Come learn about the processes involved in digital reading and explore three tools that will help you teach critical strategies to your students. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Understand skills and processes involved in digital reading. 2. Explore tools that help students find, evaluate, and synthesize what they read. 3. Plan for digital reading instruction in the classroom. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

Sembl is a platform that shares curated tasks to teach and practice math skills in grades K-6. Create an account using your email and select the grades you teach. Find available tasks in many ways, including by grade, type of task, math content, and task creator. Example tasks include slow reveal graphs, 3-act math problems, and puzzles. Select a task to open and view directions for use and launch the activity. Add any activity to your account as a favorite to find and use anytime.
In the Classroom
Add Sembl to your teacher's toolbox of activities to support math instruction. Most tasks include links to extended directions and additional enhancements to extend student learning. Share activities on this site with parents to practice math skills at home with their child. Use Free Online Screen Recorder, reviewed here to create a short tutorial on completing the task and sharing it with parents. Extend student learning by recreating tasks using student examples or data. For example, the 3-act math problem Lil' Sister asks students to compare the heights of sisters, recreate this activity using two students, and share on a simple website created using a simple one-page website maker such as Caard, reviewed here. Many activities share links to Google Slides, reviewed here, after opening the slides, choose to copy the file and change information to create a new activity that includes different data. Choose tasks found on Sembl to use during math station rotations, math family nights, or as homework activities.

Plix (Play, Learn, Interact, and eXplore) shares over 1,000 interactives, providing practice and exploring math and science concepts. Math topics range from adding whole numbers to calculus concepts; science content includes biology, physics, earth, and life science, among others. Follow the directions found in each interactive to move the slider to show changes in each story problem or question. Plix integrates with several learning management systems, including Google Classroom, Schoology, and Canvas. Share Plix activities by creating a new class on the Plix site or assigning it to your learning management system.
In the Classroom
Use Plix interactives as warm-up activities when teaching new concepts, as a computer center activity, or as an exploration activity for homework. If you are not using a learning management system, use the three dots located on the top bar to find different share options and embed code to use on websites. After providing exploration time, ask students to share their understanding of the content in the using Padlet, reviewed here. This is a link to Padlet's Help section for posting video or an image. Pear Practice is a gamified learning experience that promotes collaborative learning and independent practice using tools provided by Pear Deck, reviewed here. Use Pear Practice to create learning experiences or choose from the large selection of activities in the practice sets. When creating a set, Pear Practice allows members to create multiple-choice, fill-in-the-blank, drawing, and drag-and-drop questions. Once a practice set is chosen, create an assignment for individual practice or start a live practice by choosing one of the game mode options. Options within live practice activities allow educators to set time limits for questions, allow guest students not in Pear Deck classrooms, and create random groups. Students join activities using the unique code or by sharing a link. When sharing as an assignment, specify a start and ending date and assign an accuracy goal for students to achieve. Students can retake the assignment as often as needed to meet the accuracy goal. Many activities in Pear Practice's public library correlate to Common Core Standards.
In the Classroom
Include Pear Practice as part of your ongoing practice and formative assessment activities. Browse the site's public library to find many activities for all grade levels and subjects, then edit questions to fit your needs. Use this feature to differentiate practice materials and games to accommodate the different needs of your students. Create sets that meet your specific needs as you become comfortable using Pear Practice. For example, generate practice sets for multilingual learners to learn vocabulary before beginning a new unit or make a set for students needing additional math facts practice. The website offers many Kente designs symbolizing various cultural values, stories, and historical events. It serves as a resource to learn more about the history, symbolism, and artistry behind this well-known textile. Additionally, the site provides insights into the weaving process, highlighting the skill and craftsmanship of the Kente weavers, a downloadable coloring book, and an eBook. The site does embed YouTube videos, so if your district blocks YouTube, you may not be able to access some of the videos.
In the Classroom
Students can create a digital story or a short documentary using a movie program like Adobe Express Video Maker, reviewed here to narrate a story or a theme represented in a specific Kente pattern they choose from the website. Students can study the geometric patterns in Kente designs on the website and then use a tool like GeoGebra to create similar geometric patterns, exploring concepts like symmetry, shapes, and tessellation. They can use the website to explore different Kente cloth designs and then use a drawing app like Tux Paint, reviewed here to create their own digital Kente patterns, focusing on the colors and geometric shapes. After exploring the history section on Kentecloth.net, students can create a multimedia presentation using Google Slides, reviewed here or Microsoft PowerPoint Online, reviewed here detailing the origin, evolution, and cultural importance of Kente cloth.

In Pieces is an interactive exhibition of 30 of the world's most interesting but unfortunately endangered species, portrayed through fragmented geometric art. Each species has a dedicated page with an animation and a brief, informative description highlighting its danger and the need for conservation. This artistic website aims to raise awareness about endangered species and illustrate how people can help with conservation. Each animal has statistics, a video, and a link to ways to help. The videos are housed in YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. Be sure to view the linked resources to ensure they are appropriate for your students.
In the Classroom
This resource would be great in art, math, or science. Download the images and have students use a drawing program to cut out shapes or use pattern blocks to replicate the downloaded image. Use this site in math class to enhance your statistics unit. The information is shown in various ways and provides students with a real-world connection on how statistics can be used to communicate information. Have students research a different endangered animal not shown and create a statistic presentation. In science, use this site to engage students in a unit on conservation. Have students view the site and record facts or statistics they found interesting. They could utilize a KWL to chart and record their thoughts. Summarize.tech saves you and your students time using artificial intelligence (AI) to summarize long YouTube videos. Paste the YouTube URL and submit it to view a video summary. Most summaries include an option to expand the summary to view more information. Use the shared examples to see how Summarize.tech works with a State of the Union Speech, San Francisco School Board Meeting, and other videos. When using AI tools, always check the results for accuracy.
In the Classroom
Use Summarize.tech as a time-saving tool when searching for YouTube videos in your classroom to get a quick overview of the video's content. Before sharing videos with students, provide a summary of the contents to give direction when students are viewing the video. Copy the summary onto a Google Document, then ask students to share information from the original video that provides additional information. A Mobius strip is a one-sided surface with no boundaries that looks like an infinite loop and is also known as a twisted cylinder. A video tutorial on making Mobius strip hearts using paper, tape, and scissors is included. The tutorial also includes instructions on cutting the paper into strips and linking the Mobius strips together.

Include a Mobius strip heart activity during your Valentine's Day celebrations, or share the instructions and materials as part of maker-space activities. Extend learning by providing a finished Mobius strip heart, then ask students to problem-solve how to make the heart without any directions. Teachally uses artificial intelligence (AI) to create personalized, standards-aligned lesson plans that include enrichment activities and ideas for differentiated learning instruction. Free plans allow teachers to add up to fifty students, including twenty-five AI credits monthly and unlimited lesson plans, rewards, and messages. After creating an account, use the links on your dashboard to add a class, plan and teach, communicate, find templates, and more. Next, use the create lesson option to generate a lesson based on your objectives and standards. Options are available to upload resources and import standards. After developing lessons, use the edit options to adjust the lesson and activities as desired. Return to your lessons to find additional AI generation tools that create images, questions based on Bloom's Taxonomy, choice boards, exit tickets, and more. Teachally has many built-in video tutorials that guide members through the options offered. Always check your results for accuracy when using AI-generation tools.
In the Classroom
Teachally is a handy tool to use for many different purposes. Use Teachally to find ideas for choice boards, generate questions, and create exit tickets for any lesson. Quickly create a presentation from a lesson using the enrichment tools for flipped or blended learning lessons, and then share the activity on your class website or LMS. Use Teachally's trivia game creator as a quick, engaging formative assessment activity. What font do you read fastest in? Take the test provided by the Virtual Readability Lab to test the best font for you. Begin by starting the test to view the directions. The test shares several short reading passages along with comprehension questions at the end of each passage and takes approximately five minutes to complete. When finished, users receive a report that includes the number of words read per minute, the correct percentage of questions answered, and the font that best matches the users' reading style. The authors of the Virtual Readability Lab recommend participants complete the test on a computer, not a phone, to achieve the best results.
In the Classroom
According to studies, reading in a font that best matches your reading style can increase reading speed without affecting comprehension and lead to better focus. Knowing your readers' fastest font allows educators to support student learning by adjusting fonts when creating worksheets, sharing websites, or providing articles. Use the information learned to adjust font settings in computer browsers. Go to settings, appearance, and fonts in Chrome or Edge to change all websites' font families, sizes, and weights. Include this site in activities encouraging students to participate in active learning and reflective experiences. After completing the test, ask students to write a summary of their results that includes action steps based on the information received. This activity might make an excellent addition to your students' academic portfolios. Have you ever seen a picture and wanted to know where it was taken or what the object was in the image? Google Lens does this and much more. Use Google Lens to identify objects, translate text, find information, and guide you toward action based on the image's content. Click the image icon (small square) in Google's search bar on your computer or app to drag an image, upload a file, or paste an image link to begin. Search the highlighted area on the image to find places, shop for items, extract text, or translate text. Scan a flyer and add a date to your calendar, find visually similar items, or scan a business card to automatically convert the image into a digital contact and add the information to your phone's address book.
In the Classroom
Include Google Lens in your teacher toolbox for many uses by you and your students. Use this tool to identify plants and leaves near your school during science lessons, quickly translate information for multilingual learners using images, or identify unknown places or items in pictures. Google Lens suggests similar images; use this information to expand and find pictures to include with student projects. Ask older students to search for news articles from different countries and then translate the information to compare with articles from their local news organizations. Use Lens for scavenger hunts or quizzes, where students must identify objects or translate text in real-time, promoting engagement and making learning more interactive.
