Digital or online reading is different from reading print. Digital reading often includes a research component that is not linear, so when reading online, students need to clarify their purpose and then evaluate and synthesize information. Come learn about the processes involved in digital reading and explore three tools that will help you teach critical strategies to your students. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Understand skills and processes involved in digital reading. 2. Explore tools that help students find, evaluate, and synthesize what they read. 3. Plan for digital reading instruction in the classroom. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

Use Deep Nostalgia Photos to upload and animate images of historical figures to use with multimedia projects. Include animated images in student-created projects created with Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here. Share images as a schema activator when introducing a new unit; for example, find a free Creative Commons image for Harriet Tubman and use it to create an animated image when introducing a unit on the Underground Railroad. You can also choose the highlight color, background color, font size and "word management." Word management allows you the choice of words being forward and backward, diagonal, up and down, and more. Options allow for the puzzle to be played online or printed out.

Use this resource to help students review spelling words or other content related vocabulary. Change the font to a larger size and print it out for young children or students that have vision issues. Have students create word searches for other students to take. Zight (formerly known as CloudApp) is a screen recording tool with features for collaboration and integration with other cloud-based tools. After downloading Zight, follow the directions to install and use it on your device. Use the included tools to trim and cut videos or create GIFs. When finished, save and generate a link to your clipboard. Other features include the ability to do real-time annotations while you are recording your screen and editing tools to trim and cut recordings. Zight integrates with Slack, Microsoft Teams, and others. Free accounts offer one user up to twenty-five items with ninety-second recording times.
In the Classroom
Download and use Zight in many ways in all classrooms. Make screen recordings to share how-to information on navigating websites. Use the annotation tools to highlight important information and the location of website tools. Have students use Zight to share their screens when facing difficulty using sites. Create collections of videos for students to access, including instructions for logging in to various websites, searching effectively, or sharing information digitally. After a shape is shown, there are boxes to input the answer to the area and perimeter of the provided shape. Options are also provided to adjust the size of shapes, to allow only rectangular shapes, and to allow scoring. The learner portion of the site provides an overview of area and perimeter. Be sure to check out the instructor section for links to standards, information for classroom use, standards addressed, and links to similar resources. There is also a printable exploration questions worksheet that can be used in the classroom.

Send simple invitations or surveys with Yarp. Choose the type, name it, add more information, and choose responses such as Yes/No or other clever possibilities. Click "Let me see it" to view the survey. Send the link to your Yarplet to others. No membership is required to create Yarplets or to vote! Click "Save my Yarplets" for instructions to keep track of your polls and invitations when moving from one device to another. This tool will work on any mobile browser.

Use this tool anywhere a quick, simple poll is required (on any device!). Share polls on a projector or interactive whiteboard to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge. This is great as you start a new unit and ask questions about the material. Discuss in groups why students would choose a particular answer to uncover misconceptions. Use for daily quiz questions as a formative assessment. Use a class account to have student groups alternate to create the new poll for the next day. Place a poll on your teacher web page as a homework inspiration or to ask parent questions to increase involvement. Older students may want to include polls on their student blogs to increase reader engagement. Have students create polls for the start of project presentations. Use polls to generate data for math class (graphing), during elections, or for critical thinking activities dealing with the interpretation of statistics. This archived Twitter chat is from August 2018 and will open in Wakelet. The title of this chat is - Digital Storytelling. Through this chat participants will: 1. Define and discuss the basic principles of digital storytelling, 2. Share tech tools that can be used for students to communicate and share knowledge, and 3. Share resources to help with lesson planning which incorporates digital storytelling. Peruse the tools and suggestions from our lead moderator and all participants.

Learn the art and science of growing food through engaging videos. Choose from many video topics such as The History of Food and What's A Food Chain?. Each video correlates to National Standards and includes a Background Essay as well as Classroom Discussion Questions. Download videos directly to your computer for easy viewing at any time. Short run times of less than five minutes makes these videos perfect for classroom use. Create a free account to bookmark and save favorites for easy location. The videos take a little time to load.
In the Classroom
Use Think Garden as an anticipatory set or "activator" to introduce a unit or lesson on a projector or interactive whiteboard. (Note: you might want to load the videos before class. They take a little time to load.) Make a shortcut to videos on this site on classroom computers and use it as a center. Have students create a simple infographic about soil or plants (with some adult assistance) sharing their findings using Snappa, reviewed here. Scribe is a must-have Chrome browser extension for every classroom for creating step-by-step guides for many different uses. After installing the extension and creating an account, activate a Scribe recording to create and share step-by-step tutorials that follow your activity on the computer. Some examples shared include how to strikethrough text in a Google document, how to create a GIF from a YouTube video, and how to merge mail in Gmail. To create a Scribe, click the record button on your browser or Chrome extension and navigate to your starting page. Scribe records each of your actions with a small screenshot and creates a series of steps that guides viewers through the process shared. When finished, click the record button again to stop recording. Your Scribe appears on your account dashboard and offers options to edit the contents. After saving, use the provided link to share with others, embed using the shared code, or download it as a PDF.
In the Classroom
The number of uses in classrooms for Scribe are countless! Use Scribe to create guides for students to log in to software, games, and computer programs. Create step-by-step guides for students on how to add or edit images in tools such as Google Slides, reviewed here or Genially, reviewed here. Ask students to include Scribe within multimedia presentations to demonstrate information such as how to search Google for Creative Commons Images or how to narrow searches to fit into a custom time frame. Create Scribes to share with parents for use at home as a guide for accessing online tools needed for homework or practice. A Close Look at Close Reading has a printable toolkit describing the Purpose of Close Reading - Suggested Strategies, Key Terms, and Visual Tools or Materials. Included are suggestions for organizers and examples for selecting and using questioning in text. One helpful section discusses how to choose appropriate text for close reading and explains that text with simple story lines and vocabulary aren't best suited for this strategy.
In the Classroom
Print and use this packet for use to supplement current reading instruction. Share with other teachers in your grade level or building as a resource for choosing text and effective questioning skills.
