Captivate and challenge students while maintaining quiet times in your classroom with Bouncy Balls! Turn on the microphone to capture sound; the quieter your environment is, the more settled the balls remain. If there is more noise, the balls start flying and jumping around the screen. In addition to bouncy balls, choose from bubbles, eyeballs, and smiley face icons. There is also a full screen option. Our editors had some trouble trying to figure out HOW to enable the microphones. Here are some tips that we learned. If you are using Firefox or Chrome, you must allow pop-ups. You should get a message in the narrow band below the address bar asking you to "Allow Microphone" for this site. At the time of this review, this site was not working properly on the Safari browser. Even so, this is still one site you will want to explore and "have a ball." Unfortunately, this site does not work on mobile devices.

Use Bouncy Balls during silent reading time, on reentering the classroom after lunch, recess or special classes or anytime you are trying to maintain quiet. Graph the length of time balls lay still; then challenge your class to improve their time each day or reach a set goal. Use with preK students during nap/quiet time as a visual reminder for quiet. Print your guide, have the class sign it, and post it in the classroom as a visual reminder to their commitment to digital citizenship. Imagine a one-stop site for creating, editing, and distributing your school supply list and wish list to parents and others. That's TeacherLists. Create an account, find your school, and begin a supply list or wish list. Personalize your list with a short welcome statement, if desired. Choose from categories to add items. Categories include most popular items as well as specific items such as paper, pencils, or health and cleaning supplies. Include the quantity for each student, add a short note, and save when complete. Share your final list through email, direct url link, or several social networking links.

Create a TeacherLists account for your building or teaching team and distribute your supply list or a wish list in an easy to find format for parents to access anytime and anywhere. Share what your class specifically needs to be ready for the start of school or a new marking period. Include the links to your lists on your class web page. Library/media specialists can share a schoolwide list to keep the media center well stocked with supplies. Art teachers can request the craft items and supplies they need. Adobe Firefly uses generative AI (artificial intelligence) and simple prompts to create images, text effects, and color palettes fueled by your imagination. Visit Firefly's Gallery for inspiration, or begin your journey by selecting from several options. Options include text-to-image, generative fill, text effects, regenerative color, 3D-to-image, and text-to-vector. Additional options are in Beta. After choosing an option and signing in to your account, follow the directions to add a prompt with what you wish to create. Use Firefly's filters and editing options to select one of the generated images and fine-tune it to your desired appearance. When satisfied with your creation, select the "more options" icon to download, copy, or copy the link to your image or save images to your library for later access.
In the Classroom
Use Firefly to create images for many different classroom uses to engage students and extend learning. Use the text effects feature to create text to teach letters or words. An example would be making the word "apple" and filling it with apples to teach beginning letter sounds to students using imagery. Use the text-to-image feature to create images for students to use with creative writing projects or to visualize a scene in a story. Edit images using the Generative Fill option to remove unwanted items or add new items. Edit an image to demonstrate different art styles when teaching students about artists. Past offerings range from classics like Black Beauty and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz to contemporary offerings like The Red Pyramid and the Wimpy Kid series. You might also enjoy interviews of some of these authors. Type in something like "Questions for the Author" in the search bar to find a list of interviews. Certain segments of this site provide audio clips to enjoy. You can also subscribe to one of the many NPR podcasts, a great option for the BYOD classroom or your school library/media center.

Share an animated GIF to get student's attention! A cat reading a book is one way to begin reading time! Show any science concept a student should look at several times to see every aspect of the event, better yet, let students create an animated GIF using their own pictures to demonstrate the concept or show the steps of an experiment. Do you want to reveal portions of a video outlining the travels of historical expeditions, addition of the states to the US, or any other historical event captured in a video? HyperDocs is a free resource library for digital lesson plan templates for all subjects and grade levels available to use without registration. Most lessons use Google tools, including Google Docs, reviewed here, Google Slides, reviewed here, and Google Jamboard, reviewed here. Begin your search by exploring the basic templates featured based on different lesson models, or use the keyword search bar to find specific topics. Next, filter down results by grade level, lesson subject, and focus area. Be sure to click the "apply filters" box after making your choices. Each hyperdoc includes a preview for viewing the document; choose the link to "make a copy" to copy and personalize as desired. Although registration isn't required to access and copy the hyperdocs provided on the site, creating an account offers you the opportunity to receive notification of the latest additions to the site.

The Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature is a digitized collection of a variety of children's literature from approximately 1896 to 1943. Use filters to narrow content by year, genre, publisher, and more. Some items in the collection offer different publications of the same text. Each thumbnail links to images includes the publication date and publisher information.
In the Classroom
Share older versions of children's classic books with students to compare with modern versions including print books and online videos. This literature collection is perfect for use with studies of the late 1800's and early 1900's as a primary source of information. Begin with the introduction and background knowledge information to understand the importance of teaching students how to identify and use nonfiction text features. Next, this article provides many activities to guide students in understanding nonfiction text features. The final portion of this resource includes extension activities that encourage students to think about text features differently and encourage critical thinking skills.

Share this article and the included activities with peers as part of your professional development activities. Work with your peers to identify specific nonfiction texts to use during your lessons. One excellent resource for finding short, nonfiction articles is Newsela, reviewed here. Assign articles to students through Newsela and differentiate information based on individual student needs. This readaloud collection, designed to encourage boys to read, is part of the Help I lost my library/media specialist series. Although nothing can replace the specialized knowledge of a teacher-librarian, this collection of books and before/after reading activities was created by an experienced elementary library/media specialist. Read about what interests young male readers and find ways to make reading part of their lives even if they avoid fiction. The list of books to read aloud and accompanying activities include Lexiles where available.
In the Classroom
Read the article to remind yourself what interests male readers and consider some of the ideas for launching special activities directed specifically toward boys.
