The American Foundation for the Blind has created Braille Bug to explain Braille - what it is and how it works - to the sighted world. This site would be a great introduction for students who have family, friends, or classmates who are blind. There's a very complete introduction to the Braille alphabet, along with a printable Braille letter guide.

In the Classroom

This would also be a great stop in a study of disabilities and adaptive strategies.

This unit offers 11th ad 12th graders a chance to work with poetry from other eras and decipher its meaning through the lens of their own culture. Poet Laureate Billy Collins has created a collection of 180 poems - a poem a day - for the school year. This Library of Congress site offers the poems themselves, tips on reading poetry aloud, and information on poetry sources and permissions. It's an interesting collection that could add variety to any middle or high school poetry study.
This site includes advertising.

Use these poems as a warm up to start class. Have kids analyze the poem to find symbolism, meter, rhyme, etc.

This is an interesting compilation of American folktales, each retold by the author. The tales are sorted into thematic groups - states, tall tales, ethnic tales, etc. There is also an alphabetical index of stories. While we cannot guarantee the political correctness of all these, they would be a nice resource for any study of folktales or American growth and development.

This site from the University of Virginia is a welcome addition to the general lack of good Twain material on the web. The site concentrates on Twain's career and the manner in which Sam Clemens turned Twain into an institution. There are also links to critical information and e-texts of Twain's major works, along with illustrations.

In the Classroom

Good site for lesson ideas, or for independent use by students. Bookmark this site for biographical information about Mark Twain for student projects and papers. Check out the links to his writings as well, available as complete texts on the internet.

While this exercise is from a site on science and optics, the KWL strategy - a structured form of questioning and answering - is applicable to the study of many topics other than science. Teachers will like this one because it outlines multiple strategies for both inquiry and presentation, giving examples from science, literature, and art.

In the Classroom

If you're not familiar KWL, this is a great starting point.

Here's a lesson unit that lets students design a perfect mate, then compare it with their parent's concepts. Sounds strange, but this teacher-tested lesson has proven immensely popular with teachers, parents, and students alike. This lesson plan, one of TeachersFirst's long-popular resources, was one of the winners in a lesson plan contest sponsored by TeachersFirst. TeachersFirst editors have added technology options where appropriate.

In the Classroom

The survey handout included in this lesson makes it a perfect starter for the study of Romeo and Juliet. As you read the play, you could extend the idea by having students complete the same survey as Montague or Capulet parents!
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.
