This very useful site provides information on Romantic-period literature and culture. Its resources continue to expand. An interesting feature is the Villa Diodati, a five -room MOOspace. Named for the house rented by Lord Byron and the Shelleys in the summer of 1816, the space provides for panel discussions and conversations. The Romantic Circles site already provides conferences, publications, scholarly resources, reviews and electronic editions, with more features on the way.

Though it is no longer actively maintained, this site includes some entertaining ways to hook students on Shakespeare, such as Today in Shakespeare History, a daily calendar with a page of quotes from Shakespeare for every day of the year. On March 15, read the famous lines from Julius Caesar! Use the magnetic poetry page to find new ways to put Elizabethan English words into original poems on your computer screen.

In the Classroom

Save this site as a favorite and use it as a learning center or station - in particular, the Poetry Machine during a unit on writing poetry. A very creative and fun way to help students get their creative juices flowing. A great resource for a Language Arts and Literature classroom.

This is the web home for Harvard University's Chaucer courses. It offers interpretive information and historical context for each section of Canterbury Tales, along with synopses of the various sections. Interesting, useful information for motivated students.

In the Classroom

Use the "teach yourself Chaucer" section of this website to show students how Middle English was spoken, and what Chaucer's work would have sounded like to his contemporaries. In this section are quick "lessons," aka brief excerpts explaining pronunciation in various parts of the book. Use the language charts over the interactive whiteboard to quickly explain the difference between Modern and Middle English. This would be great in an English or Social Studies class studying Chaucer and the Middle Ages.

This site attempts to "sift and sort" the vast amount of Chaucer material on the net. There's background, bibliography, biography and commentary with links and outlines on the Chaucer canon.

In the Classroom

This is a great source for students research or teachers idea-gathering. The material is quite scholarly, and the links will take you to interesting places. This site is currently being updated, so be sure to check in and see what new updates take place. Share the site in class for research or on your teacher web page.

This site purports to have all things Robert: poetry, history, commentary. Some of the content may be a bit steep for students, but this is a very complete collection of information about one of Scotland's finest.

In the Classroom

Save this site as a favorite and use it as a learning center or station during a unit on the 18th century in Europe, or specifically Scotland. Teachers can either select specific poems students can analyze or have students peruse and find their own. A site like this could be used in a history classroom in a discussion of the culture and life at the time, or in a Language Arts class during a study of poetry.

This site ontains much helpful information on Jane Austen and her times. There are links to e-texts of various novels, including juvenilia, and links to discussions of novels, letters, quotes, biographies, on-line academic articles and info on the Jane Austen Centre and Museum, and a section for Author's Like Jane. You'll even find a Regency Period Fashion section.

In the Classroom

Though Jane Austen wrote only six novels, there are enough to give your students a choice. Allow students to read the book of their choice individually, in pairs, or small groups. Have them choose the book they want to read by going through the book titles and reading the first couple of pages for the books; there are actually two pages for each chapter in the books, but reading the first pages for two or three chapters should be enough to pique their interest in one of the books. After the students have read their books have them put together a presentation using Sway, reviewed here. Allow them to choose the format with which they wish to present the book to their classmates, they can choose an interactive poster, brochure, newsletter, and others.

Information, criticism and links on the works of Chilean writer Isabel Allende. The site contains pictures and biography of the author of such works as "The House of Spirits" and "Fortune's Daughter."

In the Classroom

This site is perfect for literature circles! There are many books from which to choose and each one has a summary and excerpt. After reading some of the summaries, have student literature groups choose the book they want to read and present to the class. For the presentations, give the students a choice of multimedia tools using a resource such as Genially, reviewed here. Students can choose to present their book using interactive images, infographics, charts, and more; they can insert maps, surveys, video, and audio.

In the Classroom

In a class where textbooks may be short this is an excellent site to insure everyone has access to "The Tempest." This would also be useful for a class reading of the play. Open the site on the interactive whiteboard or projector, and click on the link that allows you to display the full play on one fluid page. From this point, assign students parts and let them read aloud. Just make sure to keep up with the scrolling as students read!
