Includes translations of many Germanic-rooted myths, legends and stories. The texts are categorized. Also gives many additional links to other tales and legends. Excellent source for comparison studies of specific tales such as Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Red Riding Hood, etc.

In the Classroom

Ask students to choose a favorite tale and record and share the stories with tools such as Zeemaps, reviewed here. Zeemaps allows students to create audio recordings AND choose a location (on a map) where the story takes place. Challenge cooperative learning groups to modernize one of the tales and create a podcast by using sites such as podOmatic, reviewed here. Help students create a checklist or rubric to use for self-evaluation or peer review. Use a tool like Quick Rubric, reviewed here, for the checklist and rubric. Use this same document to help students make constructive suggestions for story revisions. Use an online tool such as the 2 and 3 Circle Interactive Venn Diagrams, reviewed here. to create a visual comparison of different folk tales and story patterns.

Though dated, these books on this list have characters who never age. Try reading a few aloud to your class, then let students choose one they would like to read.

There's far more than the usual author-site goodies at this British site devoted to author Roald Dahl. There are lesson plans to download based on several of Dahl's books and a special set of six lesson plans for Pre School. There is lots of interesting activities for students, and the material is well-written.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of Roald Dahls lesson plans to delight your primary and Pre-K students while they are learning! There are so many entertaining learning activities that you may want to review the story later in the year and use the literacy activities as review and reinforcement, tool.

Comments

This is a great resource for teachers using Roald Dahl's books in the classroom or for librarians leading a book club! There are lesson plans you can download for his books. I expected to see interactive ways for kids to explore the plots of the books as well. However, this website doesn't offer those. Still, this is a nice website for teachers! Laurie, , Grades: 0 - 12

One of the faculty Miami University of Ohio has created an on-line database designed to help teachers build thematic units for young children around picture books. The only user interface is a fairly sparse search engine which prompts with selections of keywords for each of the various categories. While awkward at first, this becomes more intuitive as you use it. Search results include bibliographic information and short plot summaries. Once you get the hang of it, this could be a nice way to build thematic units for younger children.

In the Classroom

Use the book reviews on this site for recommendations to parents who want suggestions on outside or summer readings. The lists are separated by topics, concepts, and skills for building content area reading across all academic subjects. You can also browse by categories, abstracts, or an A-Z list.

Here's a new twist - a site that lets users enter in the kind of literature they want to read about: country, historical period, plot type, character types - and then returns a list of children's books that meet those criteria. This is a great resource for finding reading material to complement curricular content, or to simply help a reluctant reader find a book he or she will really love.

In the Classroom

Use this site as a way to pull in literature into a non-language arts classroom. The search bar is a great way to find materials that could compliment your curriculum in a science or social studies classroom.

Here's a collection of many of Andersen's stories and fairy tales, many with the original artwork. Most of these stories are short, so they're easily printed out for reading to your class. The site isn't fancy, but the information is easily accessible.

In the Classroom

Use this site as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on a projector. The site has literally tons of Andersen's stories, and could be used to introduce students to short story writing. Be sure help your weaker readers and ESL students by sharing the vocabulary words prior to reading, either on a handout or by projecting on an interactive whiteboard and highlighting them in the text as you come to them.
