Materials include images and data from across Smithonian's varied resources, including museums, the National Zoo, research centers, and more. Find information with keywords in the search bar or explore featured platforms such as Smithsonian Learning Lab, 3D Voyager, or Developer Tools. After obtaining search results, use filters to narrow down the results to fit your needs. For a better understanding of how others use downloaded materials, explore the remixes found on the site.

Think of Smithsonian access as your virtual museum of downloads to use without copyright restrictions. Search and find images to use for any need. Try activities such as the Elephant and Piggie Dance Game or the coloring page of the month. Watch video interviews of the author explaining his background and how some of the book characters were created. Information for teachers includes posters and guides for teaching with the books that include pre-reading activities, discussion questions, and hidden information found in the illustrations (see "Grownup stuff"). In the Classroom
Be sur to explore the "grownup stuff" area for activity ideas. After reading a Mo Willems book, show a video interview on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) to help students understand the work that goes into creating books and developing characters. Use the site when teaching an author study unit on Mo Willems books. Posters available on the site are perfect for use on classroom bulletin boards along with displaying student writing.

Find a wealth of resources for using drama in the ESL/ELL classroom. The same activities can also be useful for other subjects. The improvisation resources are especially exciting, offering definitions, examples of activities, links, and visual examples of how you can use improvisational techniques. In addition, information and activities on using plays, process drama, and reader's theater for language teaching abound. Use play writing for another aspect of language teaching. There is a complete curriculum for offering an independent class in drama for ESL/ELL students. Although this site may appear plain vanilla, there are sprinkles throughout, making this tool very valuable and informative.
In the Classroom
Use this site as the starting point for group projects like having the students write and produce their own play(s). This is a great find for gifted students as well as students studying any modern language as the play writing and acting techniques can easily be adapted. Challenge cooperative learning groups to create videos of the plays they write and produce then edit and save them using using wevideo, reviewed here. Castbox provides tools for creating and sharing podcasts. First, create a free account, then begin by entering the Creator Studio. Next, select the upload icon to drag and drop your media file in a supported format of up to 400M. When the file begins uploading, complete the areas provided to include basic information for your files, such as a title, description, and publication date and time. Castbox also offers an option to upload an image for your cover design. When finished, select Publish to complete the creation of your podcast. Finally, click on your podcast to listen and share using the link or social media links provided.

In the Classroom
Castbox is an excellent podcast-sharing option for simple podcasts or when sharing audio recordings that have already been edited, for example, using editing tools on your computer. Create regular or special podcasts to share on your class web page or wiki. Are you looking for even more ideas? Record class assignments or directions. Record story time or a reading excerpt for younger ones to listen to at a computer center AND from home, adding a touch of blended learning to your classroom! Have readers (perhaps older buddies) enhance their learning and build fluency by recording selected passages for your non-readers. Launch a service project for your fifth or sixth graders to record stories for the kindergarten to use in their reading and listening center. Challenge students to create "you are there" recordings as "eyewitnesses" to historical or current events. Make a weekly class podcast, with students taking turns writing and sharing the "Class News," encourage and extend learning and have students create radio advertisements for concepts studied in class (Buy Dynamic DNA!). Invite students to write and record their own stories or poetry in dramatic readings. World language students or beginning readers could record their fluency by reading passages. Allow parents to hear their child's progress reading aloud, etc. Compare world language, speech articulation, or reading fluency at two points during the year. Challenge your Shakespeare students to record a soliloquy. Write and record a poem for Father's or Mother's Day (or other special events) and send the URL as a gift to that special person. If you have gifted students who lean toward the dramatic, this tool is simple enough for them to create dramatic mini-casts without needing any additional tools. However, each project is flexible enough to customize it to your needs. Sign up for their newsletter to stay updated about new project development. You can even suggest a project for them to create through the Community Wish List.

There are a variety of projects presented at different grade levels. Don't hesitate to look at one that seems beyond or below your grade level. They are easily adaptable. For instance, the one by Biz World created for third through fifth grade students to experience entrepreneurship can easily be adapted to a product that high school students might be interested in such as earrings, designing a class ring, or a video explaining how to conquer levels in a video game.

Use this interactive to create a "race against time" newsfeed that challenges students to take notes efficiently. Follow the directions to create a list of items to add to your newsfeed, then add images if desired. Your newsfeed automatically plays and advances through your list; however, it also provides an option to pause during the feed. When finished, use the URL or QR code to share your Newsfeed Generator or use the embed code to embed to your website.

Add the Newsfeed Generator to many classroom lessons. Share a newsfeed on your whiteboard to engage students at the beginning of a new unit. Provide a set of clues and use their responses to gauge prior understanding. Create newsfeeds to announce field trips, locate areas of interest for social studies lessons, or point out locations in novels and other reading material. Have students create their own newsfeed as an activity for sharing a favorite location, where they were born, or to begin a biography of a famous person or series of historical events such as the civil rights movement. In science class, have students create a newsfeed sharing traits of different habitats or environmental disaster sites. After viewing a short introduction and background information, visit the activities portion of the site to Read and Do activities based on books featuring Malala Yousafzai, Jane Goodall, Greta Thunberg, and other women changemakers. Extension ideas include how to become a changemaker, a biographer, compare women changemakers, and learn about good trouble. Information includes correlation to ISTE and AASL standards.

Take advantage of the book suggestions on this page to find additions to your classroom library. Consider adding women as changemakers at one of the stations when doing station rotations.
