This college-level writing guide for history papers from Bowdoin College may be beyond the scope of some secondary students. But for those who can already compose a cogent paragraph, it offers great suggestions on research process and assembling a paper that uses primary resources. AP history and social studies teachers may want to review this one and suggest or adapt it for their students. There's a wealth of information here.

In the Classroom

Open this site on the interactive whiteboard or projector and have students read the information before beginning their first big research paper. (Teachers can also print the information, but why not save some trees?) The short introductory essay offers some great tips for paper writing and has reference points for students with more questions. Have students look at the rest of the information on their own or refer students with questions to it. Save this site as a favorite on the class wiki or webpage so students can access it both in and out of the classroom.

This RIF lesson is an entire unit based on Louis Sachar's award-winning book Holes. The unit includes a Scholastice Study Guide, puzzles, as well as other worksheets in PDF format.

In the Classroom

Start with the Study Guide (download well ahead of time) and pick and choose what you want to use from the activities starting on page 58. Find ready to print puzzles and other activities by going back to the RIF page for Holes. To engage students and enhance learning ask students to make a summarizing comic every few chapters using Make Beliefs Comix, reviewed here. It would be best to work as a class for the first chapter you summarize and use Printable Comic Strip Templates, reviewed here, as a rough draft before creating the Make Beliefs Comix.

Lewis Carroll sites are like the Cheshire Cat; you're never quite sure what's there. This one includes a number of academic sources, several of which deal with Carroll's mathematical background. You'll also find a variety of critical material on Carroll's various works, and the role of Alice and her friends in popular culture. There's plenty to explore here.

The Newseum offers this daily pictorial listing of headlines from major newspapers around the world. Click the thumbnail image of the front page for a larger view. Each front page is available as a printable PDF and also includes a link to the newspaper web site. Find lessons connected to Today's Front Pages: Today's Front Pages Lesson Plan, Photo Ethics, and Choose the News Gallery Guide.

In the Classroom

Beyond the obvious application for comparing treatment of news events around the country and the world, this site could also be used for writing, world language practice, a look at editorial choices, or other social studies applications. Include this resource in a media literacy unit on bias or during Newspapers in Education month. With elementary students, share many newspapers on a projector or interactive whiteboard as students identify the various elements of a newspaper article. The Lesson Plan link above contains and excellent poster link for familiarizing students with the elements that comprise the front page of a newspaper. Download it along with the lesson plan. The poster utilizes a sample front page from The Washington Post to illustrate how a front page is formatted. Have students analyze the sample front page by answering the suggested questions. Once students are familiar with the elements of a newspaper, extend their learning and challenge them to create their own class or school newspaper using Printing Press, reviewed here. If articles are too long for some readers, or if you are teaching summarizing skills consider using Skim.it, reviewed here, a Chrome extension that reduces articles into a 100-word summary.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

The Luminarium site provides a very nice collection of 17th century English literature, including poetry, in full-text. There is also biographical information on major authors, as well as a collection of web links for each author. We could do without the musical introductions, but they don't detract from the quality of this information.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on this time period within a Language Arts or Social Studies class. Create a "scavenger hunt" through the site, guiding students through the various authors and statesman that had lasting impact on literature. We recommend using a graphic organizer to guide students through the site, using a tool such as Mindomo, (reviewed here).

Teachers and parents will find these useful, but should note that archaic language of the late nineteenth century versions that appear here may prove troublesome. Still, this is a useful resource.

Here's a site that combines information about literary figures and their travels. The site blends background information on the lives of literary figures with descriptions of the places they lived and visited, creating a nice context for a study of the factors that influence an author's work. Secondary English teachers will find this an interesting resource for taking a new twist on a familiar author.

Byron was among the most famous of the English 'Romantic' poets; his contemporaries included Percy Shelley and John Keats. He was also a satirist whose poetry and personality captured the imagination of Europe. In addition to his poems, major works include Childe Harold's Pilgrimage (1812-18) and Don Juan (1819-24). This site offers biographical information and an overview of the author's major works.

In the Classroom

This is a great find for gifted students! The additional information on Byron, his life, works and contemporaries provides students with information they may not typically learn, or be expected to learn within the general classroom. Share this site with students working on reports on Lord Byron, or to students curious to know more about the famous poet.

Looking for a fun site students will enjoy visiting? The many interactives on this page is for you. Teachers will get loads of great teaching ideas by viewing the site and students will be inspired to write and illustrate their own ideas about this well loved story. You can take quizzes, complete crossword puzzles, and more. The Book Trailer is hosted on YouTube, if your district blocks YouTube it may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

With older students you may want to introduce Charlotte's Web with the Book Trailer on your intreactive whiteboard or with a projector. Read aloud some of the other author's comments about the book. Include a link to games on classroom computers and your class website for students to access during learning centers or at home. Use Flip, reviewed here, to enhance student learning throughout your Charlotte's Web unit by asking what their favorite activity was and why or by asking clarifying questions (or both) and have students post video responses.
