The Children's Television Network has created a delightful set of learning activities that strengthen skills in letter recognition, decoding, listening, problem-solving, and more. Led by the familiar cast of characters from Sesame Street, your youngest students will love to explore Elmo's World, the Game Room, and participate in interactive stories. The links include games, stories, art, music, mail, and Elmo's World. At the Games link you will find science activities about the weather, counting challenges, classification activities, musical fun, and numerous other educational activities. This site truly has something for all primary elementary classroom.

This site provides practice with exploring area and perimeter by either allowing the computer to randomly draw a shape on a grid or by creating a space of your own on the grid. Choices are given to allow for questions about area or perimeter, or for both. To check an answer, simply click on the "check answer" button for immediate feedback. Sessions can be scored, or scoring can be turned off to allow for easier exploration. The learner portion of the site provides a quick explanation of how objects can have similar areas but much different perimeters. The instructor portion provides links to standards, some textbook links, a printable with exploration questions, classroom discussion information, and links to similar resources.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then have students explore this site independently or in small groups to complete the exploration questions provided on the site. Have students create their own representations similar to the ones found on the site to be solved by classmates. Create a link on classroom computers to be used as a center. Drag images into the window and choose the collage shape (heart, characters, animals, and more) or create and customize your own shape. Collages do not show the company watermark, and you can export them to Photoshop. Click Help from the top menu bar and follow the demo video for tips and tricks.

This applet is perfect for practicing finding the area and perimeter of regular and irregular shapes. After a shape is shown, there are boxes to input the answer to the area and perimeter of the provided shape. Options are also provided to adjust the size of shapes, to allow only rectangular shapes, and to allow scoring. The learner portion of the site provides an overview of area and perimeter. Be sure to check out the instructor section for links to standards, information for classroom use, standards addressed, and links to similar resources. There is also a printable exploration questions worksheet that can be used in the classroom.

Engage your students by bringing technology into geometry. Introduce the concepts of angle measurement, area, perimeter, 3D shapes, rotation, translation, and symmetry as a whole group on your interactive whiteboard. Have students practice at centers during your unit. While preparing for summative assessments, assign for homework to practice. Frustrated when trying to transfer files from one device to another? This resource is a free service that easily transfers files between devices without creating any kind of account. Use this resource in Opera, Chrome, or Firefox (not Safari or Internet Explorer!). It will work on your laptop, desktop, tablet, or mobile device. Please note: both devices must be connected to the same wireless network. Simply drag files into ShareDrop on one device and then open it on the other. For users familiar with AirDrop on Apple products, this tool looks and works similarly.
In the Classroom
This would be a good tool to use in a computer lab or with laptop carts, iPads, or Chromebooks where students don't have email addresses or Google Accounts for sharing work with their teachers or each other. Students and teachers simply go to the ShareDrop site. When students are ready to share their work with their teachers, they can drag it into the ShareDrop page on their laptops, desktops, or tablets. For those interested in security, files are not actually uploaded to a server. Instead, ShareDrop is a peer to peer connection. Teachers can "push out" files to students quickly and easily using this tool. During curriculum development and other professional development activities, members of a specific department (or even school-wide) can share resources and documents easily to each other. This math site is a MUST SEE for teachers of all grade levels. Much of this site is designed for K-8 teachers, but there are a few activities for the high school grades. Although the site is mainly a drill and practice, it offers such an array of topics and levels that there is something for everyone here (and it is terrific for differentiating lessons in the classroom). Sample topics include roman numerals, Algebra II, pre-algebra, measurement, absolute value, early childhood math, telling time, money, place value, fractions, decimals, mixed operations, and more! And did we mention, each topic includes rich, colorful interactives for students to practice skills! Most topics also include options to specify content (for example, choosing to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division). fun activities for all levels!

Shikaku Madness is a logic-based puzzle where you attempt to cover a grid with rectangles. Use the numeric clues on the grid to solve the puzzle. Tap and drag on the grid to create rectangles that don't overlap and contain the number of squares in the clue. Choose from four levels of difficulty when attempting puzzles.

Shikaku Madness is an excellent addition to classroom bookmarks for practicing multiplication, working with arrays, developing problem-solving skills, and using logic. Encourage students to work up to the next level and become an expert in Shikaku. Share a link to the site on your class website for students to access at home. Encourage Shikaku "experts" in your class to share their methods for completing each puzzle with other students. Transform learning by challenging students to create a video demonstrating their process in puzzle solving using a tool such as Free Screen Recorder Online, reviewed here, or Screencastify (Chrome app), reviewed here. Short Answer is an online tool designed for K-12 classrooms to give students peer feedback. To use it, you need to create an account and set up a question or writing prompt for your students. You can also upload a file if needed. Choose feedback criteria various options, including more detailed or creative ones, or add your suggestions for feedback. Once you are done, save your question or launch the activity. Three activity options are available: All In, Pair It, and Battle Royal. In the All In option, all responses are visible and receive feedback. In Pair It, the whole class compares the same set of responses. And in Battle Royal, students vote for the most robust response until only one remains. Additional settings are available for each activity to set the time allowed and options for text and images. Students join using the code created for each activity and are given code names to provide anonymity during the activity. Teachers see student names on their teacher screen and download responses. After receiving student responses, teachers can select entries to be included in the feedback activity based on the activity chosen.

Be sure to visit the Teacher Resources in Short Answer to find many ideas and tutorials for using this feedback tool. Resources include standards-aligned guides for using Short Answer with any topic or curriculum. The guides provide tips for creating effective questions, suggestions, and examples for use during different stages of lessons. Have students choose any place, then post the link to it on a blog, wiki, or website, and write a description of it. Describe what they would see out of their window, create a story about what they hear or see, or describe their family and what's inside of the house. Research the history of the area to determine how it may have been different in the past. Of course you will went to avoid posting personal information on the web, but students could write fictional stories or keep personal information out of their writings. Describe the wildlife (plant or animal) that exists in their area. Describe the community of people in the area or an important neighbor and why they are important. Create a persuasive essay why their house (or school) is the best, friendliest, etc. in the area. ShowMe is an open learning community where you can learn or teach any subject. Explore topics such as math, science, world languages, social studies, art, and more. Explore the links on the home page; results are divided into subtopics. Click Learn - teachers may be especially interested in the Common Core Lessons available through a link at the bottom of the page. On that page is where you'll find a search bar, too. Creating a ShowMe of your own requires logging in or a download of the app from the iTunes store (and an iPad). The download is free. If you are worried about students seeing questionable material, you may want to provide the link directly to the video you wish students to view. At the time of this review, all material appeared appropriate.
In the Classroom
Extend your blended learning classroom by sharing the ShowMe site (or individual videos) with your students to access at home for homework help using the Facebook, X, (was Twitter), email, or embed link on each video. List the ShowMe link on your class website. View tutorials on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) as a whole class. Encourage students to share links to specific videos they find helpful on a "Video Reviews" page of your class wiki. For a very real challenge, have students create their own simple review videos using the ShowMe app on iPads (if available) then embed them on your class wiki for a year-to-year student-made study guide! Use this interactive (and entertaining) site to excite even the youngest students about science! There is so much to explore at this site. Sid, the Science Kid, mixes science with humor so be prepared for some giggles. The site features video clips, interactive educational games, a printable coloring book (which can also be read online), and lesson ideas (see the "Parents and Teachers" link). Examples of topics include the effects of heat, health, measurement, the five senses, and many others.
In the Classroom
The possibilities at this site are endless. Make your first stop at the Parents and Teachers link. You may find a lesson plan or even short video to share with your class. Be sure to save this site in your favorites. Explore this site with your students on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Set-up learning centers using this website. Students may want to explore this site during independent time when other work is complete.
