Using art, music, and literary classics, students explore the idea of "monsters" in society, analyze how they are portrayed, the purpose they serve, and why they are necessary. After an introductory brainstorming activity, students read Beowulf and Grendel, watch and listen to snatches of monster-inspired music (Night on Bald Mountain, Jaws, and others), then apply research skills to design and present their own conceptual monster. Includes an assessment rubric, links to multimedia resources, and extension activities.

In the Classroom

Enhance student learning by having them use Genially, reviewed here, or Canva Comic Strips Template, reviewed here, to create and present their conceptual monster to classmates.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

This online reference contains nearly everything a student of Shakespeare needs, including a complete library of works, summaries of the plays, a collection of quotes organized by work, and a useful glossary of words used by the Bard. Also includes information about the controversial authorship debate, a Shakespearean timeline, and biographical information.

In the Classroom

Students seem to be prepared to think reading Shakespeare is hard. Engage them by starting with the summary of the play you plan to read. Next employ Read Ahead, reviewed here, to develop a guided reading activity, Next, enhance student reading by allowing students to highlight parts of the text with the part of the summary as an interpretation. Finally, extend student learning by having student groups create a reader's theater play for Shakespeare you used. Need some help with reader's theater? Take a look at Literacy Connections, reviewed here, many guides for teachers and students about incorporating, writing, and performing a reader's theater play. Find information about reader's theater by scrolling down the main page and finding a menu list on the right.

Test the skills of your most talented wordsmiths with this interactive game. Players are presented with a word, and then have three minutes to form as many 5-letter words as possible from the letters contained in that word. It's tougher than it sounds and is a great mind-stretcher for those extra minutes at the beginning and end of class.

This challenging, interactive word game is more than a "just-for-fun" activity. Students must use strategy and vocabulary skills to make changes to a starting word - one letter at a time - and form a new word. Each word morph can be solved in 10 moves or less, but must be completed within 5 minutes. A purposeful and competitive "filler" to add to a language arts class.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning station for students who may finish work early, and need something productive to do to avoid bothering other students. To make it competitive, keep a record board near the computer where students can log their high scores. Competing against each other may make students more interested to play for a new minutes at a time, and less likely to disturb others in testing situations.

This searchable living history of Elizabethan England provides fascinating information about 16th century games, food, money, religion, fashion, and education. These individual glimpses combine to create a meaningful, non-political tapestry of life as lived 500 years ago. Add to a unit on Shakespeare or European history.

In the Classroom

Use this site on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start your study of Elizabethan England. The site provides an array of knowledge about the life of the average citizen in that world, which could be used perfectly to recreate that life in your classroom! Divide students into cooperative learning groups to explore the site. Have them design a themed party that will sport games, food and fashion from Elizabethan times - all of the information can be found on the site!

This collection of printable documents and PowerPoint shows provides elementary teachers with easy access to materials for reinforcing frequently used sight words. Includes vocabulary lists, flash cards, and a downloadable Dolch Word Book.

In the Classroom

Share the Dolch Words story on an interactive white board of projector, and allow students to take turns reading the lines. Be sure help your weaker readers and ESL students by sharing the vocabulary words prior to reading, either on a handout or by projecting on an interactive whiteboard and highlighting them in the text as you come to them. Practicing saying the words out loud can help students spot them quicker in the future. You can also use the printables of flashcards in a learning center or station, allowing students to practice with them individually or in groups.

If medieval English literature is part of your British Lit curriculum, you might want to send your students to this resource for a sampling of the sounds of "Middle English." Selected passages from the Canterbury Tales are read aloud by scholars of 14th and 15th Century English literature. Students can listen while following along with the text. Compare and contrast with modern English translations.

In the Classroom

Use the audio portions of this site as a learning center or station during a lesson or unit on Chaucer. Have students listen to the audio portions and respond or decipher their meaning on a graphic organizer. For help making easy graphic organizers, we recommend using Graphic Organizer Maker, reviewed here. Be sure to include headphones at the station to avoid students disrupting others!
