Don't be fooled by the "plain Jane" look of this site or its slightly quirky search interface. Beneath it all lies a treasure trove of math lessons, activities, and games for elementary, middle school, and high school students. The site also includes a number of resources specifically for teachers. There's a real international flavor to the content, so math teachers will need to choose appropriate resources carefully. Still, there's much to use here.

We're not big fans of "drill" web sites, but this "how many can you answer in a two minutes" site would be a good one for elementary students who have the manual dexterity to quickly enter numbers and click their mouse. It handles all four basic operations with selectable number ranges.

In the Classroom

Help your elementary math students review with these timed quizzes; your learners will also get practice using the computer to answer questions more quickly and efficiently.

This fabulous collection of interactives and tools supports math and science concepts across grades 3-12. There are also lessons to accompany the activities and a dictionary of math terms. Sort by "audience" to narrow the listings by level: 3-5, 6-8, or 9-12. Version 3.0, released in 2010, provides better searching by activity type and curriculum term. Click at the bottom of the screen for an "interactivate Guide" to explain the various ways you can search, or simply click on Learner Activities to browse and see the breadth of offerings in areas such as Number and Operations, Geometry, Algebra, Probability, Statistics, Modeling, Discrete, and more.

In the Classroom

Mark this one in your teacher favorites, then return to select activities in support of math or science units. Many curriculum topics have multiple offerings, so let students choose from among three to five activities for homework, in-class practice, or student- demonstrated skills on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Rotate different student groups to run the demonstrations and explanations of the interactives or have them write explanations of them on a class wiki for others to use for review and practice.

This site provides a variety of activities for exploring knots made from pieces of rope. Students can make and verify observations about knots, classify them, combine them, and find ways to determine if two knots are alike. The activities outlined here can be combined to form a single lesson about mathematical knots, or a larger investigative unit that extends over a longer period of time. The sequence in which the activities are listed is roughly in order of increasing difficulty and challenge. The site contains a vocabulary section, an activities section, and an evaluation section.

In the Classroom

Get out your rope and try to tie some of the knots suggested on this website. For each, talk about its steps and components, comparing and contrasting them as you go. Come back to the activity often, and try more difficult ones as you progress in difficulty.
