PBS Kids has a variety of reading games that are entertaining and educational for kids of all ages. The games help kids improve their reading skills, including phonics, vocabulary, and comprehension. Students will be engaged in practicing essential reading skills with familiar characters from PBS Kids. The main reading games page may be updated or changed frequently, so bookmark your class favorites!
In the Classroom
Teachers can project the games onto a screen and have the class play together. Playing a game to introduce a concept engages kids in reading and reinforces basic reading skills. Working in small groups or pairs encourages collaboration, communication, and peer learning. Students can help each other with challenging tasks. Giving students time to play the games independently is an excellent way to practice reading at their own pace and work on specific skills they need help with. Create a survey as an exit slip to identify student understanding or misunderstandings. Use a poll on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start your study by asking questions about the material. Discuss in groups why those in class would choose a particular answer to uncover misconceptions. Use for Daily quiz questions to gain knowledge of student understanding and a means of formative assessment. Create a question that matches the day's lesson to determine how well students are able to solve a similar problem. Use the survey to collect data from students for use in a Math class (such as calculating means and medians) or in a Social Sciences/Psychology class to determine trends and opinions. The background section covers the history of poetry, from epic poems of the ancient Greeks to modern free verse, addressing complex themes. The activities sections provide suggestions for poetry books and activities. Further down the page, the extensions share resources and ideas for students to create and share poems. Information includes correlation to ISTE and AASL standards.

Join Martha (the dog) from the book and animated children's series, Martha Speaks. This interactive website focuses on vocabulary and word usage. The site includes interactives, printables, videos, and "Martha's Stories" for students to explore. Make newspapers, dog tags, vocabulary word pictures, and more. Vocabulary introduced are not necessarily sight words, yet specialized content area words. Apply and learn new vocabulary in a wide variety of interactive ways. Some game features require Shockwave and/or a webcam. Don't worry. It does not keep your picture.
In the Classroom
Intrigue your students to follow the dog, Martha, into new vocabulary learning. Share a book (or video of the show) with your students before introducing this site. Students from Kindergarten through second grade will benefit from the variety of learning activities. Add this site to your centers for an engaging way to learn vocabulary. Certify'em is an add-on to Google Forms that automatically generates personalized certificates. Follow the instructions to install and authorize the add-on before using it. After installation, personalize Certify'em within any form to create a certificate upon completion of a minimum score. Free accounts allow members to make their templates or choose from those shared on the site. Your Certify'em account also maintains a record of all exam attempts.
In the Classroom
Certify'em is an excellent addition to every Google Forms members' toolbox. Create and share certificates with students for successful completion of quizzes and tests. Use Certify'em as a means for differentiating instruction by allowing students to take a pre-assessment test before starting a new unit. If they obtain a certificate, offer an alternative extended learning activity. Unsplash, the amazing site for finding free, high-quality images, has curated several collections of photos for use in educational settings. Topics include health, nature, politics and current events, and much more. Browse through any collection to find and download images. Although attribution isn't required, it is encouraged. Include the provided attribution text when using images for any project. Registration isn't required; however, it allows you to save images and create and share collections.

Use images from Unsplash as creative writing prompts. Have students create a multimedia presentation using Presentious, reviewed here. This site allows you to narrate a picture. Challenge students to find a photo (legally permitted to be reproduced) and then narrate it as a news report. In the Classroom
This site is a great addition to any world language, history, music, English, or science class. Use the oral history section to hear stories from Holocaust survivors. Listen to accents from around the world. Have you ever wanted to know what a cicada sounds like? Use the recordings from the nature and environment section. Science and music teachers can use the site to show how sound waves look. Use the site to demonstrate how to create an oral history. Then have cooperative learning groups create podcasts demonstrating their understanding of a particular topic you are studying. Use a site such as PodOmatic (reviewed here). In world language classes, have students explore locations to learn more about the sound of that country. BiblioNasium is a READING social platform for learners ages six to twelve. Students, teachers, and parents all have their own login on the site. Students need a parent (or legal guardian) to give permission to use this site. Teachers and parents can set reading goals and rate and recommend books. There are some similarities to Goodreads reviewed here in that this is a reading club where you can read reviews about books, write reviews, and rate books, too. Students will treasure finding new books recommended by others. Reluctant readers will become avid readers because it is easy to find topics of interest. Flash is used only for the introductory video.

EZVid is a video screencasting tool that captures everything that appears on your Windows computer screen. Once recorded, you can edit videos, add voice, add text, draw directly on the screen image, or control playback speed. Be sure to watch the video tutorial for all features. Upload finished videos directly to YouTube. Once uploaded, share using social networking links. At the time of this review, this tool was not compatible with a MAC. The website does offer some suggestions to MAC users (such as using Bootcamp). If your school blocks YouTube, you will not be able to use this site while at school.
