The Guide to Writing is a free online course presented through nine modules. A sample of the modules includes grammar, sentence structure, and punctuation, but there are many others. Each section comprises from seven to approximately forty topics. Each section explains the content; many have practice activities and short videos.
In the Classroom
Although this is a complete course, it isn't necessary to follow the order shared on the site. Instead, pick and choose individual modules or topics to use as desired. For example, if your class needs a short reteaching activity using parenthesis, choose that lesson for students to view and complete the practice activity. This site is also an excellent resource to share with students on your website or include with your other shared sites for students to use in school or at home. Use a curation tool such as Netboard, reviewed here, to gather and share web resources for students to find easily. Use the lessons as a model, and ask students to create writing lessons of their own to address common writing errors found in your classroom. For example, ask students to create explainer videos using Clipchamp, reviewed here, to share tips and ideas for using commas correctly or citing sources in research papers.You must be registered and logged in to add items to your favorites.

For example, select "Pick a Thing" to learn about and develop an understanding of current ed-tech terms and practices. Then, select the PD Modules option to engage in personalized learning through completing the self-paced learning modules. Finally, use the search feature to find specific content or scroll down toward the bottom of the page to discover topics by ISTE Standards.
In the Classroom
Bookmark and save this site as a professional development resource both personally and when learning with peers. The learning modules are beneficial even after receiving other learning opportunities to refresh and understand content in a new way. The learning modules also offer correlations to several different technology frameworks, including SAMR, TPack, and TripleE. Use Deep Nostalgia Photos to upload and animate images of historical figures to use with multimedia projects. Include animated images in student-created projects created with Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here. Share images as a schema activator when introducing a new unit; for example, find a free Creative Commons image for Harriet Tubman and use it to create an animated image when introducing a unit on the Underground Railroad. You can also choose the highlight color, background color, font size and "word management." Word management allows you the choice of words being forward and backward, diagonal, up and down, and more. Options allow for the puzzle to be played online or printed out.

Use this resource to help students review spelling words or other content related vocabulary. Change the font to a larger size and print it out for young children or students that have vision issues. Have students create word searches for other students to take. Zight (formerly known as CloudApp) is a screen recording tool with features for collaboration and integration with other cloud-based tools. After downloading Zight, follow the directions to install and use it on your device. Use the included tools to trim and cut videos or create GIFs. When finished, save and generate a link to your clipboard. Other features include the ability to do real-time annotations while you are recording your screen and editing tools to trim and cut recordings. Zight integrates with Slack, Microsoft Teams, and others. Free accounts offer one user up to twenty-five items with ninety-second recording times.
In the Classroom
Download and use Zight in many ways in all classrooms. Make screen recordings to share how-to information on navigating websites. Use the annotation tools to highlight important information and the location of website tools. Have students use Zight to share their screens when facing difficulty using sites. Create collections of videos for students to access, including instructions for logging in to various websites, searching effectively, or sharing information digitally. Lessonstream offers 70+ English lessons originally intended for ELL/ESL learners. They are divided by ability levels, listed according to topic, language aim, learner type, and lesson time. Each lesson includes images or a video, preparation tasks, text prompts and then the lesson plan. Many include additional printouts to supplement the lesson. Explore the site in several ways: browse all lessons page by page, time needed for lesson, learner type, main activity, language aim, or materials. Download lessons using the PDF link provided with each lesson. "Pinned" images provide age level information, activity type, and language skill addressed for each activity. Most lessons are aimed at middle school learners and above. However, there are several for younger students and worth taking a look if you teach younger grades.

Send simple invitations or surveys with Yarp. Choose the type, name it, add more information, and choose responses such as Yes/No or other clever possibilities. Click "Let me see it" to view the survey. Send the link to your Yarplet to others. No membership is required to create Yarplets or to vote! Click "Save my Yarplets" for instructions to keep track of your polls and invitations when moving from one device to another. This tool will work on any mobile browser.

Use this tool anywhere a quick, simple poll is required (on any device!). Share polls on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge. This is great as you start a new unit and ask questions about the material. Discuss in groups why students would choose a particular answer to uncover misconceptions. Use for daily quiz questions as a formative assessment. Use a class account to have student groups alternate to create the new poll for the next day. Place a poll on your teacher web page as a homework inspiration or to ask parent questions to increase involvement. Older students may want to include polls on their student blogs to increase reader engagement. Have students create polls for the start of project presentations. Scribe is a must-have Chrome browser extension for every classroom for creating step-by-step guides for many different uses. After installing the extension and creating an account, activate a Scribe recording to create and share step-by-step tutorials that follow your activity on the computer. Some examples shared include how to strikethrough text in a Google document, how to create a GIF from a YouTube video, and how to merge mail in Gmail. To create a Scribe, click the record button on your browser or Chrome extension and navigate to your starting page. Scribe records each of your actions with a small screenshot and creates a series of steps that guides viewers through the process shared. When finished, click the record button again to stop recording. Your Scribe appears on your account dashboard and offers options to edit the contents. After saving, use the provided link to share with others, embed using the shared code, or download it as a PDF.
In the Classroom
The number of uses in classrooms for Scribe are countless! Use Scribe to create guides for students to log in to software, games, and computer programs. Create step-by-step guides for students on how to add or edit images in tools such as Google Slides, reviewed here or Genially, reviewed here. Ask students to include Scribe within multimedia presentations to demonstrate information such as how to search Google for Creative Commons Images or how to narrow searches to fit into a custom time frame. Create Scribes to share with parents for use at home as a guide for accessing online tools needed for homework or practice.
