Flickr allows you to upload and share images in an online location. It is not specifically an education site, so it has the drawback of possibly including "inappropriate" content. As a teaching tool, you can upload picture collections and "tag" them with a unique keyword so students can access them for various activities, such as creating sequenced "comic strips," making annotated posters, including photos in blogs, and other electronic projects. This is a great way to make the photos accessible for the students to use. Note: use the DIRECT URL to the specifically-tagged photos ("photosynthesisproject") or create a collection for each project.
In the Classroom
Join the site for free (and make sure you turn OFF all the "send me emails" features). Place photos online for all the projects you expect to do with students. They will remain in place for future years. If you wish to, remove them from "public" viewing when you do not need them. Note: You MUST be the actual copyright holder to upload photos to this site, so use your digital camera, NOT downloaded photos from the web! Skills needed: taking and saving digital pictures, location and upload of photo files, "tagging" them so students can a find them, copying the URL of the tagged group or of the collection, and changing the attributes of your uploaded pictures. Find other tools such as Big Huge Labs Captioner or Motivator to use with the photos.You must be registered and logged in to add items to your favorites.

Encourage parents to become involved with their children's education using these helpful, downloadable booklets on helping your child with science, history, math, reading, homework, early adolescence, preschool, general success in school, and being a responsible citizen. Some are geared for elementary only and others extend through middle school. Most are also available in Spanish version. Download as a pdf (Acrobat file) or Word document. You can order copies, but it may be easier and faster to simply print your own. Remember that you need Acrobat Reader to open pdf files. Get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.
In the Classroom
Hand these booklets out at back to school night, open house, or conferences. Encourage parents to become involved supportively.

This very simple site, created by an anonymous puzzle-lover, is a treasury for logic problems and lateral thinking puzzles to use in your classroom or beyond. Click on the puzzle type you want. Use them as brain warm-ups in a math or science class before venturing into problem-solving or inquiry process or simply to engage the brains before starting any activity. There are different levels of logic and different types of lateral thinking puzzles, each with a hint before revealing the complete answer. These puzzles would also be useful for gifted enrichment.
In the Classroom
If you don't have time to spend on these in class as often as you would like, print out a single lateral thinking or logic problem each week for your bulletin board and let the students argue about it all week. Or include this link on your teacher website for the students to access outside of class. Have a ball on this highly interactive, attractive, and entertaining site that teaches all sorts of math skills for grades K-6. Check out Weighing Wangdoodles to practice balancing equations, learn about perimeter, practice word problems, solve logic puzzles, and even watch video problem-solving challenges. View the video "Math Apprentice" to learn more about how math is used in the "real world." This is certain to be a favorite both in school and at home. Teachers can even build their own worksheets to specifications by topic and level. Try the math Olympics, get caught up in fractions playground or money mania (near the bottom of the page). Every activity allows you to differentiate by skill level. This one is a teacher's dream.

Designed to capitalize on young students' interest in animals and pets, this is more a collection of "idea starters" than actual lessons. ASPCA offers basic ideas and templates; you'll want to add your own context in a Language Arts or Math lesson. The subject matter, though, is likely to keep students' attention.
In the Classroom
Use the classroom ideas in this class during a unit or lesson on persuasive speeches and writing. Animals are usually a soft spot for students, and animal care and cruelty may be an easy area to get students passionate enough to care about writing a good persuasive piece. Show students the information in any one of the packets, and have them write a persuasive speech or essay in partners about their topic. If having students write speech, take it to the next level and have students make podcasts of their speech. We recommend using a site such as PodOmatic (reviewed here).
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Requires graphing calculator(s). The site is plain-vanilla, but the content is good. Most activities include both student sheets and also Teacher Notes and Explanations. Includes most high school math subjects and many middle school, as well. Even includes problem-solving strategies. The activities are separated by calculator model, so you can be certain you have an activity that works on your calculators. This collection was created by a high school/college teacher in Ohio, not Texas Instruments.

With a focus on math skills needed by air traffic controllers, the site presents six interactive problems. A Maths Dictionary for Kids is a fantastic interactive online math dictionary for students which explains over 600 common mathematical terms and math words in simple language. Enter the site using the link on the home page and choose (or browse) math terms. Math terms come to life with a click of the mouse! Virtually all terms have an animated or interactive component - for example, choose quadrilateral to view a definition along with an image of a quadrilateral, the next button changes the quadrilateral to a square along with the new definition, choose next again to see the square change to a rhombus, and so on. Virtually all standard math terms are included so users are likely to find anything they want along with some new terms! A link is included at the bottom of each section to print each definition easily.
Another wonderful portion of the site is a new section titled Math Charts. Search this portion by choosing from areas such as numbers, operations, decimals, or much more then choose one of the sub-topics. Each chart includes a visual description of the topic and is specifically created to be printed for classroom use, choose the print button at the bottom of the page and the content will enlarge to fill the most it can in whatever size paper is chosen. Be sure not to miss the blackline masters located at the bottom of this section that contain many printables for classroom use such as fraction strips, hundreds charts, and much more.

Create a scavenger hunt for students to perform to find words in the math dictionary, have students write definitions and illustrations in math notebooks. View the site using your interactive whiteboard when discussing, introducing, or reviewing math concepts. Share this site through your classroom website or newsletter for reference at home.
