of learning. Tasks include correlation to Next Generation Science Standards, Common Core Standards, and ISTE Standards. Finally, professional development courses provide coaching, collaboration, blended learning, and more learning opportunities. Create an account and sign in to submit your own stories, comment on articles, or up-vote newsworthy items. Since these are user-submitted, take caution in allowing students to explore on their own. Some grammatical errors were noted in a few of the articles. Challenge your students to be the editors and see if they can find any errors.
In the Classroom
Share Grasswire on your interactive whiteboard or projector as part of any current events discussion. Since the readers submit the articles on Grasswire, have students browse articles to find information that may be untrue, misleading, or opinion instead of facts. Use articles as examples, and then have students write their own current events submissions. ELA teachers may want to have students correct articles with grammatical errors as a lesson in proof-reading. You will be presented with a list of authors to follow based on your genres, and then you create your password. Next you will get a list of books recommended for you. This tool helps you save time by allowing you to edit PDF files in Word to avoid reinventing the wheel. (Beware of copyrighted materials, however). Resources include weekly quizzes, writing prompts, interactive graphs, and much more. Suggested prompts employ information found on the front page of the newspaper as the starting point for KWL (what you know, want to know, what you learned) charts, and exploration of graphs and charts. Additional activities include questions that promote critical thinking and debate, along with links to resources to use within these debates.
In the Classroom
Be sure to bookmark this site as an important resource for lessons about the coronavirus and also as a resource for implementing online teaching activities. Incorporate ideas and activities found on this site into a blended learning system such as ActivelyLearn, reviewed here or Curipod, reviewed here. Both of these sites include features to create remote lessons with text, videos, and quizzes and provide educators instant feedback on student understanding. As students develop an understanding of the effects and makeup of the coronavirus, use Annotely, reviewed here, to upload and label an image sharing their knowledge. For example, have younger students upload a picture of their home, then label different surfaces with a short sentence on how they can spread or receive germs. For older students, ask them to use Annotely to label the different areas found in the community that leads to the spread of disease.

Whiteboard.fi is a temporary whiteboard tool created specifically for educators and for classroom use. Free accounts offer you the ability to create and use a whiteboard and the accompanying tools without registration. Temporary rooms are deleted following two hours of inactivity. Choose the option to start a new class and follow the steps to begin a session. Options allow you to create a waiting room where students have to be allowed into the whiteboard area and include a save mode that adapts for participants with limited internet strength. Once the room is created, share the URL or QR Code with students. The whiteboard tools include text, drawing, images, and more. When finished, use the included options to save your whiteboard as an image file or PDF document.
In the Classroom
Use Whiteboard.fi to collaborate with students to share and organize information instantly. Use the whiteboard as a brainstorming or sketching space as groups (or the class) share ideas for a major project or solve a real-world problem. Use this site in a computer lab (or on laptops) to create a drawing of the setting in a story as it is read aloud. As an assessment idea, have students draw out a simple cartoon with stick figures to explain a more complex process, such as how democracy works. If you are lucky enough to teach in a BYOD setting, have a blended classroom, or are distance teaching, use this whiteboard tool to view students' whiteboards in real-time. For example, if you study weather, have students diagram the layers of the atmosphere and what happens during a thunderstorm. Introduce this tool to students who are working on group projects. Look for the Free Tools or Freemium icon for free resources Auto Classmate offers. These include an AI-powered lesson plan generator, an activity generator, a would you rather question generator, and a lesson plan and activity forecasting tool, with additional tools being added often. After selecting a tool, input the information in the prompts, such as grade level, content, and options for output. Some tools require registration; others do not. After responding, Auto Classmate offers options to remix for additional suggestions, download the information as a PDF, and provide ideas on how to use the AI responses.

Think of Auto Classmate as your virtual teaching library. Grab the link to invite others to your game room to begin group activities. Once in the room, use chat features to interact, create a quiz or choose from the library of pre-made quizzes, or add a playlist from Spotify as part of your activity room. With the free account you get 1 meeting room, 10 participants,15 min sessions, games, quizzes, and icebreakers.

Use Doozy as a virtual get-to-know-you activity when starting remote learning activities or when collaborating with other classrooms. Is It Down Right Now (iidrn.com for short) instantly "pings" a site so you can tell whether the site is down for everyone or just for you (perhaps due to a glitch with your Internet provider). The Internet is never a sure thing, but this tool tells you whether it's just YOU having trouble. Although it sounds geeky, it's easy. Copy/paste or type the URL you are trying to reach into the box at top right, and click "Check." The results tell you how long it takes for the site to respond and how long it has been down (if it is). What a handy tool for ANYONE using the web! What this tool will not tell you is if you are mistyping the URL, so always double check.

In the Classroom
Mark this one in your Favorites and remind your student to use it before they call out, "The page isn't opening!" in the middle of class. Make it one of the required tools as part of "ask three before me." If you have a class web page, this is a handy way to find out if your web page service (or district-provided web page server) is having trouble "serving up" the class page. Tell savvy students who are unable to access web sites to use this tool and take a screen shot of the results if a site assigned for homework is "down" for prolonged periods. Convert your text into audio spoken by your favorite characters using FakeYou; no registration is required. Choose from many options to select a voice; options include celebrities, cartoon characters, foreign language accents, and more. After choosing a voice, type your text into the box and click "Speak." Scroll down to find the results. Use the play button to listen to the results and follow the link to download the WAV file. Audio is computer-generated, so it may not be an exact duplicate of the chosen voice; however, the representations are close and are helpful for several different uses.
In the Classroom
Create and use audio recordings from FakeYou in several different ways in the classroom. For example, convert a short student-written speech into an audio recording featuring a well-known politician's voice, such as Barack Obama or Franklin Roosevelt. In addition, FakeYou offers many voices making it an excellent option to use when writing biographies to add audio to multimedia presentations. Although this isn't the goal of every video creator, the courses provide many valuable lessons in video production and creating engaging content. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.
In the Classroom
View videos with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard before assigning multimedia projects. Include a link to the videos on your class web page for students to view at home. Set up a video chat time for one of these YouTube videos using a tool such as Watch2Gether, reviewed here, to discuss the video lesson. Be sure to share with your school's journalism teacher for use with writing and video projects.
