At this site, teens take a quiz to find out their background, financial needs, and monthly expenditures. The next page shows users how much money they need to earn to fulfill just their basic needs. The calculator breaks the amount needed to earnings per hour times how many hours per week they'd need to work. It also displays a breakdown of what types of employment would yield the desired amount. Of course, the site also shows that the more educated one is, the better the wages.
In the Classroom
Have students navigate the quiz and scenarios on laptops or in a lab-- or even as homework-- as part of you unit on life after high school or career planning. Help your students to uncomplicated the intricate world of algebra. This engaging and interactive math website is sure to challenge, educate and entertain your students. Thinking Blocks presents students with video tutorials, interactive activities, virtual tutors, and more. Topic choices include addition/subtraction, multiplication/division and ratio word problems. Blocks are used to represent numbers within the math problem. Students are guided step-by-step as they solve the multi-step problems. Each lesson includes only eight questions, so they could easily be completed during one regular class period. There are six lessons in each of the mathematical areas. FLASH is required for some of the activities.
In the Classroom
Try an interactive whiteboard and treat your students to this challenging math activity. If you are able to use a lab or laptops, differentiate your instruction and allow the students to work on skills at their own levels. Each of the three "topic" sets has six lessons.After you use it in class, include this site on your teacher web page for students to practice prior to your test or the "big one."

The website also shares how the Abacus is used today in other parts of the world.

Be sure to check out the "Teachers Resources" section of this website. Some of the interactive portions require that you have JAVA enabled on your computer (they tell you this). Try the Java applet on your interactive whiteboard for students to "manipulate" an abacus, if you do not have any.

This multi-faceted site is simply designed but extremely useful to students and adults of all ages. It does assume that they can read. The purpose of the website is to help individuals solve math problems. The user actually chooses the math topic and enters the specific math problem. The answers provided include a detailed description. There are seven general areas (Math for Everyone, General Math, K-8 Math, Algebra, Plots & Geometry, Trig. & Calculus and Other Stuff). At the "Math for Everyone" page, the topics include calculating a tip, estimating retirement, loans and more! All pages and activities are interactive and individualized for the user.
In the Classroom
Teachers can use this tool to help students of all ages understand difficult mathematical concepts. High school teachers could help students understand "real world math," such as how much a car payment will cost. Teachers could also make these interactive activities a class challenge on an interactive whiteboard or projector.Include the link on your tecaher web page for parents and support teachers to use together with struggling students who need more practice. Engineering Resources is a K-12 website that contains a multitude of information including lessons correlating to national and state standards. Search for activities and ideas by grade level and curriculum topic using the Search and Advanced Search buttons. Narrow choices provided in the curriculum section by filtering options to include lessons, activities, complete units, and more. Maker Challenges offer a variety of experiences for hands-on learning with topics including titles like A Doghouse Design Project and Create and Control a Popsicle Stick Finger Robot. Other site options allow you to search by educational standards and provide information and resources for teaching engineering to students in grades K-12.
In the Classroom
Bookmark this site as a resource for finding STEM lessons and activities for all grade levels. Collaborate with your peers using a bookmarking tool like Papaly, reviewed here, to share all of your resources. Papaly offers you the ability to add notes to shared resources making it easy to discuss and add comments to items shared. Instead of having students write journal entries during science or maker lab activities, enhance student learning by using a video response tool like Flip, reviewed here, to have students respond to essential questions and comment on their peers' observations. As a culminating activity to a unit, ask students to create an explainer video answering essential questions to the unit topic. A nifty collection of math and health games, and at the bottom of the site find a link for activities, printables, parents, videos, games, and teachers. The teacher link will take you to PBS Learning Media which has lesson plans and follow-up activities to reinforce the concepts featured in a particular game. Math strategies are cleverly disguised as sports challenges, invention making, puzzles, mazes etc. Math topics include patterns, deductive reasoning, budgeting, decimals, negative numbers, place value, elapsed time, measurement, operations, probability, geometry, and more. Start from this teacher page to select the game most appropriate for your students.
In the Classroom
Choose a game a month to include on your teacher web page or make available from a shortcut on your classroom computer, correlated to the current topics in your math class. Create photo trading cards using images you upload or store on Flickr, Instagram, or Dropbox. Imagine having your students create study aides about famous people using images they draw and scan or photos of themselves impersonating the famous people, such as presidents, explorers, authors, and more. If you celebrate reading by having an "author's tea," why not follow up by asking students to make trading cards for the authors they "met"? Use a similar approach for famous historical figures or even for geometric shapes you photograph with the digital camera. If students write their own "biographies" of the shapes to study from, they will learn for sure! They can even trade each other for favorites.
In the Classroom
Upload and tag your photo, type information, and print cards. Download finished card to your computer. Use for book reports for literature circles with each student in the group making a card for a different character in the book. This is also an excellent idea for special occasions for special people: mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, school nurse, school secretary, school custodian, favorite aunt, or anyone else! Be sure to print onto cover stock and laminate (if possible). What fabulous (and memorable) gifts. Check out the Big Huge Labs educator account. Creating one's own flashcard sets, saving them, and accessing sets already available are only a few of the many options of this comprehensive site. Although there is a fee for full membership, many options are free on the site. To print out flash cards, participants must join, but studying online is a free option.
In the Classroom
Allow groups of students to create card sets for the class to study for tests (using your free account). With just one classroom computer, you can allow students to take turns practicing with the card set. Have a contest or rotate the chance to make the study cards for each quiz or test. This will build study skills for all. If you haev access to an interactive whiteboard, have students do a review session using your student-made or another premade card set on the board.
